I've been stalking the Phones forums for the past few days now and am interested in this sale. What sort of guarantees does one have that a contract phones contract will be paid for? I understand that if the original owner defaults the phone is blacklisted.

TL;DR Yes it can be blacklisted, however, I'll make sure you don't sit with a bricked device :)

You are indeed correct, if the original owner defaults on the payments there is a chance of the device getting blacklisted. That being said, its never happened to any of the devices I have sold in the past.
I feel this is where Carb makes the difference with the iTrader system, I have told my buyers this before, if for any reason this does happen with one of the devices I sell, as a reseller, I commit to replacing the device with the same/equivalent to ensure you do not sit with a bricked device.
As a reseller, I accept a certain level of risk for these types of events and ensure I plan for them, however, I also feel that the buyer should also be realistic in the sense that nobody really buyers a R15k phone cash and then sells it a few days later for R9500, so naturally, when you buy a higher end device for less than retail, it is more than likely a contract device which the person doesn't actually "own" or it was imported.
