Hi guys,

I am looking at getting a new helmet for my bike.
Budget is max R4k for something that protects my all important, albeit mostly stupid, noggin.

So what helmet would you guys suggest?
Only looking at full face with pinlock, but looking for something that will block most wind noise at speeds around 100-160km/h

So lets hear your suggestions.

Just a tip (heh) - Helmets are generally either oval , round, or somewhere in-between. Someone might say that a given helmet is amazingly quiet and comfortable, and their head shape is different to yours.
If your current helmet was always really comfortable then see if you can find out how oval it is; it'll help you narrow down which helmets will fit you properly.

Also, a DOT certification means diddly squat - take 9 minutes and see this tongue-in-cheek but very accurate video. You want ECE 22.05 or Snell.

Can't really provide specific suggestions as I'm more in the dual-sport world, but Bell helmets have generally impressed me over the recent years with their simple, well made, affordable helmets, and their MIPS system is genius.

Im a mid oval shape so have been using a LS2 Vector C, but that has a crack in the shell so need to get a new one.
Haven't seen any nice looking Bell helmets around my area at bike shops, but maybe I was being blind.

Ah cool - wasn't sure how much you knew about lids. You change your avatar and it's like you're a complete stranger o_O

I've bought from them before... was something like $40 shipping when I bought my helmet there. You might not get the "newest" designs, but the closeout prices are pretty good.

All good.
And yea I fully agree with your comment r.e DOT certification meaning absolutely jack.
Watched a guy on youtube take a golf club to a dot certified helmet and it just shattered, and with the number of accidents I have been in this would result in a not so happy ending for me.

Thanks, will check them out.
I sorta have my eye on a HJC as well as a Airoh but R3k for a polycarb shell is a bit high imo, then again I did pay R6k for my carbon LS2... so again, maybe I am just being stupid expecting a lower price for the HJC or Airoh.

I was very happy with my Shark S900 Glow.
Only other helmet that had a better rating was the Shark RSI range.

Shark makes some very nice helmets, but sadly just a bit out of budget at this point.

Sorry man, I actually picked it up second hand from a mate that wore it a few times... Best bet is to always try a helmet on. Buy the best helmet you can afford :D

All good :)

My issue is that while there are a large number of helmets I can afford, most of them just stick a bunch of sales garbage in the information for the helmet that actually doesn't mean anything, pretty much like every cheap helmet raving about a DOT rating which means absolutely jack.

However 2 helmets in the same price class is not the same either even if the specs of them are 99% similar, i.e same shell, same features etc.

My main concern in wind noise, and while the best way to combat that is with ear plugs, I am not a fan of not being able to hear whats happening around me while riding in bumper to bumper traffic thanks to idiots on the road.
So want a helmet that blocks out most noise from the wind while still allowing me to hear the cars around me.

Anything faster than 160 and I don't really care much for the cars around me anyway so then I wear ear plugs.

So while I would love to spend R12k on a helmet as there is actually one I really do like, that is sadly out of my budget for now and riding around with a cracked helmet (minor crack just in the outer layer of the carbon fiber shell) till I can afford a R12k helmet is not really an option either as it will most likely cost me more than just repairs should a accident occur where I hit that side of my head.

Have a look at with a safety rating you are happy with and work from there.
You will find what meets your standard and in your budgets.
I found a Shark helmet in my budget and at the safety level I was happy with that i did not expect.

Check sharp helmet safety ratings. its a uk site where they measure helmet safety - SHARP - THE HELMET SAFETY SCHEME

Also google langston factory shop as Ive been seeing a good lockdown sale on facebook where they have an extra 20% off the helmets pricing. there were some really nice bell and shark helmets for under 4k.

I already ordered a Airoh Valor before the lockdown started.
Hopefully now that protective gear is allowed to be shipped (seeing as Spirit is open) I can get my helmet, and then continue waiting till I can go riding again.

Personally the one that fits the best maybe try on some AGV helmets they are very good and fit me the best Personally they start at around 4k
