Hi guys

Wanted some help on overclocking a CPU

So lemme start by saying I have no idea how to do this, and dont have the cash to buy another right now

I'm running:
intel 3570K
Z77A g45
16gb corsair Ram
EVGA 1080

I'm running games like Fortnite, Apex, dmc 5 etc

Specifically in Fortnite I get Fps dropping and coming back which I assume is because my CPU is being throttled?

All temps are fine and have a Phanteks cooler..

Should I be looking at overclocking my CPU? Or start saving for something better? Or look for other issues causing the fps instability?

Thanks for the help!

First let us know what your current overclocking settings are, if any.

If its max by power or ghz then overclocking it more could hurt your system.

Also if you want to overclock a CPU you need descent cooling.

Hey there

I am currently not overclocking at all, too scared to mess up my CPU!

Mu cpu and mainboard run at around 34 idle and 52 after a couple hours of gaming..

Not sure if I should consider overclocking if others having issues with fortnite as well, or becuase my CPU is throttling me?

Those temps seems fine for normal clocks but once you start adding voltage (to get stable higher frequencies) , its going to get toasty.

Even on water my CPU had hot temps (80+) at higher volts.

So what CPU cooler do you have and are you 100% sure that it would keep you CPU cool when overclocked.

I have a Phanteks tc12dx however am a little nervous of your watercooled situation is hitting that high temps than I dont know...

Is it possible to keep your PC running overclocked or is there a risk to break the CPU?

If you keep the temps at bay its fine, mine with controlled voltage and still at 5Ghz still does not go higher then 70C on water.

Doing some research I sow that there is some cases where people overclock that CPU and cooler to 4.4 and it stayed cool at 61C under load.

So its possible to overclock with that cooler.

I would say, start with syncing all cores to boost to max turbo clock (3.8Ghz) and see if the temps remain normal.

GTX 1080 with a 3rd gen quad core i5, good lord man. Your CPU is a bottleneck.

Overclocking will help but not as much as getting a new CPU.

Yeah man I got the initial PC for next to nothing and started building up.
Managed to trade up to a 1080 however kept the CPU and Mobo as I didnt know what to get..

In the short term I wanna try overclocking to help relieve the bottleneck and then in December I'm going to the states and wanna get a new CPU and Mobo...

Thanks bud I'll do that

Any specific software to use for overclocking? I noticed the mobo has the functionality as well.. but havent tried
