Hello Fellow Carbies

I'm looking for recommendations on where to take a 2010 A180 automatic vehicle in for repairs/inspections.
I'm hoping to find a reputable place near Brackenfell (Northern suburbs, Cape Town) area to get this sorted.

I've received a vehicle diagnostic report from the service place I normally go to; they don't do these type of repairs.

Trouble codes:
  1. 0793 The rpm signal from component 'Y3/9b4 (CVT secondary RPM sensor) is unavailable
  2. 0722 The rpm signal from the component (CVT output RPM sensor) 'Y3/9b5 is unavailable
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Let us know how the repair goes, auto gearbox repairs can be extremely painful.
It looks like it's a CVT gearbox, what mileage does the vehicle have and how often has the gearbox oil been changed?

Mileage is just over 140 000km. I get it serviced whenever the service light/indicator comes on. I just had the service place double check all fluids, including the gearbox oil.... or so I hope it was checked.

I'm going to reach out to a few places for quotes to resolve my error codes and get an idea of cost/time to fix this.
Thanks for the advice guys.

Manufacturers often claim gearbox oil is lifetime but on CVT's that is not the case and you should change it every 50,000km to be on the safe side. I'd check previous invoices and see if it has regularly been replaced if not do it asap, it may even help with your current issues.

Wanted to chime in here and say thanks for the recommendation. Saw this and took my type R into them today. Consummate professionals - had my minor issue diagnosed and sorted in an hour.

Awesome to hear, always nice when a gearbox issue is easy to repair!
What was the problem, I'm assuming it's a Honda Civic Type R?

Yes, it's an fn2 civic type R. Previous owners mechs had used diff oil instead of gearbox oil... Thankfully no damage that we can see/hear without stripping.

Manual gearbox?
If so it should be just fine, just drain and fill with the correct genuine Honda oil or Ravenol oils are also great and can be ordered online.

Hey man,

I don't know if you've come right with this but I work for a company that repairs these TCMs. If you can get the unit removed and shipped up to JHB, we can repair it for you and send it back to the garage. DM me for details if you're interested.

Hi there. That is an awesome offer!
Sadly, I'd prefer to get the vehicle and faulty part sorted closer to where I am located, in the northern suburbs of Cape Town.

Update on my TCU issue.

I have reached out to a few places and shared the MaxiDAS vehicle diagnatic report that I have.

Received quotes from 2 places. Prices differ, but the same time estimate is around 2 weeks to get resolved.... meaning I'd have no vehicle for 2 weeks! I have to plan for this before I can book in the vehicle.
Just for my own sanity, I want to get a quote from a Mercedes dealership to compare costings and warranty of repairs.

Interestingly. 1 place I called says they have NO parts to resolve my issue..... and 2 other places have referred me to more specialist places to tackle this.

I can speak to a garage we use in Cape Town for you and get them to remove the unit? The only reason I say this is because I'm fairly certain we'd be much cheaper than other alternative options... Whatever you decide, good luck!

What are the quotes thus far and what do they say needs to be done?

Quotes so far:
  • service center 1: R20k ex vat, needs the vehicle for 2 weeks
  • service center 2: R10k ex vat, needs the vehicle for 2 weeks
  • service center 3: R18k ex vat, needs the vehicle for 1 week
Work to be done is mostly around TCU that is faulty, needing repairs and oil change.
Another service center tells me that its potentially some conductive gel that is corroding that needs to be repaired.

I'm waiting to hear back from a Mercedes dealership before deciding where to go.
Either way, I can't book in the vehicle till the end of June, when I can be without a vehicle for 2 weeks.

Whats the break down parts to labour and why is one guy so much cheaper?

My experience with these are cracked clutch drum. You say the TCU is faulty?

I'm going based on what the service centers are telling me, based on the diagnostic report I have shared with them.

This is an automatic A180 though; is the clutch drum still a factor to worry about?

I'm assuming they will only know what is actually causing the issue once they open the gearbox, the diagnostics codes can only tell you so much and they can often be the symptoms but not the cause?
Auto's also need clutch systems.

Op, how did the repair work out?
I'm collecting the vehicle today; booked it in for the repair 2 weeks ago.
You were correct @Skylark , final costing was only available after a full diagnostic/inspection was done at the repair center. Ultimately worked out a bit cheaper than the original rough quote. Total cost was just over R21k including VAT.

What did they discover was the actual issue when they opened it up?

Based on the invoice; it looks like the CVT Mercedes plate needed to repaired and CVT oil replaced.
I recall a few days were needed to send a part away for repair and to come back to be fitted/tested.

Vehicle is driving without issues when I drove it back this morning, so all seems good. I get 6months warranty on this repair.

Good stuff, who did you end up taking it to?
