Hi all,

Okay so I purchased a Netgear JGS524 (24 port gigabit) switch secondhand a month ago and I'm a bit confused. I'm confused because my network has gotten slower. I use to run a 8 Port gigabit desktop switch and all speeds were as expected with the 50mb fiber line and all. I would be able to download my updates and various other things at 5mb/s. But now I am only getting 550kb/s. Only thing that has changed is the switch. Is there something I am missing? Why has everything slowed down so much, should it not all have stayed the same?

Could it be because it is an older model and the hardware has issues or something?

Sorry my knowledge on switches is rather limited.

Are all ports gigabit?

Have you tried returning it to factory defaults and installing latest firmware?

you mention a test with your fibre, but have you actually tested your network as normal? like copying files via it?

or have you switched back to previous switch and it was at full speed again?

Test with each cable disconnected to see if a cable is causing it.

I have not tested it with pure file transfer only active download that I can see. I plugged the connections back into the desktop switch and it went to full speed download. As well as when I connected it directly to the router it self.

Some of those switchs have a single port that is setup for uplink. You must use that specfic port to connect to your fibre modem or you will get massive slow downs.

Is you pc nic set to auto auto?. Duplex is also important for speed.

If yours is the v1 switch.
Disable jumbo frame support and workload off loading on your pc.

It could be the v1 I would have to take it out again to just check on the sticker. If it is could you perhaps give me a link or a quick guide to which settings to disable? I see under the properties for the NIC a Jumbo Packet option that is disabled. Not sure if this is the same thing? As for the workload off loading I am not sure what this is as I do not see it in my setting list.

Okay so I checked, it is the v2. I switched two cables around as in one into the others port and vice versa and BOOM. It works fine again full speed and everything... No idea what that was. Going to monitor it and see if it happens again. Might be aging hardware.
