Hello need some feedback on RAIN 5G unlimited Home package.

1. Averages speed you getting?
2. How's the quality? Any random disconnects or slow speeds?
3. Does it go down load shedding? Saw an article Rain’s 5G load-shedding problem. This still true?

Any feedback would be appreciated

Got it for the kids.

1. Max 50 Mbps during offpeak (like 2am), 07:00 to 21:00 drops to around 15 Mbps
2. No, other than not being able to do what the speed should handle. YouTube drops to 360p very frequently, and if one person uses NetFlix it becomes unusable.
3. Lasts about 20 minutes after the power goes out

Wow MAX 50 Mbps? This is on the Home Premium? That sound terrible for a 5G speeds

Yup. Cell C (which I use for work) gets around 80 Mbps on an average day regardless of time. I'd rather pay more for a capped but stable connection than use Rain/

bud, are u sure its the premium service and not the home service? home is limited to speed, premium is not.
to me it sounds like u are far from site, or not "optimised" as i do 4K streaming and game same time on my PC with other devices active on the network...

Youtube is hosted locally at our Data centres, well the routes that is and Youtube according to their routing policies will not make issues like that...so maybe your wifi signal is a factor here, or tower or topology?

As for the network in general, i have moved twice, each time suppose to be out of coverage but i have had very positive experiences thus far in each case

If it were home it would be limited to 30 Mbps and would be cheaper. I have absolutely no clue how far it is from the nearest tower.

YouTube SHOULD work fine, but doesn't. If you right click on a video, Stats for nerds, it reports network activity mostly around 0 KB/s, spiking to a "high" of 300 KB/s (around 3 Mbps) every few seconds. Wi-Fi connectivity definitely isn't the issue, I have tested it to maintain in excess of 20 MB/s (nearly 200 Mbps) when transferring files between a device on Wi-Fi and another on LAN. Hell, even the Home package is advertised as being fine for a single 720p stream, but they get 480p on a good day and 360p the rest of the time (with only one streaming at a time).

Honestly though, /care. Fibre next month, then they can hop onto their own VLAN on the 1000/200 connection and Rain can GTFO. Fibre costs less than Rain and my Cell C data combined (R 1,499 vs R 999 + R 599). This is my third bad experience with Rain, but my wife knew better :p

First was 4G several years ago which would get up to 8 Mbps with a massive antenna on the roof, second was 4G the kids were given last year for school work (but come 08:30 every week morning, Google wouldn't even open), and now this. Plenty of people report no issues with Rain's performance, but I've had 0% joy at multiple locations.

weird man....well some good ol fashioned support couldve sorted you, but seems your sorted on fibre.
however, i feel that the topology (distance, line of sight) might be culprit if you have tested wifi. they do not have nearly enough users on sites to be congested at this stage.

Rain 5G Premium (R999pm) here. 0.53Km from my tower (you can see it only after signing up. If you login to your Rain profile in the My 5g sim section just scroll down to where it says you can optimise your signal)

200-250Mbps off peak, dips to 130-150Mbps during peak due to tower usage.
2 x 4K Youtube streams no problem
Upload speeds around 60-80Mbps.
This is all on Wifi 5GHz band.

Had issues during first 2 months of lockdown (tower crapped itself and Rain technicians kept blaming my router location) that took weeks to come right.

Thankfully not had any issues in the last 12 months, in fact I've had it up while the neighbors suffered with Vumatel fibre outages.
Power outages I can't comment, don't have backup power.

Pretty decent for R999 a month but only when things go well.
Rain support is utterly useless, their support technicians are basically MrD drivers with a laptop.

I signed up while fibre wasn't available in my area. For a new setup I'd recommend Afrihost Vumatel fibre instead - 200/200 for R1147 is pretty good.

@Oj0 your tower is 0.23km south west from the Progenix address so you should have amazing signal if you're pointing in the direction of the tower (cnr Bennie Jacobs avenue and Ebusi road) unless the trees are killing the signal.

I had no idea it was there - it's 100% coincidence that the router is aimed in the right direction

Just got off the phone with Rain, the representative said that we still have access to the 5G network even during load shedding. Pressing X to doubt here.

I started off on 630mbps, but over time as the service got more popular in my area it dropped to 100mbps. But around a year ago I managed to find a tower that nobody seems to be on. Either that or it has massive bandwidth. My signal is only -83 and 8db, yet my speed hasn't dropped below 350mbps. In peak time it still hits that speed, which still makes me think no one is on it because the speed is the same during peak and off peak. In the whole year it was down for maybe one hour, I remember everybody was down for that hour though.

Ping to local server ranges from 8 to 15ms.

Steam hits around 45mb per sec on average, but it can hit 50 some days so maybe there are a few people on it :ROFLMAO:

I do have a fibre point installed in my home for when that tower one day kaks though, I wouldn't be happy without at least 200mbps these days.

I didn't read entire thread but can confirm that Rain def shapes Youtube and Torrents to shit.

I had it since it came out. around 400mb down but 80mb up.

* 4k in an instant on netflix while torrenting at the same time.
* Never went off during power outages in the areas I stayed. Which is good as our cellphones networks would die instantly.
* Upload sucks, the moment you upload something it runs slow and for some reason kills the download.
* Torrents hit around 10mb down, but downloading off xbox/ps/steam would get around 25mb down.

It was quick and I never had issues with it. Support is non existent though. I moved to a 300/300 fiber link which is great for work as uploads that took 5mins before now take around 20 seconds.

However, I had more internet outages in a month with fibre than I did through the years I had rain. I almost switched back because of it.

I have the Home standard or whatever they call it.

Consistent 30mbps connection. The occasional dip but it's pretty stable, totally sufficient for gaming too.

Torrents are throttled to about 50-80kbps so not an option if you like sailing.

It's been stable for the most part, just lost connection for about 20 minutes but it came back up by itself. I do sometimes lose connection during load-shedding, normally after about 30 minutes if I do. But not always. Depends on how active the thieves are I suppose.

Just the way the tech works, I guess. Saturated uploads = slow downloads. It is recommended to rate limit your total uploads to around 70% to avoid this. Obviously if you have enough uploads to feed a small town then none of this really matters.

@Xander8807 Of course you won't have any issues when you work for RAIN😅
lol...i am on a client apn bud not company apn specifically to check for issues on 5G....
and lol thanks for making it public...for the incoming PM's, please note that the app and support function on the app is there and the first response time is like 10 seconds, mybb made a post about it too :)

Link to iOS app please?

afaik IOS doesnt have a myrain app yet, but they are busy building a new release and think it might be on ios then. you can kust log into your rain account and log support query if you need help
In that case, congratulations on your new position as the Carbonite Rain Customer Support Liaison.

True but I would get a max of 355kbps upload and it would kill downloads. Even though speed tests showed 80mb for upload.
My entire work sits at a DC and AWS so upload is crucial for me.

If all you care about is download and dont game online then its great bang for buck.

I game online daily and haven't had a single issue with latency. Could be good signal on my part (-95db).

Rain home.
Me and my son play online games together, and no problems, not even if other family members watch Netflix etc on the TV and other devices at the same time.
Youtube is a pain in the .....................whatever. Some days it works perfectly, others you can barely get 360p.
Tower is about 1km from me, so good signal.

Easy to say, hard to prove:unsure:

You anyways made it public yourself a year or 2 ago on Carb so not really a secret

I'm just glad they are installing Fibre in our area, finally. Once that goes live in September it's bye bye RAIN. Not going to pay R 999.00 and getting Home Standard speed where I can pay basically the same amount for 300Mbps Down/Up

I see you're on the 30Mbps package, that's good because with that signal you're not capable of much more anyway

I'm at -79db on my tower. Have you used the Rain signal optimizer ? Big trees blocking the area ?

Which fibre provider does 300Mbps for R999 ?

Looking on the Afrihost site, closest is Frogfoot at 200Mbps for R999.

APN would be "Engineering" and my details like my MSISDN would be added into the pool. APN is on "Rain" and my package is on 5G_PREMIUM not 5G_PREMIUM_STAFF, This is defined on ur IMSI inside our Cores where the policies are applied :)..

And true yeah, but people forgot as i PM's was quieter since then.
