Decided to switch from my 7700k to team red (my cpu's usually last me 2-3 years, sometimes longer) on my gaming pc and I have zero knowledge about amd.
Current parts that I will be keeping:
3080
4x 8gb 3600mhz (need to know if this will be compatible)
corsair h100i, I have am4 brackets
nvme m.2 ssd
3440x1440 monitor (resolution is important for this decision right?)
matx case

This pc is only used for gaming, no streaming or content creation, no chrome browsing, nothing but gaming.
Initially I intended to get a 5800x however I've found articles suggesting the 5600x if gaming is the priority, looking through reviews theres a lot of tech talk that justs goes beyond me and doesnt help me decide between the 2. I'm open to a 5900x, if theres a considerable gaming benefit over the others.
Can anyone explain to me (in laymans terms) which would be the cpu to go for and why, in comparison to the others just for gaming

Hoping to upgrade either end of this month or next month so I also need a rough ballpark budget to set aside for a cpu and motherboard, resellers can chip in here and I'm aware that prices may fluctuate but just a ballpark would help

What games do you play? If they aren't CPU intensive, I'd stick to a 6 core 5600X or 5600.

The 5800X is terrible value for money.

1) Do you want to do RAM overclocking?
2) What is your budget?
3) Can you wait until March to do an upgrade?

With regards to the points above, 1) if you do want to do overclocking, I'd suggest the B550 Master from gigabyte 2) Prices are loopy right now 3) There will be non X versions of the 5600 and 5800 coming out which will be cheaper and better value for money.

Pretty much only single player games, no competitive fps or anything. My monitor is 100hz, not looking to max that but most of my games run close to that (apart from cyberpunk). Plying stuff like rdr2, monster hunter, control, dirt rally2, etc.

I dont oc ram or cpu, never tried that and dont intend to. I know previous amd boards and cpus didnt work well with some ram speeds, dont know any details about it though. I would like to keep this ram, if it works perfectly.

No rush to upgrade, everything runs fine right now, only decided its time to move on from the 7700k because I believe I can get a bit more performance out of something newer. I'm open to intel but they dont support pcie4.0 afaik, dont think that effects anything right now but maybe next gpu generation it might. I'm likely to upgrade my gpu in the next 2-3 years

One reason I've seen for the 5800x, and don't know how big a role this will play, is that it matches the current consoles core and thread count. 5900x is totally overkill. You probably won't go wrong with either the 5600x or the 5800x.

Socket 1200 motherboards from Intel already are pci-e 4.0.

The new series of processors from Intel that are coming (Comet Lake S?) are pci-e 4.0 enabled. Edit: Rocket Lake

They are arriving in March.

RDR2 plays well with 6 core 12 thread processors so I’d stick to that. You will notice stuttering with a 4 core 8 thread CPU.

Even if you weren’t memory overclocking, I’d still suggest the B550 Master. It has strong memory support for very fast XMP profiles and very good VRMs (it has the same VRM setup as one of Gigabytes most expensive motherboard).

100hz monitor at 4K res is fairly easily paired with a midrange CPU and a 3080 - once you get to 4K, the processing pressure moves from the CPU (at 1080P) to the GPU.

What FPS are you getting with your current rig?

If you buying now then I'd say get the 5600x with a decent B550 board. At your resolution you are more GPU bound than cpu anyways. From the reviews I've seen you better of going with a 5900x instead of the 5800 for value for money.

The 5000 series cpu's are the last that will work on AM4 socket and the next Ryzen release will require a new board and cpu. If your system is performing well and this is more of an itch you want to scratch then maybe wait for the next release.

Either way you can't go wrong.

I’m with Mr. Evil (he got his doctorate from one of those dodgy online universities asp I seriously doubt his credentials).

B550 is X570 but without the expensive “South bridge” controller and fewer USB ports.

Also, I want B550 because overclocking the BCLK on X570 can cause the system to blow up the NVMe drives.

Well right now my 7700k has 4c and 8t at 4.5ghz. Would more threads (6 and 12 from the 5600x for example) make a noticeable difference?
Really not in a rush to buy honestly, the job gets done with the 7700k

No 4k plans anytime soon, 3440 with gsync is my sweet spot for the games I play. I havent really benchmarked in a while, with rdr2 i basically max all settings and then started dropping some odd things like volumetric clouds bit by bit until the game runs solidly over 70'ish fps

Oh right, yes. 3440P is not 4K but it’s higher than 1440P, correct?

And yes, your 1% and 0.1% lows will be higher with a 6 core 12 thread CPU over a 4 core 8 thread.

I’d overclock the 7700K to 5ghz whilst you wait for an upgrade though.

Edit: if it gets the job done, why are you upgrading?

If you trying to push high fps then your cpu is holding you back. Since you gaming at 100hz you should be fine until the newer tech comes out. Perhaps try and get your cpu to 5ghz for some extra frames while you wait.

Personally i wouldn't upgrade now if i was you. I upgraded last year because on 1080p my 4670k was causing stuttering in Battlefield. Since you not experiencing any issues in the games you playing I'd say hold tight for a bit.
