New Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ with potentially 255bhp

I think we found the target market for the 255bhp version.
There was an older model that went on Carb early last year that I was keen to get, but alas it was sold out from under me. I ended up getting a Haval H6C. It is an absolute pleasure to drive, but it is way bigger than I need, as at most I have a work and gym bag in my car or the gf.

I was also looking at the 86- it's Soo sexy but I would always have to add alittle mods to make more torque. Same thing with the mx5- which I would also love to own.

Both great cars and both n/a.

Got the focus St rather as don't need to add mods and it's got plenty of get up and go when u need it lol. Ticks alot more boxes than the other 2 for me.

I think a small turbo 86 would be alot of fun from the factory or just do a super charged one from factory. Save all that cash on r&d

For £3134 (R59000) could DIY turbo it yourself.

You would need to tune the car and have it checked by someone who knows turbo conversions but that’s still ~R290K for the car and turbo.

I’d also not expect to see that money back so expect to keep the car for life - kitcars and turbo conversions do not sell for very much second hand. People say “look at all this money I spent on it, it must be worth a fortune” but it isn’t.

I would love to build a kMiata as a toy with a supercharger or k24 motor as a toy.

But it's a 3rd car than and not for sale ever. Always wanted a project car- NC could be a nyc base to work from.

If only there was a way to stuff a compact straight 6 in there and add cylinder deactivation so its also economical

Sooo

A bit of a buzzkill

Carmag.co.za says there are no plans to launch the new 86 in SA.

I wonder if that’s because SA is still on euro 3 spec petrol?

The new euro spec is version 6.

Edit: yes, looks like it Toyota GT86
It's the reason why the new Fiesta ST wasn't going go on sale in SA.

Diesel in SA is the latest Euro spec but not petrol.

*cries in 2020 Fiesta ST*

I think that the cars can run on Euro 3 petrol but if you want the engines to comply with their designed emission standards, you need Euro 6 fuel.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the new 86 is far better with emissions than the old one.

Basically, if you want to sell a brand new car in the UK and Europe, your car needs to comply with Euro 6 standards and they are strict about it here. If the car was to run on Euro 3 petrol, it means more R and D (even if that means trying to figure out a way to insert an older engine into the car) and that's not worth it for a car being sold in a relativity small market.

GR Yaris is going to be something special. Reminiscent of 90s sport versions. If it lands under R500k, I can see many opting for it over a Gti.

Hi all

So there’s a new 86 coming and it’s potentially going to be closer to the original Supra than the current Supra ever was: RWD, turbocharged and 255bhp.

I think this is a great option as the new Supra is hideously expensive and not everyone’s cup of tea. An 86 with Supra-Like traits might be more like it.

Certainly, it’s closer to my dads ‘89 Supra which has an in-line 6 twin turbo layout.

Loved my 86 however power was certainly a problem, even with a upgraded exhaust that sounded the part I knew I could never compete with anything much on the road that had the same sporty looks as it. Hope they keep the same design philosophy as the current model and don’t get too lost in the Supra mindset (don’t think it’s particularly good looking)

"wasnt" meaning that it is now?

I wonder if Carmag aren’t click baiting people?

“OMg, the new X car isn’t coming to SA. Read here” and then it does arrive and no one bats an eyelid after that.

Certainly, there was a big response from Fiesta enthusiasts when the ST200 was supposed to not arrive and now look, it’s here.

I suppose but I've noticed with the KIA stinger GT and the Hyundai I30N

The KIA is only available as a special order.
The Hyundai i30N is only being sold in limited numbers and certain dealerships.
If I remember correctly both were not originally destined for SA.

However we do generally get the shittier engines, eg the new micra has a diesel variant in MURICA!!!(F$^K YEAH!) but SA is only getting the 0.9L turbo triple....

Same with the Ford Fusion. They get a sporty spec with a V6 and all we get is the 1.5L, 2.0L and 2.0L diesel(Though these are rare and have the shitty powershift gearbox, so avoid)

This would be the perfect replacement for when I trade in the 86. Hope it arrives anyway like the Fiesta and others.

I like the look of the new micra, if the diesel was available in this country I think I might have gone for one of those instead of the Ford, though the ford is still more luxurious.

I’m sure that they are practical and well priced but I find them rather uninspiring.

Nissan used to make really awesome cars (180ZX, 240SX) but now they just seem to make mundane small family hatches.

The Juke can fuck off immediately.

Even Honda has managed to make a divisive Type-R! I like the new range of Honda’s, they are different and proud to be so.

Nissan seems to have fallen victim to its former CEO who has fled Japan and is hiding in Lebanon.

Its very technical but interesting to watch

Glad you enjoyed it.

That was one of his simpler videos. He’s a super nerd and knows a ton about engines, always looking at white papers and spec sheets before creating his videos.

He has a supercharged S2000 and is a huge Honda Fanboi. He’s cool.

I have yet to take mine around a track ..... would like to but I need better tyres first.

For reals man - take it to Redstar; track days every Wednesday & Friday, with cars only on the last Sunday of the month. It's like that track was made for the 86. Granted, these cars don't push that hard on the straights, but in the corners they just keep going.

The block is the same for the 2.0 and the 2.4, s

I can’t see it adding a whole heap more weight but the suspension would be upgraded to deal with the added unsprung weight and power.

This is simply not true. The difference between the turbo car and the n/a in the same chassis is vast.

The added items to make the turbo cars faster and still safe add alot of weight . The block alone is re-enforced. At 630K for the current car plus the extra cost for the turbo unit. The new 86 will not be cheap in SA.

I have actually worked on these cars.

So you’re saying that turbo charging my old a corolla would have been a bad idea?

There is no way this car will make sense in SA as the 86 is already a stupid purchase at R630K. When I still had my S2000 I drove it back to back and was very unimpressed but I was judging it as a potential replacement which it was not (this was back when it was still 300K... for the exact same car/motor/suspension combo they are now expecting you to pay R630K for). I have no doubt owners are happy with their cars because it is a fun car... but I can't imagine anyone is still buying them when there are SO MANY better cars out there for that kind of money.

As for the Yaris good luck with it costing 500K...highly developed, low production volume AWD monster? It might end up being even be more expensive than the Supra.

Speaking of which when I was recently shopping I received the full arrogance of Toyota SA around launch time. 2 months later they were still trying to get me to buy one so I went in and got hit by their usual 1960s sales tactics of bolting on 120K for a motorplan and saying what we spoke about on the phone was ex. VAT etc. Told the dude to literally F-off (and those who know me, know that swearing is reserved for a select few people). I posted the chat over at BMWFanatics when it was happening... Lo and behold they have called me again now offering me a brand new one for 949K... I doubt they have sold many. The reason I relay this story is that they probably know if they bring the 86 revision in they probably aren't going to sell many. Toyota and many of the others (nissan included) are in a situation where their cars (sub 600K) used to be overpriced or illogical but a brand fanatic or enthusiast would buy them. Now they are effectively in a territory (R600 to R1.5M) where the people who actually want them can't afford them or justify buying them and they are simultaneously becoming ever more diluted.
