Hi everyone,

Maybe someone can help me with this,

The background:

Had Telkom ADSL 20mb Uncapped with my Asus AC52U running everything wireless in the house. We had a 10mb originally, but noticed that we affected each other when playing games, streaming etc. so we changed to the 20mb line. For 3 years we had the odd issues with Telkom here and there, but we could all use the internet with no issues at all. Online gaming ping running stable and no packet loss. We were waiting for the fibre to be installed so we could switch over.

The headache started:

Metrofibre finally installed the network and we signed up with Axxess. They supplied us with a new router, which is the Tenda AC10, but from day 1, it was horrible. Packet loss went up to 70% and ping spikes up to 500ms when someone else uses the internet in the house. After playing around for a while, I disabled the WIFI on the tenda, and connected it to my ASUS to use as the access point. The packet loss reduced to small spikes, but as soon as we stream or just play a youtube video, the ping spikes. I eventually took the Tenda off completely and started running with the ASUS only, and it is still the same. We cant play online games on the Fibre at all due to the unstable ping, and the only way you can play is if everyone else disconnects from the internet.

A speed test shows we have the full 50mb, but at night, even streaming is difficult (constant buffering).

I can't see that this has anything to do with my router, or the fact that we connect wirelessly. We have used this router, with the exact same devices connected and the only change is the ISP and line. The new Tenda router is even worse than the ASUS rotuer.

If anyone can guide me what they make of this situation, ill appreciate it!

Get metrofibre to come out and check the connection, maybe a break in the cable

I have the same issues with the same router (and its only at night when the 2nd pc comes on)
Who is your ISP?

Funny thing is, it never did it while I was on the ADSL line, but as soon as my fibre got installed, it went down the drain!

the Tenda ( soon ill get another router to use while I cancel my line with Accelerit and go to Vox )

When Metrofibre initially installed in our complex I had similar issues.
Sometimes websites wouldn't load, only on refresh when it would come up.
Their technicians came through 3 times to diagnose, every time just checking the fibre cable from the ONT up to my PC.
The problem was actually dust on the cable all the way at the other end where all the cables connect together in the big connector box.
They blew it a bit and 100% connection from there.

I also find that every now and then my connection "dies", websites or nothing works for about a minute, then it starts working again. Happens about 4 - 5 times a day. I have asked them to come and test the line, but according to Axxess, Metrofibre said there is nothing wrong with the line (Even though nobody came here to test)

Best would be to in total control of your bandwidth and the way it's prioritized yourself.
Get something like a Mikrotik router, setup a queues to split the traffic properly / do some kind of QOS.
From what I've read the higher end Asus routers also have that functionality.
Example in my house : my PC is assigned 20mbps, the rest of the house gets 30mbps to share. That way everyone is happy, and I never see any ping spikes or packet loss or anything. The wife can steam, be on her phone, download in the background, whatever. Doesn't affect my machine at all.

I have tried that, i actually gave like 90% to the pf, and it still happens.

Hi everyone,

Quick update:

I moved over to Afrihost who so far has given me much better service.

They supplied me with a Hauwei Ax3 router, which we set up and as soon as it became evening was unusable. Setting the wifi channel to auto, will let the wifi work for 5 minutes, then it stops working, changing the channel manually will let the internet work for another 5 minutes before it goes down again. I eventually set up my Asus Ac52 again which stopped it from going down, but we experience alot of ping spikes. In game ping is a minimum of 70ms. Spikes go up to 300ms randomly for periods of 5 - 10 minutes, then runs normal again.

Do you guys think it could be a congestion issues as there are many other networks around me, but what puzzles me is, why didn't it happen before?

According to Metrofibre the line tests fine.

Speedtest.net ping is 27 - 35ms wether im connected via cable or wifi.

Thanks

Have you connected your pc directly to the ont at night and test ? That way you will rule out routers, wifi etc.

issues like this are usually linked to congestion at the exchange or issues on the line - I would hazard a guess and say line issues. But test with your PC directly connected - this is the quickest and easiest way to know.

And just to be clear, QoS is not the answer - very few SoHo networks come close to line-speed congestion and the use-case above is in anyways, not what QoS is for. Use VLANs instead.

Do your neighbors have the same issues ?

Accelerit (Vumatel is the backbone)
Dead thread but just wanted to know if moving ISPs solved your issue?

I'm with Accelerit and have been getting intermittent connection failures and packet loss all the time, at first I thought it might've been a cable fault but the packet loss subsides late at night which leads me to believe their network is probably just kak.

Hoping that moving to Afrihost/ Cool Ideas will solve the issues.

Yeah it has helped alot -it still happens randomly but its much less (plus the 24/7 support helps alot)
