Hey guys,

So I have a Hilux that I'm selling due to a change in circumstances.
I'm in the market for a small SUV, possibly something like Mistubishi Pajero SWB, or a Diahtsu Terios.
Does anyone have some advice personally owning one of these SUV's?

Pajero SWB, Pajero IQ, Gen 2 Suzuki Vitara etc are decent cars. Not so sure on the Terios

What's a Pajero IQ?
I mean IO? Older Pajero compact 3-door. With emphasis on older. But still very decent today. I'm sure you know it. It's a shorter SWB

Ah right! I have seen this before.

Very nice little 3-door vehicle.

Have you owned a Pajero at all?

I haven't owned one but I know a few friends who do - and lets just say the body will give out before the engine does (that being said obviously pick one that wasn't abused etc.)
A friend of mine's hit 1mil km the other day.

Bought a Terios about 6 years ago, now has about 230 000km on it. Enjoyed the car so much that we bought a second one as soon as we paid off the previous one.

Both are 4x4 versions, no diff lock so don’t know what type of 4x4. We have traveled through large parts of the country on all types of road and never had a problem.

Note that the Terios is essentially a Toyota Rav4 revision, just look under the sideview mirrors to see it says Toyota.

We still service the vehicles at a dealer but note that Diahatsu themselves have pulled out of the country.

Thank you so much for the replies!

What model Terios did you get?

Would advise u to stay away from the Terios. A friend got one brand new, and had nothing but problems. From one window never working (fixed 4 times) to enjin givin problems. She sold it 6 months later, with only 600km on the clock, and for a 30 000 loss.....
My sister had a older one, also many many problems.

One of my cousins had the 3rd gen Pajero 3.2 Di-D that was passed down to him from my uncle. Engine seemed very solid last time I drove it (although I am told that the 4M Mitsubishi engines are prone to head gasket failure and turbo failures). Was told the auto box has a special module that runs it and if that dies it will cost a small fortune to replace. Body panels are also freakishly expensive - cousin cracked the plastic on one of the reverse lights and Mitsubishi wanted 5k just for the plastic while other independent shops wanted around R1500 to 2k for a piece of plastic.

2nd gen Terios seem to be reliable from what I've seen. Know a few people that love them. It's all Toyota stuff underneath so you generally can't go wrong unless you buy a real dog that hasn't been maintained.

Can confirm with @Toxxyc about the CR-V. Hondas are properly underrated cars. Relative of mine bought the 3rd gen CR-V in 2.2 diesel with I think around 30k on the clock. Absolutely loved it. Eventually sold it to buy the 4th gen and then bought the same 3rd gen back from a friend (so now has 2). The 3rd gen one has over 350k on the clock and other than some cosmetic stuff on the interior, you wouldn't think it had done that mileage.

Did you buy a new SUV yet? What did you get?

I bought a 2000 Gen 3 Pajero 3.2DiD for under R90k in Feb 22. It's still going good with a few minor problems. Since I have the vehicle I have put on about 5000 km. It is my daily drive.

If you're buying any old SUV, I would recommend you 1st find a decent independant specialist mechanic close to you that can repair or service your car. There are lots of private mechanics around and if they are specialists in whatever car you have, they probably know what problems the car has as soon as you tell them what the symptoms are.

I haven't managed to find something.

The Pajero's that were seemingly in my price bracket had 450000km+ on it, and I've heard the 3.2DiD can have diesel pump issues which also affects the injectors which can cost close to R40k to fix (if it goes). That is all dependent on how the vehicle is maintained.

I'm going to look at one on Sunday I hope. It looks really nice in the pictures, and the diesel pump and injectors have just been reconditioned, so that has put my mind at ease.

I have a friend who is a Toyota service manager nearby, and he always helped me with my Hilux and with the missus' Etios. So I've been looking at the 2000 odd Toyota Land Cruiser Prado's as well, but they rare to find in the 3.0 KZTE engine. And I'm not too keen on a 4.0 v6 VX given the rising costs in fuel.

Thank you for the advice though! If I do manage to find something, or if the Pajero I look at on Sunday is a goodie, I'll drop a picture :).

If you manage to see anything in JHB, or Durban, drop me a pm please!
