Item Wanted: Older woodworking tools
Packaging Essential: would be wonderful if you have it
Desired Age: don't care
Location: South Africa
Willing to accept a shipped item: yeah
Ballpark/Budget Amount: depends on the product

So a while ago my 2 boys (ages 14 and 11 respectively) expressed interest in woodworking. after some discussions with the wife/finance minister, we decided that it would be a great idea as we cannot always see these two in a corporate environment.

Now woodwork machinery and power tools (which I will tell you I don't have enough, and the wife says I have too enough) has an inherent problem in that they are noisy, and even with safety gear like earplugs, and safety glasses are not really safe enough to my liking for young boys, and neither very instructor friendly. So I decided that I would start with hand tools, and the basics, teaching them the what and where of woodworking, and if they love it, they can progress later to the electrical tool side of woodworking.

Now I have built up a set for each kid of essential, and some more specialist or nice to have tools. this is a steep learning curve for me, as I only had woodworking to grade 9(Std. 7) , and never for example learned how to sharpen and set a saw. So for me it is a question of learning how to fix, maintain, tune, use and look after some of these tools, and then having to transfer that same knowledge to the kids. and it is a really expensive "hobby" to build up basically 3 sets of everything. (we share some stuff till we have enough for each)

So I am looking for hand tools. some of the older stuff, as the older tools typically are made of better steel than the newer tools, better finished and if there was an issue , then hopefully the previous owners already did the necessary fixes.

So if you have any old, previously loved tools, please hit me up. If it is something really collectible, I will most likely pass it on to a few contacts who do collect, as for now I am trying to get decent, useable tools. for example, if it is a tool that me and the boys still need, and it has been well repaired, without impairing its function - I will still be interested, while a collector most likely wont be interested in a repaired piece, or piece that is missing something.

Looking forward to see what you pop up.

I will over time explicitly post pictured of stuff that I am more seriously looking for, or if this is a very fruitful excursion, some of the requests of some of the collectors.

+1 on your dedication and finding a pastime/hobby that in the same breath teaches valuable lessons to the young.
Basic tools and chisels should be fairly "cheap" to have sets of 3.
Bigger items like a hand planer you should be able to manage with only one between you three.
Electric sanders, hand drills etc you will run into needing more than just one or two. But then you can teach that you need to run before you walk[emoji16]. Blokkie hout met skuurpaper werk ook!
Chop & bench saws, routers and maybe a lathe will come later.
What do you currently have in your workshop?
I love the idea of woodworking and appreciate the dedication that comes with it.
Alas, but I don't have the patience. Loved to do woodwork when I was young and onto std 7

iexcluding a routerI only had woodwork till std 7 as well (yes, we show our age by saying that, and also nowadays they don't have woodworking in school anymore) I therefor never learned how to sharpen and set saws, or how to sharpen chisels.

so yeah, its a huge learning curve , as I need to learn how to do things to transfer that to the kids.

Although I have a decent amount of power tools (excluding a lathe) , that is not for them to use now till later.

So I have the basics for each: square, marking gauge , morticing gauge, coping saw , 2 sets of chisels (both cheap - the last set is a cheap set from adendorffs, that they will use to learn how to prepare a chisel, flatten the backs, and sharpen it), a smoothing plane (#3 or #4) , jack plane(#5), #71 router plane, #78 Rebate plane, 043 plough plane, 050 combination plane, #80 scraper, cheapo rasps, cheapo surforms, and a small flush cutting saw.

Even so, I would love to upgrade they cheapos, and get them each a decent "old steel" tools like decent old chisels

They have available for use, but not enough for all (i will either still purchase or have to fix/sharpen an existing oldie) dovetail saw, mitre box, back saw, cross cut saw, rip saw. We almost have enough scraper planes (#112), and some gouges.

they have already made (with my help) a block hammer, and next up is a marking gauge/panel gauge, a bench hook, then a shooting plane support.

They each have 2 x 6 inch clamps (xmas presents), orbital sander (xmas presents) and dremels / dremel type (bday presents)

They spent past of last week learning welding (my brother in law came to visit us, so I got him to give them a lesson) and from now on over weekends, we should have classes, and then they can play around during the week.

This is one of the items I would be looking for - a stanley 112 or equivalent (or even a stanley #12, #85, #87 or #212). we currently have one working one between us , and shorting a blade for a second one. Although they each have a stanley or record #80 scraper, this is better for bigger surfaces. The stanley 112 I have is perfect , but I had to spend around 4 or 5 hours with the new (other brand) 112, just to get the bed 80% level, so that it grips the blade properly, Yea, sanding paper also works, this leaves a lot better surface, , less dust, and quicker.

For your vintage hand tools, please see link below to an ad you might be interested in on Tools4Wood. Not my ad, just something I came across.

:)

I'm emigrating and am liquidating a whole workshop. I mostly have modern power and industrial tools though. The few fancy hand tools I have I'm taking with me. Let me know if you would like to buy anything miscellaneous. Clamps, consumables, wood, etc.

I noticed you mentioned you have everything but a lathe. I have a Toolmate Lathe with a swivel head which I'm looking to sell

It looks like this:

For R5000.
4 years old.

Will also throw in my chisels and other accessories for turning. Now that I think about it, I can also include my spare grinder which has stones and a home made jig specifically for sharpening bowl gouges.

Can't take a photo right now as the lathe is under a pile of projects I'm trying to finish before I go. PM if interested and I'll go rearranging things. Lathe's are great for kids - much safer than other tools like table saws :)

would love to ... but i am really like miles past where the bundus ends. kruger's border is like a km away
that is a bummer man, always see good quality old used woodworking tools at the flea markets here in Cape Town. Still use tools I picked up here years ago.
