Help!

HP 250G5 has 4gb DDR4 2133

Adding 8gb DDR4 2400

I know the speeds are dfferent but doesnt the BIOS just lower the faster one.

Unfortunately they are different modules which I'm assuming they have different timings. Can someone confirm this with the below pick?

The issue is the Laptop now keeps turning off randomly during random use. It wasnt before I added the 8gb. So is the 8GB faulty or the timings just off

@souljazk ? You know whats potting here 😅

Love how Samsung's memory is made in Philippines and China....

This is exactly how the world is turning at the moment.....South Korean company has their products produced in different (opposition) places for costing reasons....

Switch them around between the slots & retest. If issue still happens, use only the 8GB and see what happens. In my experiance Samsung RAM is very compatible, but with that said, HP is... Horse P... :p

HAha thanks, I was thinking about switching them around. Let me try that

You dont think I need to undervolt or change something in the Bios? @souljazk
Laptop BIOs's are usually very tied down but have a look. Have you upgraded the BIOS? Often this increases RAM compatibility / stability.

Ye went into BIOS and there is literally fokall you can do. Change the date is about it......

I found an updated BIOS but im to scared to update it lol. Last thing I need is a dead laptop because of a bad bios update.

WIll do it if the RAM swap doesnt work

How well does the laptop run with only the 8GB stick?

If its fine then its a possible speed or timing mismatch.

A rule of thumb is to always pair your ram sticks exactly, doesnt have to be the same brand but capacity, speed and timing.

It runs fine with the 8gb. RAM usage is around 70% though so more RAM would be nice.

I did buy 2x 8GB that were the same here RAM SALE . One of the sticks were faulty. Laptop wouldn't boot with it in. I always try get the same but I was left with only 1x8gb and 1x4gb that was different

Tried running the laptop with just the 8gb and it still randomly turned off. Which leads me to believe the 2nd 8gn DDR4 I bought is ALSO faulty................. . ..... .

The amount of time iv wasted troubleshooting trying to figure out the problem is rediculous

Shot in the dark.. Is one slot not faulty, and damaging the RAM insert to that slot?

I mean it's possible but what are the chances.

The 2nd slot has never been used since it was new.

I need to confirm which is slot 1 and 2.

Iv out the 4gb back in for now. If the random power loss stops happening then I'm blaming the 8gb ram

I'd assume slot 0 (or 1) is closest to the board. Can you test the 8GB in another machine? Did you run Memtest86 for 24hrs?

Put the RAM module in another laptop and see if the error persists.

Having a test bench is key to identifying dud parts.

My second approach to this would be to put both modules in the laptop and then hard reset the bios by removing the CMOS battery after hitting the BIOS reset pins.

That might force the laptop to think about what the fuck it’s actually trying to work with and BOOT at lower RAM speeds.

On a side note, always order SO-DIMM modules that are the same speed as the laptops current spec.

An even safer option is to order a paired kit of modules to replace all RAM in the laptop and keep the other RAM as spare. I’d suggest Kingston HyperX 2133, 2 times 8gig modules.

I’m ordering 2666 RAM for my new laptop because running laptop memory in dual channel sees massive gains.

I havnt tried the CMOS reset yet. Worth a shot. Will probably update the BIOS after that as well.

I don't have another laptop to test, Iv got DDR3 in my spare laptop. I will try make a plan to get another for the weekend. Problem is time. I had to wait over an hour to replicate the problem with the laptop losing power.

I dont have access to the laptop 24/7 unfortunately, Im doing a favour for someone that uses the laptop 8-5 for work so will only be able to look at it after hours when I can get to it.

It was supposed to be a simple RAM upgrade lol

When ever I think "Ah, this will be simple or" or "money for jam" I know Satan is setting me up for greater things. 🤣🤣🤣

Why is there no decently priced stock of 2133mhz sodimm RAM anywhere????????????

Probably just going to go for 2 of these guys and hope they run at 2133, unless someone has another suggestion?
I'd suggest getting RAM that runs at the motherboards specified speeds. Laptops are less flexible than desktops. I just ordered 2666 RAM when 2933 RAM wasn't far off the price but I don't want incompatibility.

Ye iv been trying to get 2133mhz RAM but it is so much more expensive than higher Mhz RAM.

For example I can get 16GB 2400mhz for R1360. Thats R340 for 4GB's
The 2133mhz RAM is R650 for 4GB's. almost double the price! You would think 2133 would be cheaper. But im assuming its more scarce which is why its more expensive. Surely someone should have stock of low speed DDR4 notebook RAM at a reasonably cheap price?

LOL the price went up last night 😂😵😵

I called in and they will honour yesterdays price! Yay winning. +1 Wootware
