HeaDphone Discussions. (Audiophile and Gaming)

Wow, you just made me want to upgrade my perfectly good HD58x. Thanks.
Haha, that was not my intention. I already own the HD600, so would like to have something different maybe? But if I own a HD650 again I will be just as happy. That's what I meant with 'if it comes down to that'.

I'll buy your HD58X regardless.

Will also consider the HD598 in a heartbeat. I miss mine so much.

I found some original replacement pads at Mitech. For some unknown reason, the twat waffle that has been keeping me on a string at Sennheiser South Africa all year has failed to mention that.

I've discovered the Elite Atlas's flaw. It's not a Spring and Summer headphone. With the way the weather currently is here in Durbs I can wear for it about 3 days then the pads starting annoying my ears and as soon as they've been off my head for a day they're going moldy and need a full clean. Rinse and repeat. No other headphone pad is affected quite this badly by our current nonsense weather, it's like the pad itself sweats as well in addition to whatever it's absorbing. On the shelf it goes for now.

And the hunt continues.

That's a shame. Disabilities suck.

As does Sennie clamp :p

I decided to add another AKG to my "collection" after making that post. Should hopefully get here end of the week or early next week.
No name yet, I wanna see what it's like first before I get judged (and no it's not in the K7XX family).

I love my K240 MKII. It's fitted with big plushy brainwavez pads, so comfy.

I am curious to know if anybody has had experience with the JBL Quantum Gaming Headphones? I have seen them being advertised recently, and didn't know until then that they made gaming headsets - wired and wireless.

Saw them on sale on amazon during black friday but never got around to researching them. They definitely look interesting but as soon as I see something labelled as "gaming" it creates doubts in my mind. I'm of the assumption that they might be good at gaming but shite elsewhere, I'm probably missing out on some good gear because of this.
They aren't cheap though

Any recommendations for something warm, musical with pumping low end? I wear my headphones for hours at a time so preferably something comfortable.

I would jump on a Fostex purple heart set, but they are rare at the moment. Anyone know of someone selling?

Also looking at these:

If I find something else on Drop to make the effort worth while, I will go through Scott and get them.

Sounds like you are describing an Audeze to me.

Yeah, i had the same thoughts as well...locally i see Incredible and Takealot have them, from the entry level to top of the range...which goes for around 4799. It was cheaper during the black friday sale at amazon, but couldnt find any decent enough reviews on it at that point in time. with JBL having the Harmon Kardon background, you would expect these to be good...but seeing as its new territory for them, its hard to justify jumping in at the prices there are currently, as you are paying for the brand name in my opinion.

I would actually love if the playstation headsets had proper windows driver and surround support, I'm sure those headsets perform quite well for just games and they reasonably priced

How is all my audiophiles doing on this blissful morning? So just an enquiry. I work for a high end audio retailer (physical showroom and online store), i have had many request for Dekoni Audio earpads from many clients that have mental collections. Is there anyone here that might be interested in buying them locally and avoiding paying almost triple as you have done when importing them? If so let me know as i am busy applying to become a dealer for them and would love to know which models most people would prefer etc. Also if anyone is looking at getting Focal's range of insane headphones hit me up 😉.

Howsit gents!

On the hunt for some open back headies. Sennheiser SA will only be able to get me new pads for my HD600 sometime next year it seems...

So in the meantime, any open back suggestions in the 5k range? I buy used. Open to any recommendations.

Also willing to go for HD650/HD6XX/HD58X if it comes down to that. Just don't want to spend my holidays with worn out pads...
Best headphones around the R5k mark is the HD560s imo, the first pair that Senn SA got came to me for a client, i have just had amazing reviews from client and from Demo'ing them in-store i can say they are really really good.

Ah! I think I wrote my post too ambiguous.

I got fresh pads for my HD600. I'm look for something that's more playful and less analytical. Think Fostex.

But I think I've set my heart on a Purple heart or EMU.

Maybe check Zeos' review of the Sivga Phoenix and Emotiva GR1 as well as Harmonicdyne Zeus.

Wish we had an easy way of getting the Zeus locally. I want those huge pads so bad, though not bad enough to pay our current insane shipping prices.

K361. Believe the hype.

I have no idea how something this small produces this much sound. Without a doubt currently my best headphone...and possibly my comfiest too, well, one of the comfiest.

With this, and the MH751 I also just got I'm good in headphone land for quite a bit.

So something interesting and I'm not sure why this is happening.

The MH751 only has 40mm drivers. I think this is the reason I need to push it much harder than other stuff to get the same volume despite it being a no-amp easy to drive headphone.

However somehow out of all my headphones this also has the best sound separation for lack of a better term. If there are numerous different sounds happening around me I'll hear them all and where they are coming from. Whilst everything doesn't sound as sharp or quality as the better K361 and my other headphones it's a more "complete" sound image.

I don't understand how it does this with 40mm drivers and only a 20-20Khz frequency range.

The K361 is better but like all my other headphones it tends to "crush" sounds. By that I mean is it will focus on the closest sound source and everything else automatically recedes. It doesn't completely bury it like the K7XX and X2 (well the X2 doesn't even bury it, it never bothers playing it in the first place) but certain sounds are much harder to pick out.

This isn't a problem when you are listening to music or watch a TV show or movie. Everything will come through and sound great. But in an open world game it somehow just doesn't have the space for the entire sound stage...none of them do. Except the MH751 it seems. And that doesn't make sense given numbers wise it's the weakest by a significant margin.

Hi, so I am new here.

I traveled a long road with always trying to get better headphones, but around year and a bit a go I became much more obsessed with Audio quality. over the past year, I watched countless hours of headphone/dac/amp reviews and after around black Friday this year I pulled the trigger and spent 5 years of savings on headphones.

Still waiting for everything to be delivered.
But the headphones arrived, and I am loving it so far.

ownership history present and past
  • Sennheiser HD201 (listened to them till the completely fell apart, and I had to chuck them away
  • Beats Solo 2 wired (luckily they didn't last to long, and I threw them away
  • Sennheiser HD380 Pro (daily driver at home pc until Hifimans arrived the other day)
  • Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC (still have them but hardly used, hate the sound)
  • Sennheiser Momentum 3 wireless (daily drivers at the office)
  • Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (currently use this as DAC/Amp)
  • Hifiman Ananda (my new babies for home use)
  • Topping A90 (still waiting to be delivered)
  • SMSL SU-9 (still waiting to be delivered)

Great choices! Enjoy them dude. Should last you a lifetime if you stop digging now.

But what does Zeos say? LOL

These are situations outside his testing

I only listen to the guy because I feel he gives a more complete or easier to understand image than the others if you feel I rely on him too much or that he's a pompous ass, (I have checked them but just on sheer volume alone they can't compete and then they chuck around way more musical terms I don't know)

Both are however Zeos approved.

Why has no one considered the fidelity X3s? At the current price of 249 (although it was 199 last week, it’s a complete no brainier.

No no no, don't read too much into my reply. I was just teasing. If you're happy with one man's opinion, then that's happiness from my side.

It's almost more valuable to find one reviewer whose taste overlaps with your own, than to try compare lots of different reviewers each time. There is a movie critic who has similar taste to me, so when a movie gets mixed reviews (e.g. Joker), I don't go with the average score of reviews of the movie, I check that particular critic's score to decide if I will like it.

So you can apply the same logic to head-fi, theoretically.
