Since Newegg now ships to South Africa has anyone here used them yet to bring something in and was it a big hassle or are there any hidden costs?

I've looked at it a few times but unless you're buying something really small (ram/cpu) the shipping cost is too high to make it worthwhile. Bear in mind when you're browsing that the prices shown are Excl. VAT.

For eg a Strix 1660Ti is shows as R4959,99 on NewEgg, but ends up being R6330 with VAT, duties and shipping vs R6200 on Wootware.
For smaller stuff like a Ryzen 5 3600 it makes a little more sense - R3600 all in on Newegg vs R3900 at Wootware but I'd still rather go with the local, fast, reliable option for the extra few hundred.

So my mate is on a really tight budget and the savings from Newegg fit his budget so much better for higher quality components compared to what he could get here in South Africa for the same price.

So we have checked and double checked their shipping policy and how they calculate costs and so far we see that we would not be hit by hidden costs. Just want to make sure.

Why don't you compare price with ScottulusMaximus ScottulusMaximus
So you find the unit you want to bring in and give the info to him...He will then calculate a price for you. makes sense. He handles everything on your behalf. I have not used him personally but only found out about him this morning. there are many happy peeps who have brought in stuff through him. :)

Don't forget there will be no local warranty whatsoever - if anything dies you may be looking at R 1,000+ in shipping fees to return to the vendor.

Try Aramex Global shopper. I used them a fair amount some years ago and didn't see any extra costs. If Newegg offers free delivery, then Aramex has a forwarding address in NY that you can use. ZIP 11413, Springflield Gardens. IIRC it works out to about R100 per 0.5kg

Newegg uses UPS for the Shipping from their distribution until delivery in RSA. Also i spoke to their Customer Support all Import tax and duties is calculated in the final amount that you pay and if they have miscalculated they do not charge the customer more if they under charged it falls back on and if they over charged the refund the customer by month end whatever extra they charged you.

I'm all for saving $ but honestly, your mate will pay more going this route. 1) SARS *will* hit you with some TAX that no one seems to be able to give you exact amounts of, before hand. 2)If its DOA , he will have an expensive and long RMA wait..

I looked at buying a phone recently and the answers I got re import tax was anything from 1) none 2) 7% 3) 15% 4) 7%+15% 5) 7%+15%+15%. All in all, I just bought it locally for what would be = to the cost + shipping + TAX as per 5) and got it 24hrs later & I'v got warranty. I'v always viewed warranty as a way of saving $ down the line.

Another way to look at is is this: Saved $ (on your current assumption) as a % of the the local pricing VS cost and time to send it back. Usually when RMA stock comes back, it has certain stickers voiding it from TAX, but its not uncommon for the sticker to be "missing" & for SARS to charge you ...

To the best of my knowledge, the TAx's etc included are for the US, not SA, but I could be wrong. I'd get this in writing from UPS/ Newegg & SARS.

the newegg 2600X deal works out to a whopping : Screenshot R9418 as opposed to evetechs R8799 . So newegg is still more expensive , so how did a R1600 saving come into play here ?

are you seriously saying , including shipping , you were able to beat this price AMD RYZEN 5 3600X ROG Strix B450-F 16GB RGB Upgrade Kit . if so could you provide links , im looking at a similar upgrade currently
So not all things have the same pricing there are plenty of items i have found on Newegg to cost way more than here in South Africa. However here is one example of Newegg pricing vs Evetech for instance.
Evetech X570 Asus TUF Mobo R5600: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus

If i go onto Newegg add the item to my cart and continue to Secure Checkout that is where the Duties and Import tax is added to the final amount, and that amount from Newegg is R4397.27

As i stated earlier all taxes and duties are calculated before hand and i have checked this with Newegg and have an email from the person i spoke to stating this.

To the best of my knowledge, the TAx's etc included are for the US, not SA, but I could be wrong. I'd get this in writing from UPS/ Newegg & SARS.
All VAT and duties in the final amount are calculated on South Africa's Rates not US

He did not no as he actually went ahead with the order before i could bring this up.

Newegg deal vs Evetech deal

Put in TUF motherboard and 3000MHz ram. He is building a TUF Gaming alliance setup. Plus that is Single channel

Shopping cart + Shipping: Newegg.com Shopping Cart

👆 Duties and Import Tax add on for the Components he want's and that was his final amount paid.

Evetech shopping cart: No TUF RAM available locally to my understanding so i took the cheapest dual channel 3000MHz kit

So not all things have the same pricing there are plenty of items i have found on Newegg to cost way more than here in South Africa.
But as i said I have found certain things to be more expensive on Newegg than here locally so it's all down to research.
