Quick post

I just want some second opinions to make myself feel better about this, but does anyone else think it's horrible for Openserve (via WebAfrica) to throttle a 200Mbps Uncapped Premium line down to 1Mbps.

I mean, sure, it's fine to throttle us, we broke the rules and used 29GB more than what we should, but come on, 1Mbps?! Atleast give me the bandwidth to still open a webpage without having to wait minutes for it to load.

What do you guys think?

I think in this day and age subscribing to any service that has hard caps and throttling policies is just ludicrous.

Isn't this a WebAfrica issue? Why drag OpenServe into it?

It is WebAfrica (via Openserve) and not Openserve (via WebAfrica) ...

I have a 750GB FUP with them.

I know, first world problems but its not the FUP I'm too stressed about,it's the 1Mbps that bothers me most

Openserve is a contractor for Telkom, so they will be the ones to outline the terms and conditions of leasing the infrastructure to third-party ISPs. There isn't much you can do, since you signed the contract with WebAfrica that should outline these terms and conditions.

It is a bit harsh, but the thresholds are pretty clear. And according to the site you would have gotten ample notifications that you are approaching your limits and need to slow down.
If they only cap you to 10mb? or 5mb? what will stop you from just carrying on downloading more and more at that rate? It's meant as a deterrent. And I'm sure you wont do it again? :p

Yeah - Openserve is the only Fibre supplier that I can see that has a FUP - so its not implemented by the ISP but rather by Openserve themselves.

I am on a 100Mbps line - (non premium line) and I have a 350GB FUP (its so stupid) like ..... a AAA title game is like 100GB these days, so whats nearly 33% of my cap on 1 download.... and If I had to be limited to 1Mbps - I would be very upset.

I say screw the "old" institutions that have this archaic way of thinking! Adapt or die!

This is a non-issue though.
"your usage between midnight and 06:00 am every day does not affect your rolling FUP threshold. So, if you are planning downloads make sure you schedule them for these times, and they won't have an impact on your FUP status. "
Simply let it go overnight. Problem solved.

Spoke with Axxess about FUP on OpenServe Fibre, they stated your line speed will be throttled to half of the original speed. Also spoke to Web Africa about the matter, and the guy couldn't tell me what the throttled speed would be, but now it seems that he didn't want to tell me...

This is true however, we live in a day and age where we need things immediately, so why be limited by leaving downloads or updates overnight? Especially if other service providers offers full speed...anytime without limitations!

yes, but the issue is...does he have other options...if, for instance, he has Vuma fire as an option...then he is golden.

He can just change ISP if he isn't happy with WebAfrica.

@OP: Please change the title, you should be blaming the ISP - WebAfrica, not the line provider...

Correct me if I'm wrong....I think the line provider is at fault here because they stipulate regulations to ISP's. Vuma or Octo has no such limitations.

I don't believe it is WebAfrica's issue since all their other Fibre suppliers don't have a FUP applied. Please correct me if I look at this the wrong way, but this seems to be an OpenServe issue rather than WebAfrica.

The biggest issue for me with these T&C's, is that no where (which I can find) does it actually state that I will be throttled to 0.5% of the 200Mbps. This surely would be a deal breaker for most people. I was well aware that I would be throttled either way, since I live with some bandwidth hungry people and at the time of subscribing Openserve was the only network available.

Giving just a little bit more than 1Mbps would atleast allow me to open a website lol.

I think it might be leaning more towards ISP, Why do different ISPs have different FUP with regards to the same line provider? The threshold amount also differs between WebAfrica and Axxess if I'm not mistaken.

This should not be happening thought! Are you signed into a contract of sorts with them? Do you have options as far as line providers are concerned ie: Vuma or Octotel?

Then why can other ISPs on OpenServe only drop to 1/2 speed instead of 1MBps? Clearly this is WebAfrica throttling, not OpenServe...

Cool Ideas FTW!!!! I have 100mbps Uncapped, Unshaped with no throttling. The most I used in a single month was 1.3TB. And the line is with Openserve....

I just mentioned in my previous post, I am switching over to Frogfoot Thursday, luckily I am not bound to any contracts nor am I paying for the new installation.

I'm not sure but if you check, you will probably find that it is the older ISP's that have this FUP still (over and above openserve) like Mweb and webafrica. ISP's like cool ideas, adept and the plethora of newer ones have no FUP, unless they supply on openserve infrastructure i suppose

NOTHING can make you feel better about having to use OPENSERVE as a fibre backbone, condolences.

Apologies, I did not know that other ISP's on openserve have more lenient FUP's, but they still have FUP. I think I saw that someone said Cool ideas on openserve has no throttling...so that is a good sign :)

They do have a fallback clause in their T&C though:
"Fair Access
To help ensure that all Customers have fair and equal use of the Services and to protect the integrity of the Cool Ideas Infrastructure, Cool Ideas reserves the right, and will take necessary steps, to prevent improper or excessive usage of the Cool Ideas Infrastructure. These steps include, but are not limited to:
limiting throughput;"

This goes for their service on all line providers though, not just OpenServe.

Edit: Not that I have experienced yet anyway......
