Software Must Haves

Someone posted something about XYexplorer but it's gone now.. sounds awesome, especially with tabs as I often need a few file explorers open, but it's not freeware/open source. Any alternatives?

Also - if no one knows about it yet
Brave browser instead of Chrome. Built in adblocker and rewards for your favorite websites like carb. There's a link around here somewhere explaining it.

By the way. Threads like these are dangerous. Just now your clean install has 30 additional pieces of software installed which are crazy useful but not actually required by you yet and therefore the clutter has already begun.

i agree but thats why the request was to state the software and state WHY its useful as it then helps others understand why they would use it, or if its relevant for them stuff like this "Lav Megamix is the same :p (Pot/MPC+Lav+Mad) " is irrelevant for most that have no idea what Pot+lav+mad is

Potplayer: Awesome media player that is fast and customizable and comes with many built in features (Bad ass subtitle engine)
LAV Filters: Open-Source DirectShow Media Splitter and Decoders (For playing variety of file formats)
madVR: is a high quality DirectShow video renderer (Too many features to list but allows highest quality video rendering that i am aware of)
Bluesky FRC: Enabling AMD's Fluid Motion frame interpolation for third party players.

Here is a link to get you started but i have to say his settings are sometimes overkill :p

Total Commander
The only File Manager I use, was called Windows Commander. Bought it in the late 90's, still being updated.
Its not free, only gives you a nag screen when you start it. Android version is freeware though.
Has 16/32/64 bit Windows Versions.

For a free alternative though, there is Double Commander that also works well.
Besides Windows, there is also Linux/Mac editions.

I honestly use nothing but Chromium (with Ad Nauseum installed) and Steam (for games).
And my engineering programs. (Mainly open source compilers, KiCad, Atom, etc.)

I have never had a virus in the last 10 years + (I just don't click dodgy links or download random software.)

Oh and if you frequently copy files around let's not forget good old Teracopy. Absolutely ESSENTIAL in the XP days. Now less so but despite massive improvements by MS it's still so much better to use when copying/moving a large bunch of files.

Last time I did some testing was probably on windows 8 still and teracopy was actually worse than windows.

Well I didn't mean faster (though it certainly was in XP days). I just meant more control. Like automatically rewriting older files only, resuming after crash or close, and doing file comparison.

Also Teracopy was stuck on a old version and then in a super unstable Beta for a long time. So maybe you tested during that time?

And it's certainly not lightyears slower. I used it just yesterday to transfer 2.7TB of data which it completed in reasonable amount of time given the speed of the drives/connection and the amount of files.

So I still use it all the time and still consider it essential and still think MS can do more work on their copy handling.

aTube catcher, VLC, MSI afterburner, coretemp, adobe reader DC, Avast Free, Daemon tools lite (if using W7), SDI, Nirsoft complete pack, TeraCopy, WinRAR, ShareX and Rufus.

Agreed i just fresh installed windows, and my plan is to try keep it "junk" free like when u install something then uninstall it, files remain - i would like to find programs that could solve this issue trying to keep my pc less cluttered and remove redundant stuff

Revo uninstaller - magic software and removes all the left overs not needed

I would like to add:
fffmpeg - with batch files
Converts videos between formats better then any software I’ve found
Teamviewer - Remote Desktop
Internet download manager (IDM) - worth spending the money, downloads are stable and has resume functionality esp with big files
Bullzip pdf - but ms now has its own printer
