Howdy,

I have a Samsung tab 10.1 that works but it is stuck on an old android version which isnt supported by the play store so the tablet is rendered useless.
I just want to be able to add some educational alphabet games and the occasional Netflix

Does anyone have any clue how to jail break the tablet in order to update the Android version to something usable?
Been trying to follow online tutorials on how to and nothing has worked so far.

*can I ask jailbreak advice here or is that considered pirating? 🤷‍♂️ Learning is gooood!

Hey dude. You can almost definitely unlock and upgrade the tablet and it's generally allowed as the Android OS is typically open-source so doesn't contravene any licensing restrictions. "jailbreak" is an Apple term.. doesn't really apply with Android. So yeah, you can talk about it here.

Unlocking/upgrading depends on your tablet model but almost 99% sure it can be done. It is generally rather tricky though as there's seldom a straight-forward and simple process. Feel free to drop me a PM with your device model and version of Android and I'll walk you through upgrading it or, worst case, can probably remotely assist you with it?

While jailbreaking is...frowned upon, we as staff a while ago decided that we'll allow discussions around it, as long as it doesn't turn into obvious piracy discussion. Your situation - go nuts.

THANK YOU!!!!!

Awesome, thank a lot. Will be sending you a PM shooooooortly

Whats the model number of the tablet, maybe LineageOS is supported.

Here is a screen shot

Samsung Tab 10.1 GT-P7500

Not supported by LineageOS, but honestly that tablet is so old it will probably struggle to stream Netflix properly.

There is a AOSP ROM available but it seems some features arnt working.

Rather pick up a newer one that was made in the last 5 years.

Probably a good idea. I had forgotten how old it actually is
Any recommendations for a basic tablet that?

Replied to your PM with steps, links etc.

As @Rickster said it's an old tablet.. but it's still pretty powerful so provided the battery isn't kaput should still work pretty well. I wouldn't be surprised if it managed to stream Netflix? It's on the list of Netflix supported devices.

If you do decide to rather get another tablet.. maybe take a look at the Vodacom Power Tab 10. It isn't a great device, but it's pretty damn cheap and works well enough. Otherwise another Samsung Tablet would be ideal - they're all pretty great, but a bit pricey.

I have a Note 10.1 that was stuck on Android 4.

Other regions had android 5.

So i used odin, and did the necessary.

Check xda forums for custom roms

So I managed to root the device and I have tried various adnroid versions.
Android 5 not stable
Android 6 stable + gapps installs (gapps keeps crashing and freezing the device)
Andoird 7 stable - No gapps (not enough system space to install gapps. Need to repartition device)
Android 8 stable +gapps installs (re partitioned the device to install both android 8 and gapps- not stable, tablet is now stuck in a bootloop)

no matter what andoid OS i install the bootloop doesnt go away....

RIP

use odin and go back to stock rom

I used to revive my S4 like this when custom roms seemingly broke everything

Download the APK of those apps

Unzip the APK modify the miniumum SDK version (check Google for detailed steps)

Repackage the apk file and sideload

This hardly ever works, and if it does the app is going to run really slowly and or certain features might cause it to crash.
That was my experience with it anyways 😷

Depending on the app you might be able to pick up an archaic version on APKMirror with a lower minimum version.

Usually the firmware numbers indicate the model number and region. Not sure if the Samsung naming convention carried that far back but on newer models South Africa is XFE and XFA, depending on network.

Ya im looking at these and the closest region is Africa Kenya

I managed to get ti back to stock with the above link i posted.

Not sure where I should go from here though. The goal was to try install andoird 7.1 as that was the apparently the most stable release for this tablet however there isnt enough system storage to install 7.1 and gapps
Thats when I tried installing TWRPBigsys which helped me change the size of the system space by re-partitioning. This is when things went wonky. Maybe the 8.1 version I installed caused the issues

Are you using the stock GApps or pico GApps. For your usage pico should be more than sufficient

Iv tried stock nano and pico

Android 7.1 takes up all the space. The partition is really small already, like 500mb

You might have messed up your cache or made it too small. As far as I recall there is a hidden partition on Samsung devices that should safely give you a bit more space. Resizing partitions is an iffy game; messed up my old s3 a couple times back in the day when I dabbled with this stuff. It's really hard to give specific advice without a logcat.

Check if the apps (and the ROM) you're using explicitly require Google services. I had an old phone that I ended up using as a media server remote that I just loaded the ROM, sideloaded the app and that was it. Worked fine till I moved over to something else; might be a feasible option for you.
