Assuming you don't know "someone" or have money for a bribe, is it possible to get access to a national list of stolen vehicles?

It would be nice for the average joe to scan a license plate and check if the vehicle is stolen or for neighbourhood watch groups to quickly check a car driving at 20km/h at 3AM.

Obviously the data would/should not contain any personally identifiable info and in theory the plates could just be a hashed string with make, model and description.

Has anyone worked with eNatis / SAPS on something like this?

Unfortunately the only way is to phone the traffic department and check previous history on the vehicle.

Work at a car dealership so we have had the odd bump with things like this.

Or.....You could just not listen to people who don't really know what they are talking about and download FirstCheck, available for Android, not sure about IOS. It connects directly to E-Natis and is updated daily! Also used by multiple security companies and CPF's country wide who feed their own info into the app which keeps it even more up to date. and it's free :)

We use it daily for our CPF and it has nabbed many a would be robber in the process!!

Pleasure ;)

In the 4+ years i did recoveries there is no proper database as our country has 23 recovery Companies and the leading 4 normally communicate with each other on a daily basis if and when vehicles get whacked , sent to chop shops / across border hence a car stolen/hijacked today can still be sold registered to 10 different people sadly the manpower needed + costs are mind blowing to mention.

@BLaaR can enlighten more on this discussion ;).

FirstCheck isn't the be all and end all of what is needed, but it at least gives you the info of whether it has been flagged as stolen, used in a crime or at least if the numberplate matches the actual cars. The problem that we have found is that the database does not get updated as much as it should, and this is reliant on SAPS, CPF Communities and Security/Recovery Companies.

We also use a BOT on Telegram called NP-BOT, which is very similar to FirstCheck, but seems to be way better updated. When you type in the Reg, it immediately comes back with the details on the car, and then about 10 secs later will come back with extra Crime related info on the vehicle.
Again, we have used this very successfully within our community. Even the areas that have number plate recognition cameras for their areas have managed to write API's to integrate both of these services, and have had quite a bit of success. When implemented properly, the systems can send a message via various platforms that a flagged vehicle has entered the area.

This is crowdsourced info.
