Hey guys, I recently picked up a 3-pin card (Gaming Z Trio) and I assume due to its stock BIOS limit of 370W, MSI did some tweaking to the power delivery (probably not a whole lot). The card also has some weird mining issue where it won't allow the card out of P2 and thus you mine at sub 200W. Now onto the actual question.

I just wanted to ask how many of you have had success flashing a different AIB vBIOS on your 3080/90 (especially anyone with a Z Trio), and do you guys reckon the 30W advantage the 3080 Strix BIOS has over the Suprim X BIOS (420W) would actually make any tangible different in benchmarks as I'm not sure if the 3080 scales that far,

I flashed the Suprim X bios onto my Gaming X Trio and then flashed it back.

That extra noise for a couple FPS was not worth it IMO. The Gaming X Trio cooler (which looks to be almost identical to the Gaming Z Trio except that the Z has a better backplate) is just not good enough for 400+ watts.

Also note that the Strix BIOS will reduce the maximum fan RPM too, and you lose the card's RGB control too.
With the Suprim X BIOS neither of these things happened though.

Also don't forget about updating your BIOS to get that ResizeBAR capability, in some games that is worth more than the extra power limit.

Thankfully the card shipped with a Resize BAR BIOS (I assume it’s because of the later revision). I definitely won’t use the Suprim BIOS 24/7 haha. Just want the 430W limit for 3DMark and I want to be able to mine at 100MH/s.

For gaming I’ll definitely be sticking to a 100% (370W) power target which is the same as the Z is doing anyway right now. Thanks for the response though. I might actually give it a shot.

You sure that the issue with mining isn't just the card not being set up correctly with the correct clock settings and power limits?
Or did you check on HWiNFO that the GDDR6X isn't throttling ?

For mining, 100MH/s probably uses a lot of power.
I do around 89MH/s at 207w with Nicehash (430kH/J) using the Nicehash Lite optimization profile.

I'm doing essentially the same as you. Its definitely not a bad hash rate for efficiency, but for some reason MSI locked CUDA power draw on some of the Gaming X and Z BIOSs. I think the latest BIOS for your card fixed it, but the Z unfortunately has the issue. I'm currently doing around 89 @ 199W for 445kH/J when my monitor is turned off. Not sure if it's worth the effort but I really want to see where this card tops out.

@VPII can help. If i remember correctly he flashed a few of his 3080's.

The actual process seems to be super simple, but there are a few cases online where dudes have ended up corrupting BIOS chips without really doing anything out of the ordinary.

Just kinda makes me ask myself if I’m gonna end up being one of the unlucky ones. I also made sure to check how to recover the GPU, but in one case an individual couldn’t recover his card no matter what he tried. Just kinda scary because I can’t afford to brick this card.

I hear you, is always a scary thought bricking something. I'm sure he'll be able to give some good advice though. Hopefully he wakes up soon and sees the tag[emoji23]
If however you are doubting yourself then i wouldn't attempt it myself personally. If rather try other alternatives to get better performance out of it. I have no experience with mining at all though so please forgive me if I'm not contributing any worthwhile info to help your cause.

Haha no it’s all good. The current 200W profile I have is perfect for casual mining because my G6X hasn’t tipped over 84c which is really ideal.

Other than that I just enjoy benchmarking and comparing cards I’ve owned and I wanted to see if I could beat my 6800 XT and 6900 XT with the 430W BIOS.

You got a gem. Mines at 94-98c with 100% fan
Ahh shieet. I think the Z had some minor alterations to the thermal pads and the backplate, but I’m not sure. 94c isn’t that bad but 98c I’d probably steer clear of.

My Gaming Z had thermal pads on the rear but they were so thin that they did not make contact with the back of the board. Replacing the pads made a huge difference in temps.

They're fine. Official Micron spec is 0C to +95C/+105C. The RTX3090 is even worse, since those modules are regularly 100C+ because the mem on the back is only cooled by the backplate.

But this probably isn't going to be a long term thing for me, will probably stop if ETH EIP-1559 comes along in July and slashes Nicehash profits. If profits are still good, I'll probably take out the case dust filters as they're very restrictive for case intake and exhaust and up the case fans from 80% to 100%.

When I keep my side panel on, my mem goes to 88c, so I’ve decided to just leave it off. EIP definitely will slash profits, but I think miners are moving to Raven coin or something.
