Hi all. I have a slight dilemma.
My little gaming pc has a slightly over clocked 4690k with 12gigs of corsair vengeance ram and a gtx 1060 but with an H series mobo. Now this is fine for running my Sim racing titles at 1080p high settings. My issue is future proof. Z mobos for 4th Gen is like hens teeth and they cost an arm and a leg on the 2nd hand market... If you manage to find one. I saw evetech has a sale on a ryzen 5 1600 with 16gigs of vengeance ram and an X mobo for around R5600. Would it be worth it to go for that? Or should I stick with my 4690 and hope to find a Z mobo? Thanx!

Why spend money on old, 4th gen stuff?

Bite the bullet. Sell your current stuff. Go AMD 2nd / 3rd gen (3300x is looking sexy)

Also note, you don't need an x board for overclocking on AMD. The B boards overclock just fine.

You'd also be moving from ddr3 to ddr4, and pci3 to 4 (if you got a b550)

That's just my advice, take it or leave it

i agree with this. I had a fantastic 4th gen setup and considered getting the 4790k as an upgrade but for the money it wasn't worth it. Got a Ryzen 3600 with board etc. and I'm happy i made the change.

I was in the same boat as OP a year or so ago.
Had a 4670k system. Sold that and went with r5 2600.

With some nice specials here on carb, I managed to upgrade to the 2600 for around R1500 all in. Selling my old system here.

From 4c/4t to 6c/12t for R1500. That’s some value!

Thanx all for the advice. I am relatively new to AMD processors hence the original post. I completely forgot that you didn't need an X or Z mobo for AMD overclocking so maybe I can save a few on the mobo and spend it on a better cpu. I have a budget of around R5600 for a cpu mobo and ram. Already have a decent case, 550W silver psu, 240mm AIO. The 1080 or 2070 gpu will come later in the year.

I’d spend extra on going for a 2600 or 3600 instead of 1600. First gen ryzen was finicky ITO ram.

Also, read up re the evetech experience [emoji87]

Ja no I saw some horror stories about evetech... But then I know 2 guys who had no issues with them in Cape Town... So I'm conflicted 😂

I find the Ryzen 1600 an extremely good performer. Went from a 3600 with a 1080ti to 1600 with a Vega 56 and thought VR games and gaming in general would take a massive hit. Not at all though. Surprised the hell out of me. Sure - benchmark numbers are quite different but there's more to the numbers it seems. It's all about the actual gaming experience.

Gaming on 4K just fine.

Keep in mind that none of the non g AMD CPU's have iGPU's... So of you go for 1600, 2600, 3600, etc, you're gonna need a dedicated GPU

Sure, but how often do you need an IGPU? Troubleshooting?

more and more CPUs come without IGPU because it costs more and there’s limited fabrication capacity.

nothing a basic GPU can’t sort out.

No no, you misunderstand me.

I'm 100% for AMD, and 100% agree. I was just informing OP of the lack of iGPU because

The 1080 or 2070 gpu will come later in the year.

Just making sure he knows there's no onboard in case he's planning on using it with onboard until he gets his 1080 or 2070

OOoh, right. Missed that. Good point.

Generally avoid the Evetech upgrade kits - not because of service or whatever, but because they use really weird combinations. They also like pushing older parts like X370 and X470 motherboards or first/second gen Ryzen CPUs in the upgrade kits, presumably because there's no other way to get rid of stock. You also don't really save much money with them. Just get the parts you want separately.

I agree with everyone else's advice too. There is no need to get the 1600, it's very dated right now. Rather go for the refreshed version, the 1600AF (note the model number must be YD1600BBAFBOX) or the 3600. Then for motherboard, B450 is good value but there's been a bit of a back-and-forth around whether it will support the next gen Ryzen 4000; else wait for a B550 motherboard which will definitely support it.

You're not wrong, the 1600 isn't bad. But it's worth noting that VR and 4K gaming rely much more on the GPU than the CPU, as the frame rates will be relatively lower. Based on my personal experience, if you're aiming for 1080p 144Hz for example, the 1600 is a bit weak.

Indeed. Valid points. My point was to illustrate the capability of the 1600 compared to 4690k. If the OP is debating between the 2 - I'm guessing 144hz gaming is off the menu :) That's a whole different debate altogether

Yes thanx I know none of the amd cpus suggested have on board. I'll hold onto the 1060 till I get a later model. I'm thinking of holding out a bit longer on the gpu aswell because of the 3000 series cards. Hopefully it will drop the prices for that 2070 I'd love to have lol

With what I have atm, 144hz was only a dream in any case. As time goes on I'll try to get there. 1080p at 60fps is plenty fine for me for now. Forgot to mention I am coming from an extensive line of... Cough... Console gaming, to pc. So everything is still new and fuzzy for me. And with a budget of around 6k, not including a new gpu(plus whatever I get for selling my current cpu/mobo/ram) to replace my current hardware, I'm not expecting to be doing 4k at ungodly framerates.

Quick update and also to say thank you. I took the advice, and the plunge, and ordered a R5 2600, a gigabyte aourus elite B450 mobo with 3200mhz 16gig g.skill ram (none from evetech😂) . Will be pairing it with the new 2070S and hopefully I shall be seeing a lekker bump in performance over the 4690k. Shot for the advice buds, appreciate it 👍👍
