Sim Rigs

I know exactly what you mean. I've had so many false starts trying to get back into sim racing.

Hope you one day find the time and energy for it.

I've been running my AR wheel for a few days and I'm really impressed. It feels extremely solid in hand. Almost like a solid chunk of metal. I would have liked more switches, but the wheel is limited by Simucube Wireless. On a positive note, wireless works extremely well; I haven't had a single missed or lagged button press.

Slightly off topic, I tried out AMS2 for the first time this week. It took ages to get it to even recognize my wheel, and after all that effort there was no force feedback. Immediately uninstalled and refunded on Steam. I've got better things to do than fiddle with basic functionality. Reiza needs to get it together. And I say that as a massive fan of AMS1. On the other hand, I tried ACC again and it's come a long way. FFB is great now. I actually don't mind that it only has a handful of cars. I'd rather they focus on nailing those few cars (which they seem to have done) than dilute quality with content.

After watching/reading lots of reviews, I ended up ordering an Ascher Racing wheel.

I couldn't find a cheap USB load cell interface, but I did manage to find a HX711 board at home. It seems relatively straightforward to DIY an interface with the HX711 and an Arduino Pro Micro. I'll hunt around for the Arduino and will report back on how well it works.
I was planning to by a Simucube wheelbase and Cube Controls wheel to go with my Clubsport V3 pedals. I wasn't sure about how the wheel would mount on the wheelbase and if everything would work together properly so I just bought a Fanatec Podium F1 wheel with the DD1 wheel base. Works great without any issues. I don't like having to waste time getting to stuff work and would rather spend my time doing laps. Hopefully you get all your stuff sorted out soon.

CubeControls was on my shortlist too, but I'm happy to have gone with AR. I bought the Simucube 2 motor-side QR to fit the AR wheel on my Mige motor. I'm quite happy I did as it has zero play and it makes it really easy to swap wheels. I sometimes even remove the wheel entirely and use my sim rig for Warzone.

I'm not familiar with Fanatec's DD1, but I do know the upgrade to DD is amazing. What are you racing these days? I'm really enjoying ACC at the moment.

Where would you guys say is the best place to buy a seat to use on a rig? I'm looking for something with recline or fixed backrest side-mount in order to adjust the incline of the seat.

I've found fixed backrests to be a little uncomfortable, unless you tilt the entire seat.

I bought a reclinable seat (just a single seat) from a car accessory store. If I recall correctly, the owner of the store was into sim racing and kept the other seat in the pair for himself. So you may have to find a buddy to split a pair of seats with you.

Has anyone had some experience ordering any of the listed rigs from digital-motorsports.com? I have seen a collection of glowing reviews online, interspersed with some negative reviews. I see they ship to South Africa and even list their prices in Rands (excluding any form of import duties or taxes of course).

I ordered from them earlier in the year. Ordered a DD1 wheelbase and F1 Clubsport wheel. Paid on Thursday, received on Sunday.

They charge for shipping on top of the cost of the item but when it gets here, DHL will request payment for VAT. Once that’s done, you will receive your item.

I will definitely order from them again.

Thanks Vinodh, That's a mighty impressive time for delivery.

I will give them a try.

Still using my T300RS GT and TH8A. I recently drilled the pedals into some plywood to stop them moving under braking and made a make-shift clamp for the T8HA involving M6 bolts/nuts and some plywood. The only non-ghetto thing I have is my Valve Index - I really feel like VR is a make or break for sim racing these days. I don't enjoy games nearly as much without it. (Of which is mainly Assetto Corsa and iRacing).

I am looking to getting a sim rig soon, but they're not cheap ($500+ for a GT Omega or DIY 8020 style). The Playseats are garbage and massively overpriced.

My GT Rig is locally available at R3200 and my product quality is unbeatable at the price. Reviews speak for themselves.

Quickly dropped in here with a random subject. Don't know if I should ask this here?

I've been watching reviews on wheels and it seems as if though the T300RS GT should be dubbed the king of the budget/entry-level wheels, but I can for the life of me not find one in stock from a retailer that's legitly reliable. Do any of you know where to look? Or know anyone that's selling one of these wheel combos? It's the GT one with the T3PA pedals?

Would love to get into FH5 with one of these and get into car meets and drift days on ACC and BeamNG.

Cheers

Hey guys

Hope everyone is doing awesome!

I designed myself an aluminium extrusion rig a few years ago with the Famexpert software.
Anyone know a cheap retailer pref in JHB that I can get specific aluminium extrusions cut to sizes I order?
I’d like to price it all to see if it’s at all viable for me to build or just buy from guys making them already.

Thanks all ;)

I wasn't able to find a shop that was willing to cut my alu profiles when I looked around a few years ago. I got the sense that the shops I had contacted considered it a "more effort than it's worth" type of job. I ended up getting a mitre saw, alu blade, and cutting fluid to cut mine myself. It goes through the profiles like butter.

Maybe try 3dprintingstore. I saw that they sell/cut alu profiles to order. Maybe they'll cut your externally-sourced alu profiles for a nominal additional fee.

Thanks for that brother.
Will def have a look later this afternoon ;)

No worries, let us know how you get on.

A small tip: fit castors to the rig BEFORE you fully assemble it. Otherwise you'll end up with a monstrosity that you won't be able to move easily. Gelmar sells soft rubber wheels for cheap.

Hehehe … heard brother ;)

Will def put castors on … already cleared a room for the rig itself … and already bought the triple screens so will dedicate a whole room for it (lol@me) … it won’t move but the castors will def be something I build it on ;)

That sounds like an epic setup. Please share photos of your progress.

You'll have to move the rig at some point, whether to clean, paint the house, relayout your room, etc. And then your future self is gonna thank you for those castors.

@shadow.clone … thanks for all the advice.
I went through the costing and hassle and finally decided on a local retailer to actually just go ahead and buy the rig from.
I would like to say that the support from them so far has been second to none!
The build is in progress and should be delivered on Friday afternoon.
I will definitely provide pics and a complete review of the awesome service and actual product perhaps a day after mounting and testing this long time dream with my currently midrange peripherals.
At the end of this year I will be upgrading the wheel and pedals to a DD and nice rims and Heusinkveld pedals. 😉
Pics coming soon 😉

Nice! Great to hear that you're nearly sorted with your rig.

A DD wheel with Heusinkveld pedals is going to leave you grinning from ear to ear. They feel like an extension of your body, rather than just computer peripherals that you interact with.

Start thinking about SimVibe :p. Turning it off makes my rig feel dead. It's one of those things that you cant live without once you experience it.

All the talk in this thread makes me super excited about the rigs that you guys have … question tho … why no pics for us to drool over? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Fair point

Here is an oldish pic of my AR wheel for my Simucube setup. Still haven't finished my button plate 😞

does any one know the rough percentage to work out for the VAT/customs

I'd say roughly 21% before shipping costs.

I just bought a McLaren GT3 wheel and a Clubsport quick release @ R4450 before shipping. DHL sent me a customs clearance costs of R940. That equates to exactly 21%
