Hi all,

As the title suggests, just wanted to find out if it is possible to simply unplug the managed router from the ONT and plug in my own router or if there is more to the process.

Not keen on having the ISP have full control over my internal network and adding another layer between my pfSense setup and ONT just seems like a very awful idea.

Anyone who's attempted this who can advise if it's feasible or should I just cut my losses and go for the no router option?

If it makes any difference the ISP is Mind The Speed and is on Vumatel's fibre network.

As far as I know vumatel uses both pppoe and dhcp establish connections.

So it's entirely up to how mind the speed connects... Ie, do they use dhcp or pppoe...

If pppoe, it would be as easy as setting your new router to dial using pppoe and entering the username and password, providing mind the speed is willing to provide you with your pppoe details.

If it's dhcp, you should be able to connect using any router, as ip assigned will be automatic.

If they're not using dhcp, or not prepared to share the pppoe details with you, you're out of luck

I swopped out my old ISP router the first week I got it (I just needed my PPPOE details and it was super easy)
Was with accelerit (vumatel fibre installation)

Depends on who your provider is - For example where I work, certain areas like Midstream have vlans setup on the router itself. But generally it should be an easy swop unless you using someone like Active fibre which will not provide you with your PPPOE

What does your ONT look like - I would be able to tell you if PPPOE or DHCP

As far as i can remember the MTS connections are DHCP. I setup one for the inlaws a couple of months back and dont remember entering any PPPOE settings on the router. They are also on Vumatel network.

I can double check for you tomorrow to confirm if you require

Yes it's done via DHCP either clone ISP's router's MAC or phone ISP to reset MAC and it will bind to the next interface it sees just fine. I ran pfSense on Vumatel active ethernet for two years.

Drop me a PM for any assistance :--) I loved pfSense back before they turned into whatever the project evolved into.

Definitely DHCP
Put your router in DHCP mode or IPOE mode depending on your routers wording.

@Nerd101 Thanks for the assistance - much appreciated man

@DannyBoyOPC thanks for the offer but I think I've gotten all the confirmation I need

@mikewazar Just out of curiosity what are you using now? Still fairly new to this level of networking and basically finding my way around this new world.
