Hello
Is Wi-Fi calling supposed to use airtime/minutes?
I am on telkom prepaid. I thought using Wi-Fi calling at home won't use airtime/minutes. However after checking balance I realized it uses. I also tried turning on airplane mode to see what happens. Still using up minutes/airtime. If is does use airtime, then what's the point of it?

Yes it's supposed to use minutes and the point of it is for people in bad coverage areas and when roaming.

So basically they charge me for using my own Wi-Fi??
They charge you for the use of their infrastructure (even if you're not using it from your device to their infrastructure, their system it still needs to do routing, loggin, an outbound connection to the recipient, etc).

If you want calling that doesn't cost anything additional, use WhatsApp or similar. Wi-Fi calling is purely to combat bad signal and has nothing to do with cost.

I've actually had more complaints from sex lines friends that the connection is worse with WiFi calling enabled.
Which network was this? I'm on Telkom Mobile and just using their GSM network at least 70% of calls that go over 2 minutes will just garble out.
I think I will try their Wi-Fi Calling and see what it's like.

How many are we talking? One or two, or complaints bythecantloads?
Well seeing as I only have three friends, only three friends complained.

I am also on Telkom, never really had too many problems with the network when calling. I think it is very area dependant.

Shot for the confirmation. I hope this wi-fi calling works out better for me. Telkom contracts are such value for money (when they work) I loaded about R75 airtime late last year and haven't needed to top-up since.

Yeah Telkom used to be even better value for money, nowadays they have been more aligned with other networks.

I am still on the FreeMe 20GB package and receiving calls to upgrade almost daily, but I refuse because none of the current packages rival it.

I get that wifi calling is "supposed to combat issues with bad signal" but my Vodacom iPhone sticks to "VoWifi" even when I have the best 4G signal possible. I maintain it's just an easy way out of upgrading and maintaining their towers.

If I get in the car and leave my house while on a call, the call just drops as soon as I lose wifi signal. Fcking stupid.
I disabled wifi calling on my phone and have had no issues.

Vodacom (in GP North atleast) is quite busy with expanding infrastructure as much as possible. The biggest issues they face is with old oomies that have problems with their erection of towers.

You believe how much people complain about signal in areas and when Vodacom wants to build a mast people complain and don't want it.

I chuckled too much at this.

I still remember back in the early 2000s (I'm old I know) they put up a tower in a church yard, everyone was freaking out. But once everyone started getting cellphones all the complaints vanished.
If the naysayers had their way we'd all be shitting in holes and a long distance call would be a pigeon that doesn't get eaten.

The best part is that the people that complaing probably smoke and eat junk food all the time and don't exersize.

I use Wifi calling because I often hotspot and this doesn't interrupt my internet when calls come through.

I very rarely use airtime anymore. The business line is a Telviva One line (on my laptop and the busines pays for the service), most business discussions though are via Teams or Zoom while casual office calls are actually generally through Whatsapp because its just easier at home. The company helped out with internet connections for staff who couldn't afford, I have a fibre connections so it covers pretty much all my communication needs. Actual calls are reserved for those occasions where 3g is kak or no wifi is available.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is more a VoLTE feature rather than a WiFi Calling.
