had abit of a hectic situation earlier this year that got me thinking I could probably set up something to help other families and provide facilities to areas that dont have them for the benefit of people who cannot afford them. the situation was that my son was born 3 months ealy and had to be in the hospital for almost 3 months. took alot out of me and my wife and medical aid paid back huge amounts of money for his stay there.

i was looking at starting something to help families in this situations with funding, counselling prem soothers prem nappies etc also thinking about a local hospital that doesnt have any incubators so if things really took off we could look at raising funds to equip the hospital with incubators (this would be far into future as i imagine its really expensive)

anyway i am going off, i have no experience in starting something like this and i dont want to half-ass it or leave my current job. so has anyone done something like this on the side? what is a realistic time commitment for weekend fund raiser events etc?

also in terms of the legal requirements this is what i know so far:
i need to registered the NPO with CIPC (costs like R475)
i will need to reg the NPO to issue 18A certificates for donations that come in
i plan to have a website to communicate and provide news updates, also looking at allowing online donations

other questions inlcude:
at what point will i need to have signed off financials for the NPO?
can donors sign up for a monthly debit?

what other considerations should i have? has anyone started up one of these and ran it successfully? if so please pm me i would like to have someone i can chat through during this process so i know i am going about things correctly.

Don't have the time right now to help - but know the feels.

My oldest son arrived 2 months early due to complicated pregnancy (early onset pre-eclampsia).
Birth weight came in at a whopping 1003 grams. Stayed in incubators for 3 months.. It's a hectic hectic situation.

So just want to say that this is an awesome initiative - if I have time in the future/goods, I would definitely help out where I can.

Also, my son is 5 years old now - still below the normal growth trajectory for his age group but growing well.

Good luck, and definitely subscribing.

thanks so much for the support, i am happy your son is doing well. my little guy is 8 months old now, he was born at exactly 1kg. i remember celebrating every 10grams he managed to put on during his stay and the worry everytime he lost weight. its a crazy time and there is so much going on so figure just having alittle support and helping hand can do so much for those families that are experiencing it. through our time there we seen people go through so much, couples who had twins and lost one, babies that needed ops mums who had complications etc.

i am willing to fund the start up of the initiative myself, once i have the direction and knowledge of what needs to happen i will let you know what we are doing and where you can get the news.

Yeah dude - went through same spells. Ups and Downs with weight.
It is a humbling experience, you end up appreciating life so much more.

I am definitely keen dude - looking forward to what comes of it.
