Hi all

since I play BF5 and have started to really hate Windows 10 (pop up adverts within the OS!?), I’m moving my gaming to POP_OS!

Steam runs natively but Origin is a pain. Drivers are automatically kept up to date.

I need to do some tweaking to get the system optimised but I’m already 10 times happier with the move to Linux.

I’ll let you know my experience.

Lutris is pretty nice to have all your game accounts with their respective drivers streamlined on Linux

Also, AMD runs better on Linux
👌

Thanks, I have it installed and I’ve installed and setup Steam.

Now I just need to get Origin installed.

I’m seeing reports that BF5 players using Linux are being banned. Need to look into that more because that might void my efforts.

I’m still liking POP OS though. Very easy to work with.

Great choice, the System76 team do great upstream work and makes the gaming and ease of access aspects more appealing for sure!
Yeah these days most games should be a breeze to run, with just the last hurdle being online-DRM-encumbered ones that's even now being worked on as we speak. I really hope you have a great journey and hopefully stay along for the ride, and don't let anyone give you slack for considering dual-booting or moving back if not everything is jiving right with you. 😃

Thank you.

I have a 1tb Adata SX8200 Pro for Windows, another 1tb Crucial MX500 coming for Linux and an old 250 gig SSD for OS X.

playing around with POP on the 250gSSD for now as I want to see how good it is.

I’m hoping that I can run my multi monitor setup with POP and not have to create work arounds for BF5 like I have to do with Windows.

Still can’t get Origin to install but I’ve barely scratched the surface of POP.

Where are these pop-up ads? I've never seen any.
In Edge, you get the normal pop up adverts from the website and then a whole page pop up from Microsoft.

not only do you then have websites spamming you, you have to deal with Windows doing that too - assholes.

I bet you’re going to say “but do you even use Edge?” And my response is no, but that’s not the point.

I shouldn’t have to put up with shitty ideas from the creators of the TikTok of operating systems (other shitty ideas include installing PUP games with every major update, forcing office 365 to be installed, etc)

Leaving this here, for those that don't want to move from Windows (I for one can't at this stage).

You can use this tool to rip some of the guts of Win10 a new one.

Keen to hear how it turns out I also have a mate that moved to Linux full time and he games too @Marxox

Aah OK ya don't use Edge so haven't seen the ads.
I despise ads so I understand where you're coming from, just hadn't come across them in Windows 10 myself.

I love Linux just as much as the next guy and I am excited to hear your findings but your Windows and my Windows are clearly different somehow.

I haven't used any programs to modify it and I don't have any start menu ad Candy Crush or anything like that, I used Edge for a bit now and also only saw normal website ads, nothing popped up at me.

I had a bad experience with Windows of late that just make me question so much about how it’s created.

I installed Windows 10. It took my second SSD and put the boot partition for my main SSD on it.

I had installed OS X on the second SSD and it had left a small amount of free space for Windows to snipe.

Why? It’s just sitting there, minding its own business when Windows does demand to mix up the partitions on the drives.

I don’t get nearly as many PUPs (such as Candy crush) installed by default but I do get a few shitty games.

Not sure if that’s a regional thing, being that I’m based in Northern Ireland.

I like Linux because it does what it’s told to.

You should use Edge though.

It’s better than all the rest.

Except Safari of course.

I suspect it’s the difference between Home, Pro and Enterprise editions.

I’ve also not seen it, but I don’t Windows that much and likely Adguard DNS catches a lot of it anyway.

Had to go back to work this week after 2 weeks off.

Will give Origin another stab soon.

I see that people have been banned for playing BF5 on Linux.

If that’s true, that’s my gaming on Linux dream gone. Will post a question on Reddit to see if it’s still the case.

If that's the case, you run Windows in a VM on Linux and do the dirty in there 😅

Ah yes, I use a KVM-Qemu combo on my desktop, its like running a baremetal system in a vm and if you put in the effort you can hide that your on a vm (well hide it relatively well, these anti cheat companies look at everything).

I havnt had any adds shown by windows 10, been running it for years. Maybe referring to the add you get in edge when new feature has been insalled? Okay but then again most stuff I don't need or use gets removed via powershell... So if you hate most of the crap that windows bundles with 10...you can run this Lil script in powershell, please note will remove everything that is not needed and was installed by windows not your apps or programs loaded by you installing other crap, note it will also remove windows store so will become difficult to bring back apps that are bundled with 10 back like sticky note calculator ens...

This removes all that is not required and was bundled in.
Get-App package | Remove-Appxpackage

Or try removing something that bugs you.
Get-App package *cal*| Remove-Appxpackage

So this will remove anything it finds that might have cal in its name. So can just add what you want in there. Communication will remove the windows mail people and think one more thing...

Honestly, this is not a thread for “fixing”windows.

I’ve run scripts like that, it works but if anything, having to run said scripts just proves my point.

if I’m willing to go through the setup to get Linux to play Windows games, do you think I don’t know how to “mod” Windows?

Why are people hating so much on edge? Built on the same kack chrome is built on - chromium. Edge is faster though [emoji2960]

Tbh if that scripts is something we call mod windows then I'm missing something. Just an easy way to remove everything at once instead of using Uninstaller...https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.e288d1d042731847066dbd3d5bb5daab&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.tenor.co%2fimages%2fe288d1d042731847066dbd3d5bb5daab%2fraw&ehk=loDa40TPvKW3qqcCuWsdKPUwRiBw4M1ThFMJ%2bgpN5R8%3d

OK so I was running scripts to update my hosts file, remove apps, etc. It might not be modding but it was forcing the system to respect my privacy. All of those efforts caused Windows to break (multiple times).

Really doesn’t, you’re in the EU use Windows 10 N.

tbh sounds like you had malware.
/inb4 Windows is malware

I installed Windows myself and selected the non N version. I'm also running Glasswire with built in virus screening. I can do a scan with an antivirus you think is good if you want me to.

I’d like to know what was the whole screen ad for, since nobody else has experienced this I think it’s valuable info for when someone else comes across it.

Another nice source for decluttering Windows. I have not yet tried it, so use discretion.
