2nd hand 86s are cheap. Supra will be > R1M. 86 is still a fun ass car, but as others will remind you, there are many other options out there. I'm keeping mine

Supra < R1M. Oh wait, I'm thinking Yamaha R1M ;)

BMW actually made some interesting changes to their B58 going into the Supra, M340i and who knows what else, which will make tuning interesting. The N54 and N55 can be pushed to around the 800HP mark, and they have open deck cylinder designs. The latest B58 has a closed deck design, like the RB26 and 2JZ. They've also increased injector pressure quite a lot. They've then added forged pistons and crank. Lastly, they've used plasma transfer wire arc welding to coat the cylinders, same as on a R35 GT-R. With a few mods, the new engine might hold up well and produce relatively big power with stock block and internals.

That is interesting thanks for the info. If i remember correctly the N55 was also killed because of Emissions regulations.

I want one... If I can take an angle grinder to the back to get rid of that fugly lip.

Well you can always get an aftermarket Hyundai Elantra body kit for that problem.

I like the new Supra. It’s going to cause the 86 to plummet in value though since most people will just see it as a poor mans Supra.

I’ll just pick up an 86 on the cheap and save on insurance.

2nd hand 86 value wont change much. Supra comes in at a much higher price, while the 86 is a great platform for the mod community because its budget friendly with a massive range of options.

New supra is apparently going to be north of a million rand. Not exactly the same price bracket as the 86.

Are you fucking kidding me? R1 bar for a Supra?
It’s using a second hand fucking engine FFS and I don’t care if it’s performance engine, thats way too much.

Well in 96 the Supra was about $40K, adjusting for inflation that's $64k. just doing a straight ZAR conversion gives you R872K never mind taxes and the usual markup for imported cars.
Not that crazy if they are aiming at the same segment of the market but yes, definitely not worth it.

I’m going to tell me dad this since his 1989 Supra cost him R70 000.00 in 2003. He got an offer of R180 000 for it from a dealer. I’m sure he could get R220 000.00 if he wanted.

A million rand. Don’t even. It had better come with a nice interior, well sorted gearbox and handle like a dream.

It'll be a good car...Just isn't a supra as far as I'm concerned.

Its got BMW written all of it, I can even smell it from all the way here
You can smell it see it and feel that it's a BMW just with a toy badge here and there. [emoji14]

I don't know why they rushed this. Why not do some in house dev yeah it's costly but for a cult car you need to bring a decent successor to the table or rather leave it be.

The supra legend the we all know is msotly becuase the 2JZ was overengineered to hell and back. Before doing engine internals you could push the stock engine REALLY far. I doubt any car in the future would do that because of the amount of engineering that goes into modern car engines these days.

The Supra in my opinion still looks mean AF....just my own opinion

I quite like the new Supra. If the stories are true, then Toyota really worked hard alongside BMW in the R&D stages and it may end up being something that outshines the mkIV. Whether I would choose it over a Porsche or not - well, I'd have to drive them for that comparison.

The Z4 IMO is actually better than what Toyota alone would have come up with, had they have to do a Supra alone.

Atleast it will have a nice interior and better internals. Look at the GTR, it is insane to think that a car costing R 1Mil + is beaten by a BMW 3 series or C Class Merc's interior, feels nicer and holds up beter over time, 6 month old GTR sqeeks and rattles inside.

Like z3llin said it is only well known cause of the 2JZ engine block. If it didn't have that it would not be very well known,
and Fast and furious of course
The 2JZ Engine block was a cheap motor that was available in lots of other cars in America as well like the
Toyota Altezza /Lexus IS300
Lexus GS300
Lexus SC300
Toyota Cresta
So engine blocks were available in less expensive cars as well and had potential for being very modder friendly if you had deep pockets.

There are other engine blocks that also comes close to the 2JZ like the RB30 and The Ford Barra Motor Blocks for Big power(The 4.0 on the Falcon and Territory).

This Block of the Supra actually already has mods available from Germany, as it is the S58 Motor, which is the same as in the M3, M2 Comp, X3M, M4.
And you do not tell me that if this was made purly by Toyota they would have made a better Motor.

Great engine that but its just wrong to relaunch a supra and steal a BMW engine for a powerplant.

That said, I am sure purist will take it out and put in a 2jz as an easy conversion since all beamers can be 2jz-ed.

I personally can't wait for it to be released in SA. Will be trading in the 86 for that. Hopefully in silver. I love it

Hope you have a pre order deposit of at least 200k on one at a dealer already
