Bought an ROG Maximus X mobo on Carb, seller never mentioned that the retention clip on the top pcie slot is broken, have PM'd him regarding this.

Either way I have a slot on the bottom that I will not be using and was thinking of removing the clip from that slot and placing it on the top slot my that my GPU will be utilising.

Anybody have experience and can assist on how to do this?
I could utilise the top pcie slot without the retention clip, but while I have one that can be moved, thought I might give it a try, if there's not much risk of damaging another clip by removing it

does it seem this easy:

?

Fitting in another one maybe not so. High risk of scratching the pcb with whatever tool you are using and then you are possibly left with a dead mobo whereas you could have just left everything as is and it would all be still working. Rather just screw the rear PCI IO shield for the GPU properly with 2 screws

Thanks, I've come across this video- the general function is the same but the design of the clips has changed a bit, the plastic is thinner and consequently more brittle.

After inspecting it for a bit, I've come to the same conclusion as @Star_22. Probably not worth the risk of scratching the PCB or breaking another clip.

With regard to the deal, any thoughts on recourse against the seller? The item was listed as being in excellent condition in the original sales thread. I wouldn't describe a board with a broken retention clip as being in excellent condition.

I would argue a partial refund (we can argue what that value would be) is in order.
It's not the functionality of the board that I think justifies a partial refund, I'm considering when I would eventually sell this board on, I would discount by a certain amount to reflect the missing retention clip. This would mean I ultimately bear the burden of his mistake.

Or am I expecting too much/splitting hairs here?

Sure the board is no longer in 100% perfect just out of the box condition, for this a neutral or negative itrader is due imo.

However as far as partial refund etc goes, my thinking is as follows.
Does the retention clip not being there impact the boards ability to function as intended in any way shape or form?
If not, then live with it as is as asking for a partial refund over that will make you seem like a asshole.

However, at the end of the day, it's you who has gotten the board, and it's your money after all.

I've given him the option of neutral feedback/ partial refund. Not insisting on anything, so if he has a better solution, I'm open to it.

I'm okay to leave it as is, and post neutral feedback, but probably better to give him the opportunity to avoid that.

List the board model & post a pic aswell. I have about 20 dead mobo's sitting here, I'll happily see if I can grab a few retention clips from them for you. You can then just cover shipping (R100)

Thanks man, would appreciate that, it's the Asus ROG Maximus X Hero

Haha, quite possible, Asus for some reason feel the need to change the design of these with every board

Personally the retention clip don't do much if case doesn't move around are gets shaken. But of the odd times that you might move the case around it would be best to always check that the gpu is in full even if you have it screwed in at the back. But if you don't come right one can always make one if you where in gp could have assisted, but hey cable ties will also be better then nothing.

@5plus2equals9 I finally got the #$%%#%^ clip off! Took 12.7 hands and some witch doctor from down the road, but its off in once piece.
