Star Citizen - spiritual successor to freelancer and wing commander

So Star Citizen will be doing a free fly from next friday (23rd) for a week where you will be able to play and test all the ships in the game even for peeps that havent bought it so if you on the fence its a good time to go try it, just remember it is still in alpha testing so there will be some bugs and lag and stuff.

Nah, the fence is actually pretty comfy, And there are too many insects down there.

Anyone tried out the expo so far? I am stuck in a control room somewhere until Tuesday with just my work laptop...so rip...

Yip been playing none stop since friday haha, super cool, everyday there has been different ships at the expo to rent for free and once you rent them they will stay in your ships list until the event is over next week so currently i have rented all the ships that have come into the expo.

The new little fighter, Anvil Arrow, is insane, has 2, machine guns and 2 lasers that are all gimbled so packs in a massive punch and its super fast, going to upgrade one of my smaller ships to it this week.

Was messing around with a mate on the constellations last night, those things are beasts, turrets were dropping a cutlass in 5-6 shots.

Tonight we going to mess around with the 600i because its out for rental today

Haha that ship is pretty cool, i was also thinking of grabbing one, the whole build your own ship is a nice idea

I love the way it looks.
I'm also very tempted to grab one of the bigger ships but eh not sure, I've only got 3 friends that play...Don't see us being able to fully utilize one of those lol

Yea man some of the bigger ships are cool but they need a team, there was talks of a carb org going up by mr @ian_stagib but i dont think he has got around to it yet.

I have 4 mates that play but we also play a lot of pubg tourneys so not everyone can play all the time, there is a streamer named Twerk17, he is one of the biggest star cit streamers and he has an org call twerkcorp, im an org leader of that so there is normally people to play with from the org and a lot of them have really big ships.

Whats your name in the game?

I wouldn't mind having a carb org but I don't know if i have the time to be a super active leader. Perhaps people can give their opinions? Would a carb org be wanted by everyone? What would be our focus? And i also feel the game isn't yet at a point where I want to jump in and play regularly yet. Too many things to still change, and I don't want to spoil the surprise too much when the game really ships.

Any idea what the current download size is? Been so long since updated the game it needed a new launcher which wiped the old folder. Let the launcher download 10gb or so of base game files, now its ticked over to 30gb of content files.

Your first time downloading since 3.2 will mean a full game download (around 30gb). After that, and since 3.2, you'll download just the delta updates (just the files you need).

Yea it does a 12gb dl then a 30 odd gb and thats all, so when that 30 is done you are sorted

Was messing around with the new Alien ship last night, dont like how it flies but it is good looking

I think they actually sent me one of those because my new ship is not complete yet.
I picked up one of these yesterday

The Defender - Roberts Space Industries | Follow the development of Star Citizen and Squadron 42

Ah yea that defender is sick, 4 S3 guns is insane. Yip you would have got one of those until the defender is ready. I wanted a blade until i saw they were $275, can buy a lot nicer ships for that haha.

I couldnt find you under PancakesZA yesterday, but i see that you have now linked your account so ill try again today.

Lost all my money trading, stupid ship bugged out in levski with a full cargo and i lost all of it so going to mine today to make some cash haha

Yeah, soz about that. I only noticed this morning that I was using a different name in SC.

I'm not really planning on playing a whole lot, just wanted to get in on some of the new ships.
It's been a while since I last actually played.

Guys, i need some help on deciding if my fleet is good enough or if i should change up anything before the anniversary sale finishes. My 3 ships are:

- Anvil Hurrican
- Banu Merchantman
- Origin 600i explorer

My idea for having these three were that i wanted to be able to fight, trade and explore. I might look at other careers later but i think these 3 cover most things. I'm most interested in the exploring and trading part but a space game wouldn't be a space game without some fighting.

So I feel the Merchantman is perfect for me for trading. The Hurricane i'm wondering if it should be changed to a vanguard or not (and then i don't know which one). The 600i i was thinking would be nice if i could convert to a carrack but unfortunately I can't downgrade on the site.

What do you think?

Alright, so. To those of you still following this thread, the final roadmap update for 2018 was just released. It has also brought with an SQ42 roadmap for the first which hints at a release date. Beta is supposed to be a thing during the first 6 months of 2020 and then release is supposed to be a thing sometime in the latter 6 months of 2020. I think the PU of Star Citizen will follow a similar timeline but will have to see.

These can be found here: Star Citizen Roadmap - RSI and here: Star Citizen Roadmap - RSI

Then something else came that I did not expect, the company financials. I have not had time to look at them yet (literally released like 15 minutes ago), nor do I think I will fully understand (am by no means a math boffin) but still. Very interesting I think. Would be interested to hear any and all thoughts from someone who does understand it.

That can be found here: Cloud Imperium Financials from 2012 to 2017

With these financials comes news of another interesting tidbit (that I am not sure how to deal with yet), but CIG has taken on some private investment which includes new board members. This investment is very specifically releated to the marketing on SQ42 when needed and will not be used for developmental purposes. It also seems like only 10% of the company shares have been sold and Chris Roberts is still by far and away at the helm of the ship. So will be very interesting to see how this works out.

Can find sources for that here: Cloud Imperium Investment Fact Sheet and here: Cloud Imperium Games Appoints Two New Board Members

Finally, Chris Roberts has released the final so-called, "Letter from the Chairman" outlining all that has happened this year (quite a busy year to be honest) and some projections for the future.

That letter is here: Letter from the Chairman - Roberts Space Industries | Follow the development of Star Citizen and Squadron 42

Enjoy the light reading ;D

P.S. - Looks like 3.4 will be released to PU tonight!

Hmm... 2020... well, until then FD has just released a great update for Elite: Dangerous, maybe I should warm up my Asp Explorer

New patch 3.5.1 dropped on friday, i jammed quite a bit on the weekend, its felling so good, getting over 100 fps constantly, load into the server times are less than 15 seconds. Most of the missions are working so there is now a bunch of stuff to do

Star Citizen Alpha 3.6 Update Notes:
Systemic Improvements

  • Ship Purchasing Kiosks: Nearly all of Star Citizen’s 90+ flyable ships and drivable vehicles are now purchasable in-game, with in-game currency.
  • FoIP + VoIP Improvements: You can now use Face over IP or simple VoIP calls to “hail” other ships, giving players another way to connect with each other, team up, and communicate across the massive Star Citizen universe. Additionally, FoIP and TrackIR now power “free look” via headtracking technology, allowing players to control their in-game FPS controls by moving in real life.
  • New Space Stations: To cope with the constantly expanding playable space, new space stations are now sprinkled throughout the Stanton system. These massive space stations feature docking pads, shops, and other points of interest to explore.
Ships & flight improvements

  • Hover Mode: Hover mode automatically activates near planetary surfaces at low speed. When engaged, ships swap to VTOL thruster mode to level them out and ensure a safe landing.
  • Vehicle Item Degradation & Misfires: Items such as powerplant’s and thruster’s performance now degrade through heavy use, overheating and damage accumulation, leading to misfires. In addition, all vehicle weapons now support visual degradation.
  • Ship Shield System: Shields have been reworked to add major differences between manufacturers and classifications to provide a difference in feel and value between equipment.
Updated Ships and New Weapons

  • Anvil Ballista: this surface-to-air missile equipped ground vehicle features long range scanning and radar, plus the firepower to control the skies from the ground.
  • Aegis Vanguard Warden: a hard-charging bulldog of a fighter craft that features extensive forward-mounted weaponry designed to tear through enemy shields and armor.
  • Kruger Intergalactic P52 Merlin: ideal for racing, local recon, and fast combat, this snub fighter ship is designed to be transported aboard a larger ship. With a centerline-mounted Gatling cannon and Lightning Power engine, it’s fast, maneuverable, and packs a punch.
  • Kruger Intergalactic P72 Archimedes: This sister craft to the Merlin is a snub fighter featuring an extra intake and lighter hull to deliver exceptional handling and boost capabilities in a sleek package.
  • Behring s38 pistol: this standard sidearm is in widespread use across the Empire for both citizens and law enforcement officers, with functionality that minimizes recoil while enabling quick semi-automatic fire.
  • MaxOx Neutron Repeaters ship weapon: this weapon is designed for devastating close-range ship combat, featuring a twin barrel system firing neutron projectiles at a rapid rate.
  • Klaus & Werner Lumin V submachine gun: even when constantly on the attack, the gun's excellent design provides low recoil and a tight spread, while firing single energy bolts or bursts of five shots at a time.

After taking a long break from Star Citizen I jumped into 3.7.1 this weekend and, for the first time since 1.x, I have been having an absolute blast.
Framerates at 1440p rarely dip below 40. I had a couple of crashes that were resolved by deleting the shader cache, I can now play for hours on end without issue.

The contracts system has been fleshed out a bit; there is enough variety to keep me entertained. Even cargo hauling or courier missions manage to be fun when I bounced off them hard in Elite.
The visuals are gorgeous as always, especially the atmospherics and vegetation on Hurston. Area 18 is pure Blade Runner and I love seeing how they are incorporating various sci-fi influences into the atmosphere. Hurston's big building is equally impressive, if not more so.
There are plenty of different ships to rent and buy, most of which are now useful. I have mainly been running a Freelancer for the cargo space but I've rented the Prospector and had a spin the Cutlass Black and enjoyed both.
There are enough players per server to make places feel alive. It's not uncommon to run into other players out in the wild, for better or for worse.

The AI is dumber than a bag of hammers (especially the FPS AI), but I believe the next patch will be bringing several improvements to that.

I had a session this evening which ended really badly. I was doing a search and retrieval in my trusty Freelancer on a Connie wreck on Yela when I stumbled onto a drug lab. Thinking this was paydirt, I put all 300,000 aUEC that I had managed to earn since the last wipe into WiDoW and headed off to Grim Hex. After landing successfully, I sprint joyfully down to the trading consoles only to find that they are full and can only take 1300 aUEC worth off my hands.
Not a problem, I think, I'll just head off to CRU-L4 where they have a fence. Well I get there safely and find they can only offer me 22 aUEC when each unit cost 110 aUEC. Not a fuck says I and I head off back to GrimHex to sell it off piecemeal as the server ticks consume supply.
En route, I am interdicted by a bunch of pirates and I go to roughly 60% cruise to get away while my QTcools down and then charges. Shortly thereafter, while approaching Crusader, I am stopped by security who want to scan my cargo. I push it to 100% cruise to get away from them and complete my remaining jumps in quick succession.
Now, anyone who has flown around Grim Hex will know that full cruise, especially in a Freelancer that flies like a brick in gravy, is not a great idea as there are many asteroids waiting to make your close personal acquaintance.
Well, naturally as I came out of QT I tried to decelerate and manoeuvre away but I could not stop in time. 300,000 worth of cargo goes splat against a rock and I am left with just 2000 to start again.

Despite that, I can't wait to pick it up again after work tomorrow. If anyone feels like checking it out, there is a free fly running until the third where anyone can create an account and try a selection of five ships. Existing players can also redeem the code to check out some of the new arrivals.
If you do create an account to have a go, I would appreciate it if you used my referral code as it gets me a little closer to my next referral reward: STAR-F7W6-4ZJY
