Hi all,

Need some advice regarding a monitor for my God son as a Christmas present.

You just got his first gaming rig and now for some reason based on his research, he is 13 he should get a 144hz monitor.

So we went monitor shopping this morning and got various versions of what to get from all the shops we visited, from 60-75 will be fine, 75 IPS is better than 144, to 144 is the way to go.

I then said I will ask here to get the best advice as there is hardcore gamers on here that will give us a better answer as to what we should get as a good entry to mid level monitor for his gaming needs.

So please let me know what we should actually be checking in terms fo specs for his monitor.

Thanks all,

What types of games will he be playing? competitive FPS or SP offline games?

Edit: Cant find those deals anymore maybe I was mistaken. There is/was deals on a Samsung curved VA 144Hz monitor for around +-R3000 recently ( can't remember if it had FreeSync as well). Personally I would go for high refresh rate over freesync.

Thanks for reply,

He usually plays games like Call of Duty and Rainbow Six online, so not sure if that falls under competitive FPS, but definitely FPS online.

Thanks, so based on the replies so far we should look at 144Hz and IPS?

For the games mentioned above, definitely invest in 144Hz.

Specifications of the build would also be a factor before buying so that you can fully utilise your 144Hz monitor.

Thanks,
I will get his PC specs and post here for some further insights.

Ok here is some more info,
GeForce GXT 1660 is graphichs card
Motherboard ASUS TUF B450 PRO Gaming AMD Ryzen
CPU - Ryze 5 3600 (3.6GHz, 35MB GameCache, 6 x Cores, 4.2GHz+ Turbo

Just avoid getting a TN panel. They're a lot cheaper but the viewing angles are terrible. A TN panel is only suitable if you only ever use the monitor while sitting directly in front of it. But if several people are watching a movie or you're watching something while lying down on your bed, an IPS or VA panel will always be a better investment.

Thanks, and apologies for the ignorance but what is a TN panel?
