need a device like a Roku or firestick that can stream DStv and Netflix ... looking for best value product (cheap but that works) ... what can people recommend ? WiFi a plus else not a biggie as I can hook up ethernet to it

I think there was a similar thread but I can't find it

Best bet would be the Xiaomi Mi Box as its one of the few android certified (read this as proper android tv and not normal android) devices available locally that's not too expensive:

I'm actually also looking.

Cheap appears to be nasty with issues regarding dstv and netfix, so stay away from the hundreds that flood gumtree.
Looks like Mi Box, Telkom LIT or one of the MyGica's are the way to go.

I'm raising my rotten tomato shield, but my recommendation is an Apple TV. R2800 is pricey but you see the 4th Gen for ~R1500 second hand and it's amazeballs. Only catch is it isn't 4k.

Avoid the 3rd gen - can't install apps.

I used to use the cheap android boxes for streaming then one of my friends showed me his Telkom lit box. Runs Android TV OS, is google certified and after getting myself one I will never go back to the cheap and nasty android boxes.

If you want to watch DSTV you need a google certificated device. So what some gents said above the xiaomi mibox is really not a bad fit and it's not that expensive either.

The S version (mibox 4) is the latest one AFAIK

Got one of these for a friend Mediabox MBX4K 'Ranger' it was more expensive than cheaper alternatives at R1700 but it worked perfectly and there is local support for it.

how much is it
Think around R1k, but bought mine off the tree for R500. My mate as well, but definitely worth it either route.
If anything more than that is required, look at the other premium devices as mentioned.
Don't do the Chinese devices, their os and harware suck big fake ling ling balls.

what about the Roku kewse does it do DStv ?
Well not according to a review on takealot:

this it ?

lol phoned and it's sold but will keep looking. So on DStv ... have the traditional decoder with of course a DStv sub. To get up and running with DStv now what is needed ?
Reg account online. Use those details as login details in the app.
I'm using my mom's premium subscription, don't know how much is available on the standard?

Also the Skyworth works great with Dstv Now, just not sure on the netflix on this though.

Sums up my Amazon experience pretty well. Scroll past all the product info onto the reviews to get the actual product info.

Adam, let us know what you end up getting and a short review/initial impressions please. You like shiny things, and I appreciate the thoughts of those that like shiny things.

What about a Pi?
I think that could work as well, but as @adamr said, much mission.
And at that small saving (if at all) over the Lit box - don't think it's the effort worth.
If a techie/geekie person is amped enough then maybe yes, the effort worth as you can do so much more on it.

I'm not a tech/geekie person and I got a Pi up and running in an hour. You DL the software, stick it on a memcard, stick it in the Pi, plug in KB&M and you're ready to roll. WiFi ready as well.

hmmmm will look into it as well

edit but a keyboard and mouse will be too much hassle ... need just a remote. so for now first choice is gonna be to find a lit box else the xioami stuff
