I've got a GT630 just so that I have an output (using a R5 3600), but it's hitting almost 80C at idle. Is there anything I can do or check, shy of repasting? I've got some el cheapo thermal paste lying around, but I'd just prefer not to repaste if possible. I know it's not a fancy card by any means, but surely 80C at idle isn't a good thing??

Does it have a fan? If yes, is it working? If no to either, cable tie a normal case fan to the heatsink. A 120mm or even a 90mm at lowish RPM should work wonders.

It's got a fan, and the fan works fine (I think). Because of the high temps, the fan is ramping up to 80% to keep it under control and it's getting a bit loud. It's also a half length card, so I'd have to some serious MacGyver-ing to strap a fan to it

That card should hardly have the ability to hit 80c, unless you have the very small like 50mm fan on it which you should definitely be putting a better fan blowing on it.

I've had paste get so brittle it actually separates and all cooling goes out the window the minute those pesky drivers kick in on startup.

Update: I repasted it with the stuff I had from my Hypper212. With the fan speed locked at 50%, It's hovering at 72/73 at idle

Edit: Fan maxed at 100%, sits at 54C

It's a half length card. I think 50mm might be a bit generous 🤣

Sounds like it worked
It's better but not great. I think I might pull the shroud off and leave the heat sink on it, and I'll rig up something to keep a case fan close to the heatsink. That tiny little fan just ain't cutting it, it gets pretty loud and doesn't get quiet ever

I don't know much about these cards, but IMHO, 54C is high for idle at max fan speed.

Here on Carbonite, people sell unwanted hardware, maybe get something a bit less noisy?

I'm in the process of selling off some stuff I've got, I'll hopefully be getting a better GPU soon so I can game again.

@Thermal Grizzly ZA Should be able to assist
Idk if the paste is the only issue, I might need to take the shroud apart to clean whatever's under it. Although I would love to have some Kryonaut on hand, no lie 🤣🤣

All, or Almost all the steps one can take to cool a card:
- Clean out the case. This can lower temps
- Proper cable management. Bad cable management can cost you about 2 degrees
- Clean out the GPU
- Reapply thermal paste to the gpu
- Ensure the hot air can flow out and away from the case
- Get a case with proper airflow
- More fans. And on that note, make sure that inlet fan is actually blowing in and the outlet fan is actually blowing out.

If you followed all these steps and it's still hot, then it's a room temp or gpu issue.

What are you planning on selling? I am running a and 2nd gen Intel system. Also looking for something a bit newer.

It appears that it's not downclocking at all, don't quite know enough to say either way but if the GPU is always sitting at 875 it will generate more heat than at idle although not the same as having it loaded up and actually working though.
