For the past year or so, I have been carrying 2 phones around (1 with my main SIM card in it and the other with a Telkom LTE SIM card in it that I top up with airtime and then buy the Mo'Nice data bundles with and then hotspot to my main device - at R20 for a gig that lasts 7 days, I can't really complain). The signal on it has gotten super patchy and I would occasionally connect it to my PC when my ADSL line decides it isn't going to work). Anyways, long story, decided to try rain after a colleague bought a SIM and raved about it.

I received the SIM card yesterday (14/11/2019) and immediately placed it in my 2nd phone (a Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime - which I know for a fact is 4G capable) only to be greeted with no signal. rain then sent me a confirmation email saying that my SIM card was activated so I check again and still no signal.
I then contacted rain who advised that I should change the APN settings on the device to - (APN profile name: rain APN: rain) - which I did but the phone still doesn't have signal. The MCC and MNC default to 655 and 38 respectively - one consultant said that would be fine and another told me to try change both to 310. Still no dice. Think maybe I need to wait 24 hours.
In the late hours of last night, I decide to place the SIM into the 2nd slot on my main phone (Samsung Galaxy A50) which I had remembered was a dual SIM phone. Place SIM in, reboot phone, configure APN on the 2nd SIM (which is the rain SIM) and make sure it says 4G preferred, reboot phone again, still no signal (just says Emergency Calls Only).
I have been back and forth with rain over live chat who just keep telling me to configure the APN and restart or try another device but this is the 2nd phone I've tried and I highly doubt that both of my phones (which both have 4G connections on Cell C and Telkom Mobile respectively) are stuffed.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can sort this out?

Rain uses a different band to Telkom. Your xiaomi doesnt support the 2600 band for Rain.

Your Samsung A50 should support it per gsmarena it has 2600 band. Hmmm try the sim in the other sim slot? I know i had to input the APN into my phone sim settngs for the rain sim to work.

NB: My sim took a day to activate

Someone told me it was 1700 which I figured my Xiaomi didn't support. I just double checked and the Xiaomi doesn't support 2600 but my Galaxy A50, however, does.
The only thing I can think of is if the 2nd SIM slot doesn't support that band. I can get bars of signal in the top right but the network information just says "Emergency Calls Only".

I had a similar experience after reflashing the firmware of my friend's P30 lite to enable its dual sim. I can't remember which order it was in, but between the MTN and Telkom sim, one of them would only work when placed in a specific slot. Otherwise, it would say "Emergency Calls Only"

Had similar problems, my solution was going in tha networks settings, switching off tha auto search for network option, manually search for mobile network, once it finds tha Rain network, connect to that. Been working fine since.

So I swapped the SIMs around (rain in SIM slot 1 and Cell C in SIM slot 2) and reconfigured the APN.
Still just says "Emergency Calls Only". :'(

The only networks it finds on the rain SIM are TelkomSA-R, RSA Cell C, MTN-SA, Vodacom-SA and TelkomSA

Must be your phone. Perhaps try on other phones. I got it working on a Huawei P10 and P9 Lite

I'll test on a few when I get home. Might work in our LTE router.

Was driving home from work around 17h20 and an SMS came through saying my SIM is now active. Seems it was just a matter of waiting.
Thanks for the responses, everyone :)
