HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

I’m considering selling my ModMic 5 Wireless to fund a Samson G-Track Pro with pop filter and arm. Not quite sure yet but getting close to making a decision. So consider this an early heads up. The ModMic 5 Wireless is a masterpiece and it works like a dream but my OCD wants me to consider the Samson.
I'm offended, you know I need a mic and yet you haven't been in touch with me

Lol. You def have first option if you want it (and... if I sell).. but I wasn't sure you'd be interested tbh.
Well its either a standalone mic or buy a whole gaming headset just for games requiring voice, which I'm not keen on

Any idea on how much you'd want for it, if you do decide to sell?

Sent from my BLA-L29 using Tapatalk
Mmm not quite sure yet. It's a scarce gadget here and it's close to R2500 landed. So I guess somewhere around R1500-R1750 (preferably R1750). Will give that more thought if I sell but whatever price I slap on it will be a win-win.

@dash09 what do you use for surround sound? Have you heard of or tried Hesuvi ? I'm going to test it this weekend. If it's as good as the feedback I've read, then I may just sell my Arctis Pro + GameDAC as well and go lock-stock-and=barrel audiophile on my gaming as well.

Haven't been down this thread in a while, just been crazy busy and felt like too much to catch up!

That said, I've been going down the IEM rabbit hole, considering getting somthing or other for casual listening without the hassle of overhead cans (in other words, in bed, beach (if I ever get to one ever again), etc.). There don't really seem to be any "open back" equivalents other than this open sony pair which looks cool but reviews were very "meh", seems like being open doesn't translate well to IEMs.

Considering KZ something or others (ZSX maybe, but ZST for $20 looks like a steal, but their product line looks so confusing), T2s or well... something.

Thing is though, and I know they aren't great, but I'm drawn to the Airpods. The big draw is that they are just so easy to use and unfortunately nothing comes close to them w.r.t. call quality (from what I've seen) which is a big win. It's very easy to just insert one and answer a call vs. fiddling with other earphones or vs other wireless earbuds where the mics aren't as good and pick up too much ambience (wind noise, car noise etc.).

if you are considering something from KZ - the ZSX has kak reviews and the ZST is the bottom of the range - just spend a little extra and grab a ZSN pro because it seems like its where the real value proposition stands (it is like 25 to 27 dollars) if you really want a higher end experience then the 8 driver models are expensive but not hugely better in relation to the price (i have the AS16 and it landed here all in at around almost R3k and it lacks a bit of bass because the bass driver is not a dynamic driver but is balanced armature) and the ZS10 pro is actually a great value for money higher end option because in its 5 drivers per side it includes a dynamic driver for bass

but at $50 more people will prefer the Tin Audio T2 so my eventual vote if you want to spend around $50 is to rather go Tin Audio .... but everything i have said above is moot if you are not bothered with sound quality

@Montezuma I've also heard good things (first hand) about the ZSN Pro. IEMs can be a treat, especially if well driven. I use a FiiO Q5 and Massdrop IEM's when I travel and I can confirm it's absolutely sublime. Edit: I paid R3k for the Massdrop IEM's (second hand on AVF).

Question

Would it be wise to buy an external soundcard for my Z906 system or would the laptop's soundcard suffice?

The laptop is a Lenovo T540p.

The laptop's soundcard is fine. Just use that, no need for an external soundcard unless you have other uses for it, like to drive a headphone or gaming headset. I tested my Z906 with some external audio kit a while back, and the results did not wow me. The Z906's DAC and amp does a half decent job for an entry level system, so coupled with the kak speakers (and they really are kak), any gains are marginal. The sub is 6ohm and the speakers are 4ohm. You could hear some gains if you change to better 6ohm speakers.. but it's not really advised as the amp will need an additional 33% power to drive them (might overheat or stuff like that). I have read that a 6ohm speaker upgrade works fine and provides a noticeable improvement in SQ.

Argh, their naming scheme! So I actually meant the ZS10 not ZSX (see, I thought X=10 and they were like ZST, ZSN, ZSR etc. so it followed... at least in my head) . T2 definitely on my list. From what I can tell, T2 = neutral and ZS10 = more V shaped. Either way will hold on to see if either get a good discount for Black Friday. Will order from Amazon because can't be bothered to wait forever or for them to get lost at SAPO if I order through Aliexpress.

Definitely care about SQ, but I have 3 sets of headies at the moment, so don't want to spend a lot on IEMs because a) already have nice headies and b) I don't want to worry about damaging them or losing them if I'm travelling, or at the gym etc.

My comment on Airpods was just the ease and that they make good phone calls, so useful for the car, going for a walk, bike ride, etc as a headset (i.e. not a headphone, it is such a pity they can't mix the sony xyz-1000 whatever SQ with the Airpod mic/call quality).

Does the laptop have 5.1 output? You might need an external soundcard if you want to use the Z906s for surround sound (5.1) gaming if the laptop only has stereo out.

Any reason not to look at the Blon Bl-03?

Afaik the only way to get 5.1 using an optical cable is DTS. PC games aren't encoded with DTS so you'd need a soundcard like a SoundBlaster Z that has DolbyLive. I'm still researching and testing software to take over surround sound duties. I'm currently testing Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and Hesuvi (I posted info on Hesuvi recently - here).

Well, I guess because I've never heard of it. Just did a quick search for it. Will check some reviews.

Yip, indeed, and it also unlikely that a laptop has an optical out. @Andrew_Smith you would at the least need to get a soundcard with 5.1 analogue out support or alternatively a 5.1 set of speakers that supports USB or HDMI input .

Not headphones but,
I just bought a audio pro t5 from one day only , the idea being to plug into my amazon alexa hockey puck in my bedroom to boost its sound.

Wow am I impressed, cost me 700 Rondellas (one day only ,sales price) and sounds almost as good as the Sonos stuff I have in my study (which cost about 3k a pop)

I bought two of them, one for me, one as a gift for a friends upcoming birthday, but am having second thoughts about giving it to him.

Blown away by the quality of this, its very, very good. Solid feel, nice look and most importantly sounds awesome.

This speaker looks great. I see RRP is 1k which is not bad at all. I’m pretty tempted. Is it significantly better than the T3 or not? I’ve been tempted to buy a half decent BT speaker but was planning on spending 2k. Maybe this will fit the bill...

T5 doesnt have batteries so isnt portable, havent heard the t3 so cannot really compare.
Reviews say the t5 has slightly better quality though.
I would say the sound quality is on par with the sonos play 1. Bit more bass on the t5.

Well... someone may have had a frustrating week at work and may have happened to buy a pair of Tin T4s from the IndieGogo campaign. Someone.

There's more on the different frequency ranges, all described in layman terms.

Bit random but can anyone recommend a Bluetooth 5.0 transmitter for PC. Curious to try airpods with my PC :)

Hey Ninja how has Hesuvi been treating ya? I need to try it sometime I think, see how the real GSX compares to the fake.
And I really want to try out CMSS-3D again. Back in the days before I started pursuing better all-round audio and was just into regular headphones and headsets, the cheapest I could find (I went through a Genius R150 set every 3 months, even had one of those weird clamp on ones), I loved the sound signature of CMSS-3D on my SHP2000 (super cheap smaller brother to the 9500) back then.
True surround became preferable though as that worked all the time whereas CMSS-3D only worked when Windows and Creative got a along which was an ever-evolving relationship.

Are there any items in the UK that people really want?

I might be able to assist, especially if it’s a bundle deal and 2 or more people can split shipping.

I wonder whether doing a group-buy on various modmics and.or boom pros and then splitting here would work out cheaper....

Hey Jolly. I was about to place an Amazon US order this evening for a few small things (2x headphone stand clamps and some stickers). If I share the order with you, would you let me know if you're willing to bring them in. I can DM you the order details.

Well, I don’t need anything and it might work out cheaper for you from the US store but I can still buy things here In the UK that you can’t (although that seems to be changing) and ship them to you.

I already have all of the audio toys I need.

Ah ok I see. I misread that you could bring them in. I assumed you were coming over here for the holidays or some other reason. Edit: I also have all the audio toys I need but I certainly don't have all the audio toys I want. Therein lies the problem.
