Hey man.. welcome. What will you be driving them with? If you have some sort of entry DAC/amp or higher, the HD650 is a very strong recommendation. Bass, mids, and treble are all well represented and it scales beautifully with better gear.
thanks man
going for headphones now and in 2-3 months or so when i have saved up a little more, will buy more equipment
so looking for a good headphones that can pair up and last me a good few years

HD650 is a definite winner... it would be my choice within your budget range. I have other higher end headphones but my 650 has never left my side.

I thought the 650s were closer to the R8k mark?
Good point.. they go around R3500 second hand and are generally very well looked after (from what I've seen). But.. they don't come around too often. The 6xx will be around the R4k mark and although personally I prefer the OG 650 (I can't justify why as I don't know myself).. as an entry into this world of audio, the 6xx is a good start as well. From what I've read, it's pretty much identical to the 650 ito SQ. Maybe someone who's heard both can chip in here.

I was in this position a couple weeks ago, was about to order the HD6xx off Drop but then found a pair of great condition HD650's on carb. Have enjoyed them immensely so far, a good improvement over my HD598SE's that had been my everyday headphones for a couple of years. Like my previous HD598SE's they're really comfortable, a bit higher clamping force but not so high that it causes any pain.

Nice stuff. What are you driving them with? They scale BEAUTIFULLY and they take to toobz like a fish to water.

At the moment just a Fiio E10k I've had since I had the HD598s. Won't be upgrading for a while (have a new phone on the way and various other CUD items), but will try the tube life at some stage.

That setup is just fine. Anything more and you'll just get yourself in trouble. The fruits are sweet and tasty... that's the damn problem.

HD800 is in my possession once again.
Folks, once you go HD800 you can never go back.
This is one headphone you can never let go.

The Fostex Purple Heart with the Lawton Mod (driver mod only) is exceptional. It's an easy recommendation for someone getting into audio as well as someone who is already lost in the rabbit hole. It's a really smooth and fun listen.. and the bass is phenomenal! So much of it, but tight and controlled and it extends right to Satan's doorstep. The Lawton mod does wonders. Amazes me how a few strips of stuff can make such a difference. But even without the Lawton, it's a superb headphone (in both SQ and looks).

Yep, what I'm aiming for too. Have the 650s paired with my STX. Next goal is a crack tube otl amp.

You could import one for around R3800. Or ask around for second hand one. There is one usually popping up.
Just not possible atm unless I stick to the 200 pro's for the next 6 months or so.
