Forgive my ignorance, I am not very familiar with consoles, why the time limit? Is it some kind of subscription? If so, can it be extended?

PlayStation+ is a monthly/yearly subscription(depending on which option you choose) that is needed for multiplayer.
As a bonus, you also get games every month for the PlayStation 3/Playstation 4/Playstation VR that are hand picked by Sony.

To access these 'free' games, you must have an active subscription and pick the games - as in, pick to download, but cancel, so the game is added to your digital library.

When the subscription expires, you lose access to the games. If you renew the subscription, you'll get access to the Playstation+ games again.

To add to what @Migs said, unlike the PS4 when I extend my PS+ subscription it doesn't automatically update the expiry date on the PS3. So to update the expiry date for the games, I would have needed to allow the buyer to login to my account again. This was why I had that high iTrader requirement for the account to be included.
