B550 Gigabyte aorus Master - 16 Phase with 70Amp power stages some X570 boards dont even have that.
X570 Gigabyte AORUS MASTER - 14 Phase
Mr Jay2cents and those guys only tested on the Asus boards , could just be a bios issue on those asus board hence the reason the 3950X could not run at full power. That Asus B550 Strix Board is a 12+2 phase 50 or 60amp stages if not mistake.
That should run a 3950X without a sweat damn thats enough to run a Threadripper 2950X.
Lets Break it Down:
B550 boards support a full 20 usable PCIe 4.0 laneson the CPU, so you’ll be able to run both a PCIe 4.0 SSD and GPU
X570:
Will Give you a further 4 Lanes Pcie 4.0 from the chipset where as B550 will only have Pcie 3.0 Lanes coming from the chipset this is why you see no fans on the chipset like the x570 as pcie 3.0 dont run hot.
That is the most important difference between x570 and B550
The rest of the changes like rear i/o is and sata configuration is dependent on the manufactures and the various models they have and the layouts they choose to go with on those items.
X570 Boards with 2x 8Pin CPU Plugs only one is needed to be use ,you will never pull enough power to saturate the power of one of those 8pin connectors even with a 3950X unless you go LN2 then yes you will need both 8 pin connectors.
I Would not touch this board with 10 Foot Pole:
It Thermal Thottles running a 3900X 115 Degrees on the VRM.yet there was B450 Boards that could run a 3950X
So in Short B550 is just a slightly stripped version of the X570,PCIE 4.0 on the chipset is the biggest difference.
I think OP should wait on B550 boards to arrive locally for sale then make a decision.if the extra lanes on PCIE4.0 not important then i would think about going for a highend B550 thats feature Packed than a shitty low end stripped X570.
If you want to know about motherboards down to the nitty gritty component level watch this guy Below and the videos on his channel.
He gives you the full run down ,he is not sponsored by anyone so you get honest reviews from him and great teardowns on both mobos and gpus.
.
!!!!
Just a Heads up here is the figures for a 3950X i missed this in my earlier post ne Single 8Pin CPU can pull just under 400Watts. 3950X overclocked even water cooled cant pull more than the 400Wattson on a Single High Current 8Pin connector. So those boards that come with 2 8pin or 1x 8pin and 1x4pin only plug in the one 8pin on any board.
