HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

More? I'll go deaf haha. I push both till comfortable rather loud listening volume. Been really enjoying the SHP for the last hour or so and then switched back to GSP mid song. The GSP does sound a bit more natural and smooth to me. With the GSP the snare sounds amazing with serious wack where as with the SHP the cymbals are accentuated a more. SHP has more "sparkle" and hiss high up and GSP does the mids especially well and has a slightly warmer signature. A guitar solo on the SHP really tears through the mix very nicely though I must say. I reckon it's definitely down to taste and the music you listen to. To me both sound great it's going to be very interesting to compare with a known entity when I get the 6XX.

Oh. I'd understood you just stuck them in at the same sound setting you usually have for the GSP. Nevermind then.

Have to say I'm extremely excited for the 6XX's , I reckon the "smoother" more laid back tone they're known for is going to suit me well.
From what I read into your sound preference, you won't be disappointed! The 6xx and uDSD pairing is far greater than the sum of its parts.

I can confirm that the entire HD600 series (incl. HD598) sound fantastic on uDSD. Although, to be completely honest, I have not had a headphone with me that does not agree with the uDSD. Then again, to really measure it's worth it would have to be A/B tested against other dacs.

In other news, I might finally be pulling the trigger on a Bottlehead or similar.

Awesome that's good to know. I am picking the 6XX up at postnet shortly so will be testing this evening, can't wait. I burnt in that SHP overnight and it definitely seems to have settled in. Placebo or confirmation bias perhaps but definitely doesn't seem to have that treble hiss it had before. Seems like things became more balanced. Quite enjoying it, especially if I play music that suits it strengths.

Would love to hear your thoughts on it. Also it's time to invest in a fancy dac/amp!

Have you heard a X2? Wonder how the SHP is in comparison...

Not sure what I should be going for next. I want something else for my gaming, as I have been using the HD650 exclusively for everything audio wise. Although it is very clear and clean sounding and I'm not tired of it yet, I still think I might have a more enjoyable experience with a V-shaped heady. (In single player games, for comp stuff the HD650 takes the cake)

Will keep my eyes on the classifieds section, maybe something cheap and worthwhile pops up.

Hahaha I see what you're doing. Believe me that R2R of your is definitely on my mind. Been doing plenty research on different options that's for sure. Thought I'd wait until I've spent some time with the 6XXs to further my understanding of the sound signature I like.

I see we haven't spoken much about standalone amps either. Surely with the decent DAC on the uDSD a standalone amp paired with it is a good option? Been eyeing the Aune X7S class A amp. It's balanced as well for future fiddling. Also definitely have an urge to try a tube amp at some point. But really getting ahead of myself here haha.

What dac/amp are you using at the moment?

Also an update here...

My search for a dac has sparked uncertainty yet again whether I want to give up on the midfi range before I go stax.

Thinking dac/amp combo now as a result.

Starting to miss your X2?

The uDSD.
We are in the same boat! I have the SMSL Sap ii headamp hooked up to the uDSD. Very nice little combo. Next for me amp wise would be something with tubes. Had a discussion with Scuba earlier this week... It feels like to get something better from the uDSD a big leap would need to be made. I have no doubt in the ability and prowess of the R2R11, it just feels that a headamp of similar price couples with the uDSD might result in something 'better'/different. I don't know. :p Too many things to consider.

You might say so. I did not spend enough time with it me thinks. I'm just a little concerned with comfort though, I've been gaming with HD600 series headphones for a rather long time now. And they sit my head for hours on end with no discomfort, in fact I forget I am even wearing headphones most of the times. I guess I am just itchy, there is no real reason to get a dedicated headphone for gaming... Rather get that modmic and call it a day.

Gonna stick my R2R11 on sale this evening. Price will be R5k. I still consider it a unicorn and an excellent stepping stone on an audio journey. Not needed since the Deckard arrived, otherwise wouldn’t be selling it.

Hmmm... Deckard > R2R11?

Edit: I think I missed a bunch with the pages I skipped to get back to date with the thread. xD

Indeed. Initially I thought I would keep the R2R, but I underestimated the Deckard -it does everything the R2R does, just much better. Putting the money towards a nice DAC.
uDSD < R2R11 < Deckard

From what I can gather the Deckard retails for something like twice what the R2R 11 does? So R2R still amazing for the price I imagine...

Modmic regardless.

Not sure what comfort the X2 might lack for. Anything more comfortable would have to be lighter with a plusher headband and there's not many such things around. I still keep it on all day easily though and it made my formerly considered amazingly big and comfy Strix 7.1 feel rather less so.

I do imagine a V shape might be more appreciated for gaming although I think cinematics is where that crunchy bass really shines. Together with my GSX1200 movies feel like IMAX except for only my ears getting bass feedback rather than the vibrations attempt to stop my heart.

I'd think the 600 is too reserved for gaming. Maybe the 650/660 do ok but I don't think the 600 is "fun" enough.

Both R2R and Deckard are superb value. New, the R2R comes in much cheaper, as you mentioned: $350 vs $699. Second hand prices of the 2 are very similar, but there's more chance of finding an honest politician in Zuma's old cabinet than finding a Deckard in SA.

For my peeps on the forum.

I will be popping my philips x2 on later 2day.

Reason: very similar to my dt770 and my curiosity has been cured lol.

I've been curious to sample an X2 for some time.
Interesting that you hear it as similar to the DT770, which is a closed back headphone.
That said, the Beyer does have excellent soundstaging ability for a closed can.

Here's another:

Bad photo or those pads look quite different to the normal ones, perhaps a wash would sort them if they are the originals.

X2 are lint magnets.
Just leave them alone for a week and it looks like it snowed on the pads or something.

Those don't just look dirty though, something else seems to be going wrong with those pads. And why would you trust an owner to look after his stuff well if he takes a pic like that?
