HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

Yeah, I guess the average price of a used HD600 dropped with about 1k over the past 3-4years? At least it seems that way since I've been getting into headfi.
I'm not sure but definitely the market for the original hd600 and hd650 shrunk when the hd58x and hd6xx were released. They're basically the poor man's OEM versions +-. Supply and demand is what it is when it comes to the used market for pretty much everything.

I thought the HD800S would be my end game and then i was disappointed in how little energy there is in the bass. Some people like it like that, I don't. Planar magnetics are where I found my liking. On the Audeze LCD-XC now and will try get the LCD-4 later this year. Running off my Schiit Mjolnir 2 and Gungnir (non multibit - but will upgrade sometime soon too) I get amazing musicality and detail

Do you still have the HD800s?

I had the Monoprice M1060 for awhile, and even at that entry level point they rocked my world. Real hard hitters.

Next on my list is a Fostex th-x00. Have you tried these (or similar) @ian_stagib?

That bad?!?!?

It depends what suits you. High end headphone hobby is all about finding your preference and then finding the gear that matches the preference. HD800/S is all about being analytical. I like things being musical

The HD6XX definitely, the HD58X not so much. Still a great headphone for the price, but the model I compared was not quite there. Probably the best bang for buck option to get into headfi.

Hmmmm, I've used the GSP500 for a long time. Which is just the open-back version of the same headset.

HD600 hold their value really well. New you are looking at around R7k, and used you can find as low as R3k and everything between. Keep your eyes open as they go relatively quick used. New you can look at CPlan audio and applix.

I have no experience with hearing loss, but have played quite a bit with volume controls etc. If you are planning on using it on a PC, I know you get software that limit the volume of all applications to a specific threshold. At first glance, this might solve your issue on possibly being bombarded with something really loud and damaging your hearing even further. Hardware solutions are pricy.

I cannot recommend the HD600 enough as an all rounder. The HD650 is also a great option, the initial difference is subtle, but they both stand in their own right. There are many, many reviews online. I am currently using a HD600 with a modmic 4. The HD600 is running through a standalone dac and amp. The mic is into a little usb dongle I got with a steelseries headphone years ago. I prefer running everything through usb.
Thank you for your response.

Loving all the sweet stuff on CPlan btw! never in all my searches did I ever find them.

it looks like I will be leaving the country in a few months, chances are I will have decided on my options by then. These higher end items are generally the same price wherever I think.

I know what you mean.

I've listed to cans that are 3 times the price of my Momentum 2.0 OE and I prefer the sennies.

They aren't super accurate but they are musical and enjoyable.

Then you need to try different types of headphones than those expensive ones you tried before. Another reason your momentums are maybe showing you that you want something more musical is because it's closed back. Closed back always has a better amount of bass, but at the cost of imaging and space. So I suggest you try some good planar magnetics cause the type of tech it is automatically provides better bass, even the open back ones. Stear clear of electrostatics though, although I'm pretty sure you wouldn't easily stumble on them.

Well, I’ve listed to several closed back headphones and several were flat and unappealing.

I wouldn’t say I have listened to every headset known to mankind but I have tried to listen to as many as I can.

The WhatHiFi expo was great. Tons of quality headies that were amazing. Way better than my momentum’s.

There is quite noticeable grain in the 58x once you go up the headphone line imo.

Still great value for money though.

There are definitely some closed backs out there that can give some space and separation. They Sony MDR-Z7 and Fostex Th-x00 for example.

Anyone have a fiio m11.
Keen to grab one, bit dont know if 10k is worth it.
How much better is it than my old samsung s8 and a dragonfly red ?
Battery life on s8 is a bit lacking , but getting a new battery is much cheaper than the 10k local re sellers are asking.

Or would you guys take the risk on importing one from Amazon ?

It will blow any phone out of the water. Not even in the same ballpark. You could use an M11 to drive full size, hard to drive headphones, with full clarity. An M11 can be considered by most to be a candidate for desktop replacement in most cases.

Hey guys,

Need some audio advice, HERE is the link to my question post to avoid duplication,

Much appreciated, thanks.

The fact that one can pick up a good second hand DT990 Pro (or non-Pro) for R1500 is pretty awesome. I wonder what you’d need to spend to match the soundstage and sound separation of the 990’s.. upward of R5k? They’re to headphones what the 2500k was to CPUs in its era (and well beyond) - timeless (yet affordable) classics that never stopped delivering.

If you ever come across a set of these around this price point, call me. I'll even drop my number in the PM to secure 😂 I stop in this thread every now and again to refresh myself on what I am missing. The bug will bite soon enough. I feel it coming😂

What is your use case for the DAP? I'd personally go with a BTR5 because I'd rather not lug around another phone sized device. Moreover, it means not having to deal with another expensive device whose battery, software/firmware, and resale value won't age too well.

Any suggestions to upgrade my Astro A40 with Mixamp?
Had these for just over 3 years , still great, but have an itch for something new
Always wanted to try a set of beyerdynamic , any recommendations to anything else, purely for gaming, watching twitch and movies, i hardly listen to music unless in my car

Careful, a decent headphone might get you into the music. ;D

@Ninja_Theory used Astro A40's iirc. He should be able to recommend something. What's your budget like? I would definitely go for something non-analytical in your use case. Nice and colourful for movies and games. Phillips 9500, DT990's, Fostex are the first headphones that come to mind.

Just a side note, you are going to have to run a modmic or other external microphone. If you want an all in one solution, take a peek at Sennheiser's 'gaming' range.

Thanks for the feedback.

I personally have zero experience with headphones, i got the Astros cause at the time matched my theme of my PC build and the mixamp was pretty cool.

I will have a check in the morning at the mentioned options.

I have a seperate Razer usb mic for voice ,

Budget trying to keep anything under R4000 max.

Benn looking at the m11 because it can be used for tidal offline,
When using my samsung for it the dragonfly eats the battery, the idea of a full days use on a charge appeals,
Although lugging another device around doesn't.

Great stuff, since you are using the Razer mic for voice already, you should be able to replace your headphones easily.

4k is a decent budget for what you are after.

Take a look at the link below for a 'newb' friendly list of commonly available headphones:

Are you looking for a DAP specifically or would portable DAC/AMP do?

Few question -
What is your budget?
What type of sound do you like?
Will you be buying more headphones in the future?
Do you have a decent sound card currently?

thanks for tip on btr 5, looks awesome and 1/4 of the price
There is also the earstudio ES-100 - it has tons of customizability. These are bluetooth receivers though so you would still need a source. If Bluetooth is not a necessity, maybe look at the ifi Hip Dac or Xduoo XD 05 plus. The Xduoo has a quarter ", 1 watt per channel and can swap op amps. Also has the option to buy BT connection afterwards.

My budget is around 2k
I like clean, detailed sound thats slightly warm.
I will be upgrading my headphones in future.
Currently running of just my motherboard. Its a X470 Gaming Pro which supposedly has a shielded dedicated DAC built in.
