streaming DStv and Netflix on a non smart TV

A Chromecast works for this as well, as long as you don't mind casting and controlling from another device like a cellphone. Works with DSTV Now, Youtube, Showmax, etc..

I'm not a tech/geekie person and I got a Pi up and running in an hour. You DL the software, stick it on a memcard, stick it in the Pi, plug in KB&M and you're ready to roll. WiFi ready as well.

The Pi won't do DSTV or 1080P Netflix.

Netflix probably but the browser on Raspian doesn't do the DSTV DRM unless you use the DSTV add on on Kodi but then DSTV breaks that again and then you're stuck.

If you buy a media player like the LIT or Mi Box you get 4K, nice GUI remote etc.

Chromium said no the last I heard.

The Pi is awesome and for local playback sure but streaming no so much, too much of a hassle.

I assume you mean legal torrents like Linux ISOs, I don't think so no because they won't have write permission for external storage.

@adamr I just checked the rumours and the new device should be available next week if you want to wait and see. Last week Wednesday the person said in two weeks so that's next week.

The voice on those boxes is OK. Keep in mind if your kid throws the remote at the TV, the TV will develop a dark spot and the remote will run through a pair of batteries every week.

I think I could only get it working on desktop (Firefox).

Just go to the garage and put together a basic dual core with parts. Even buying youd be okay spending 300. After that everything will be familiar. I have my old model 65 inch running everything and the torrent or two. Box fits behind the screen and PC Remote app allows me to control it with all oyr android phones.
