Hi Carbies,

For the past few months I have been getting packet loss in Apex Legends on PC. This occurs only on Apex Legends and happens 8/10 games, no matter which server I am connected to.

I have a 50U/50D fibre line with Telkom as my ISP and Vuma as my line rental.

I have tried NordVPN and this solves the problem and I don't get packet loss with this. However using a VPN for me isn't a long-term option as I don't need it and don't want to spend R200+pm on one.

Because of this, I am looking at changing ISPs altogether and probably going for a Vodacom line instead.

So that brings me to my 2 questions:

1. Does anyone have any recommendations with regards to how I can fix this internally? I tried different routes and had the same problem.
2. If my only option is to change ISPs, who should I go for? Was looking at Cool Ideas because of the reviews on a Vodacom line.

I appreciate any help :)

PS - I am NOT too network savvy

Sounds like an ISP specific issue. Try Cool Ideas for a month, last I remember they prioritize gaming traffic. And I HOPE you are on a month to month contract.

Thanks, I figured this is might be an ISP issue. Luckily I am on a month-month with Telkom.

If I go with Cool Ideas, it’s going to be a 100mb line and a 12-month contract (other R999 setup fee)

Who is your fibre provider?

Irrespective Telkom as an ISP is a bad idea due to poor support and customer service.

Have you restarted your CPE and router yet?

Log a call with Telkom so that they can start investigating and troubleshooting from their end or report to your fibre provider, they might have to reset from their end as well.

As for ISP recommendation, look into Vox as their after hours support seems better than most others.

Before logging anything with Telkom, decide on a switch and let your new ISP fight your FNO for you - Telkom won't do shit and there's no rep on MyBB to shout at to get things fixed. Opening a ticket now will just delay your move

If I say terms like "VPN, Packet Loss, EU servers, etc.", the Telkom agent starts buffering

Exactly, I told Telkom to reset my line, they said call Vuma yourself. I dread having to ever call Telkom due to their incompetence.

The problem is we don't get to speak to their technical staff.

Probably going to go with Cool Ideas as ISP and Vodacom as line rental.

Afrihost (with Openserve) has been solid for me, and really well priced.
Never will I try Afrihost again. Gave me technical tests to run. I did. Did some more investigation. Proved it was their servers causing my lag. What did they do? Nothing. Complete silence. They bargain on people being too lazy to run tests - I was not. Will never support them again. /2c

Who is your current ISP?

I am with RSAweb and have been having jitter and lag issues for almost a year now and they seem incapable of fixing the issue. Looking to move in July so am also on the lookout for a better ISP.

RSAweb is said to be a top ISP but ffs their support ppl..If one more twat asks me a speedtest screenshot I might just go postal.

I'm open to betting R1000 its your line and not ISP

If you google "Best ISPs SA", RSAWeb says they were ranked #1 in 2022, but this info is found only on their own website.

That's when I crossed them off the list.

Why do you want to change FNO?
Vumatel are pricy but your fibre is alreadly installed...

Telkom as my ISP
There's your issue

I personally use Wondernet (Seacom). been on them since they were macrolan

Wondernet also has no activation fees and proper month to month
Also fast support - via Seacom phone lines

Wondernet also uses the Seacom lines to Europe so ping is usually like 10ms less than others.
I also play Apex Legends. No issues.

Also heard that Websquad is good, and lots of carbies use coolideas

It's probably not your line or your ISP, it happens when you get put on a Google hosted server and then your ISP just hands the traffic off to Google and they route it using whatever capacity they have.

So you can either use ExitLag for the ~R100pm or switch to Cool Ideas and use the free VPN they offer.

Edit: I never turn off Warp that I actually forgot about it, that should fix it for free, no switching anything needed.

Yeah maybe 5 deaf dumb and blind people voted for that shit cause if you log a call its often 5 or more days before you get any response from them. What I started going is harassing Metrofibre on twitter cause gets an almost instant response and after my last bitch and moan they seem to have fixed my line for now but I will still be leaving RSAWeb.

I went with CISP for a long time. Was great, until they got DDOSed, then great again, then OK, then I stopped caring as I stopped playing comps in CSGO, and they gave me access to internet at a decent price.

Now I am on Herotel, I connect to my router wirelessly (sacrilege, I know), I get 40-50 ping on the laptop, and if I get in one game of CS in a month, it's fine, it's about spending time with the buddies, not winning. Also, it's about winning.

I tried Warp, the free version of course. It unfortunately didn't help at all with my packet loss issues. I've tried to see how I can buy Warp+ or the paid version but can't seem to find where to do so lol.

Have you done diagnostics to identify the cause of your issues yet? A VPN will only help in very specific circumstances.
