So I'm going to be delidding a few 8700k's this weekend, but needed some clarification on removing the silicone adhesive and reliding.

Is it safe to remove all the adhesive on the CPU and relid, I relidded this little i3 3rd gen and resealed by putting a tiny drop of superglue on each corner once the ihs was on. This will not cause the cpu to short etc? Watching Gamers Nexus vids and he says remove all silicone but his example seems to keep all the silicone on the chip itself.

All I did was remove all the glue add thermal compound and add cooler on top but making sure to keep the lid center

Hey dude. I delidded a few 8700k’s and I removed all adhesive on the ihs and around the cpu die too. Before getting the kit I used a chop stick to very carefully remove the adhesive around the die. Just be careful not to nick anything. And yeah a simple drop on each corner to relid should be good.

Sweet, also scrapped everything off as per the pics, and applied the ihs back onto the chip, so the bare nickel on the pcb is fine?

The i3 was just a little practice chip, was pretty easy and worry free. Just curious if having some sort of layer between the ihs and board is required.

Remove everything, both HS and PCB.

I use a toothpick and my nails.
Clean with surgical alcohol with a cotton-bud afterwards.

I personally re-silicone, but that depends on what you relid with of course.

Is superglue on each corner not a good way to secure the ihs?

The IHS should in theory never touch the PCB. The height is perfectly machined to accommodate the factory paste and have a slight gap for the silicone.

No, it should be fine, I just prefer having the CPU's look like they came from factory and any future delid you would be delidding superglue, which I am not comfortable doing.

Bare nickel on the pcb? You're going to need some thermal paste on the die. I used liquid metal. But in terms of the die and board, nope just glue works fine.

So would putting a thin layer of nail polish be a safer bet?

For the love of God don't superglue the ihs.. Get silicone if you want to reseal these things. Superglue gets into the fibers and will break the chip if you try delid it again.

Nail polish over the circuitry is if you're using liquid metal. More fool proof as a layer of protection from the conductive properties of liquid metal.

From what I've read it would be a matter of using a bit of rubbing alcohol to break down the glue and it comes of easily.

The glue is applied once the ihs is on, so it would be a tiny bit on each corner, so to delid again if need be would be a matter of breaking down the super glue with eg. acetone. Apologies if I sound like a complete idiot, just trying to figure out if I'm completely wrong.

As long as you have the relid tool, I would re-silicone. Re-sale on your CPU would also be easier.
Just a fine line along the IHS and remember to leave the same gap that they have from factory.

My personal CPU.
25C drop under load with Conductonaut LM, re-silicone.
5Ghz, All core, Full AVX.

Full avx at what voltage!? My 8700k also delided is at 1.32v but seige crashes without an offset of 3. Temps under stress tests is around 62c, wondering if it's worth the extra voltage to push full avx. Maybe have it max out at 75c. A mate did mine last year, silicone sealed copper ihs

Initially was at 1.32V (peak load), think it is set to 1.34V now maybe?
Played around a bit with the different LLC levels etc but got it stable in the end.

Never "hung", just random kick from BFV every so often. Has been fine now for 2 months.
Will check sometime tonight and let you know.

Peak temps in BFV gets to about 72C when it's hot in the room. PUBG never sees 70's.

What are you suing to cool the CPU? my 8700k that @KakHard delidded, does 5GHz all cores under non avx loads and with avx I have it at at a -1 off set, no issues at all when doing avx stress tests for hours. vcore is at 1.32

H115 Pro I think? Or just RGB I have no idea with all the RGB puke versions coming out. Bought last year around March.

There might be some other bios settings you need to tweak if you have only touched the vcore to get it avx stable.

I followed debuers guide for the 8700k,was lekker cuz I have the exact same board in the video etc... But ye defo need to tweak a bit, havnt looked into it at all
