So, its time to let the old trusty i7 920 go. I've been waiting for the Ryzen 3000 release, but for pure gaming the i7 9700k seems to be the answer.

I've narrowed it all down to the following:
I7 9700k Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6GHz Octa Core 14nm Coffee Lake Socket LGA1151 Desktop CPU - Cooler Not Included - Wootware

Maximus Hero XI Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero (WI-FI) Intel Z390 Coffee Lake LGA1151 ATX Desktop Motherboard - Wootware

G Skill F4 2x16gb 3200 G.Skill F4-3200C16D-32GTZR TridentZ RGB Series 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz DDR4 CL16 1.35V Desktop Memory - Wootware

Corsair H115i Pro Corsair CW-9060032-WW H115i Pro RGB Hydro Series 280mm Liquid CPU Cooler - Wootware

I also need a Nvme drive, no idea where to start. 500gb to 1tb. Please confirm if mobo can boot with drive as well.

Any alternatives you can recommend? (and why)

Edit: i have no need for multi gpu setup, more than one nvme drive. I just want to get the max out of the cpu.

Why do you need such a big OS drive? Rather get a 250GB OS and a bigger one for your games. That's what I would do. Otherwise you golden!

Thats the way I currently have it and have done for the last 10 years, but these days reinstalls are few and far between, so I felt one drive would suffice. I currently have an old 128gb ssd for OS and a 250gb for games. Could probably use the 250 for OS and just get a 500gb for games. Not sure how the ols Samsung evo750 would compare to a nvme in loading times.

I recently switched over from SSD to NVMe drives (for less cable clutter) and in all honesty for loading times is not something I notice. Windows maybe boots faster? Can't confirm as I haven't tested actual boot times. Something like Forza 7 did load a bit quicker, but it wasn't life changing. People will probably crucify me for saying it, but for the average user they won't notice a speed difference in loading.

Totally agree
For most people's needs NVMe is nothing special . Still the price is almost the same now so only reason to go for it . Even 6 months ago it was rather wasteful unless doing very large file transfers. Average user will not notice much between a SATA and NVMe SSD. It's all in the price now and as they are close enough, NVMe is worth it purely for that reason alone.

I agree 100%. During a blind test very few users would notice the difference in their workflow, especially in gaming... But the price is so close, why not... And a bonus as bythecantloads said, no cables!

Solid components, but for what exactly are we building?

A pc that can best run the 'average PC game'? or any specific genres or games you like to play? Any additional work you do on your computer other than gaming? What GPU are you planning on inserting into this bad boy? What power are you planning on delivering? What screen/resolution are you planning on using?

Lots of unknowns. Every component contributes to the overall performance and balance of your system.

You simply listed a few components that are all compatible. So, short response to your post is yes. Long response is sure.

Also be mindful that in most cases the ram timing is more important than the speed of the memory chips:

Something like this would have a faster transfer rate than the option you listed:

The lower your CAS latency the better the module will overall perform.

Sorry, I guess it was a "how long is a piece of string" question.

Gaming would be at 1440p and 144hz, could oc to 165, but havent spent anytime on this.

I recently bought a Phanteks P600s, MSI 1080ti gaming X and a Corsair HX1000.

Almost exclusively fps games.

Can I get similar performance out of a cheaper mobo?
