Rain 5G Network Quality

so, decided the last try was to mount it on the roof. never been on my roof before. i could see the tower. pointed the X right at the tower and...

Woaahh! That is [emoji91]
And I was ready to give up lol

Glad it got it up and running. Rain 5G, highly recommended (when it works)

@PrismZA was part of the 1st 500 cohort on RAIN 5G.

Was amazing at the start, but in the last 2 weeks the signal has been pathetic - barely getting 10-20 mbps, where I use to average 300-400 mbps.

Lots of people are experiencing the same issues - engaged with a thread on MyBB around this - check it out there

Luckilly mine has been running over 550mbps since I got it in November, should hopefully stay that way. Great internet.

@JanvN Seems like people's experiences are about 50/50... even though I'm pretty skeptical I'm giving it a shot this month. Hopefully I don't experience a big dropoff in performance after the 30-day window.

I'll post some feedback here for anyone that's interested once I receive my router and do some testing.

Please do. Just moved to a coverage area and the fibre options are pathetic. Only TITC who start at R739 for a 10 meg up/down.

Okay so I received my router yesterday, just forgot to post since I was busy setting it up and doing some tests. Firstly I have to say I'm impressed with how quickly it was delivered, rica was a breeze and the sim was activated before I even got home from work.

So I have mounted the router outside about 2m up, but even so I'm only getting 'average' signal according to the rain optimiser. So far I'm averaging about 100 - 120 mbps on speedtest.net, although peak was about 220mbps around 8pm. So far there haven't been any connectivity issues that I've noticed.

I'm still planning on moving the router onto my roof sometime this week. I'll report back on whether there's any significant improvement or not.

I would suggest getting it on the roof. i was on my roof about 30 min ago re-positioning the router as i was actually aiming it at the wrong tower lol (Rain confirmed that 5G tower is dead). was getting drop signal/connection as the tree i have was blocking the signal of the other tower

now im getting 710 down 70 up on average. Try and identify the tower and get the router in clear view of it

@Stravanosa how did you find out what tower you're connecting to?

get hold of rain support online and ask them to tell you which tower you connected to. they will give you the street. OR
you can try the unwiredlabs way where you apply your cellid and you get a rough idea where the tower is based on a radius. but the first way is the easiest.

Hey guys, quick update...

Mounted my router on the roof this week, average speeds have pretty much doubled. So sitting at around 250 to 400mbps now. I haven't gotten round to contacting rain about the exact location of my tower, but will probably do it sometime soon.

Rain replaced my router an gave me the outdoor version. Tested it, still no 5G.

Next it's to put it on a pole and see If i can catch anything.

Still can't understand how I went from 5 bar 5G signal from the indoor router to absolutely nothing overnight

I am the same and still now struggling to het 5g signaal

I got Rain 5G about a month ago with the outdoor CPE. The speeds are great (200 down, 50 up), but occasionally the connection will drop entirely for about 30 seconds and kick me out of my game. Sometimes it goes a few days with no drop, other times it'll drop 3 or 4 times a day. Usually nothing will change on the router status page - constant 3 or 4 bars on 4G and 5 bars on 5G with the Internet icon remaining blue. It will usually come back by itself. But rarely all three lights will drop entirely for a few minutes and I have to restart the CPE.

The CPE is mounted outside, facing the correct direction according to the Rain website, but the branches of a big tree are directly in front of it. Not sure if this is possibly an issue? It could also be other people in the house connecting to streaming services, but I doubt it. PC is connected via ethernet and a switch, but when my PC loses internet, so does my phone which is connected directly to the CPE via WiFi. So it's not an issue with my PC or the switch.

Anyone with any ideas? Options I have considered are: moving the CPE to the other side of the house, away from the tree, but this would be much less easy to do than the current setup; or rearranging things to aim for 5 bars as well on 4G.

Hi guys

I'm jumping on the 5g train.

Few questions

1. Seems outside mount pointing towards the closest tower is the best installation method.
2. How is the wifi connection? Would phones, media boxes etc be able to connect without issues (in terms of connection strength) or would I need to run an ether net cable from the 5g router and distribute wifi in my home?

Advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

I mounted mine on the roof. ensure you are pointing to the correct tower (optimization showed a dead tower to point to until rain advised to point elsewhere). Trees seem to interfere with the connection, try an get a clear view of the tower

my router is about 10m off the ground (on the roof) an thus my wifi signal was poor. you are going to need a wifi extender. all depends where you place the router and the distance to it.

What wifi extender would you recommend?
I would have more or less the same setup, on the roof and in the range of 10m above ground level.

Hey guys, for the 5G people.

I got on the bandwagon around Jan and oh buy the speed was great. 600mbit down and 45 Up.

Fast forward to today. 10000000x people joined in my area. Max speed 200mbit down and 40 mbit up. As of last week I keep getting disconnected from the internet. It seems DNS drops. I can ping 1.1.1.1 and it keeps going, but a ping to google fails.

This service is turning into the same rubbish as Telkom LTE.

Anyone else experiencing this BS? Its annoying AF.

Same my side. I was around 600 down an now to 200 to 400.

Now during weekdays like today my internet just drops off an I need to reconnect a couple of times.

I also had to move the location of my router as overnight the performance just got poor.

The speed isn't that much of a concern. The disconnecting is beginning to annoy the living crap out of me. Especially in meetings and when I work remotely.

I’m facing the same problem. Been in client meetings and my 5G just drops an that results in me being kicked out of the meeting.

Unless it’s because I’m on meetings constantly I notice when it’s down vs the weekend where it might disconnect an reconnect without me knowing as I only experience this during weekdays.

Worst is when it drops. You reconnect an all is fine an as soon as you join a meeting etc it drops again.

it is annoying but when it works, it’s great.
