Mecer K3G3R 31.5" QHD (2560x1440) 144Hz Freesync Curved Gaming Monitor - REVIEW-

Been thinking quite a bit lately about 32 vs 27". Playing COD on my T260 (25'5) a 32" will just be way to big for me personally.

Was looking at this AOC CQ27G1 27" 144Hz Curved Gaming Monitor - Best Deal - South Africa

But after watching the review Linus gave Im not really sold on it

So Im back to the Mecer 27" Mecer M2A1R 27" QHD (2560x1440) 144Hz 4ms 16:9 TN Freesync Gaming Desktop Monitor - Wootware

I assume the Viotek GFT27DB is the exact same monitor just rebranded?
Hardware Unboxed gave a pretty great review on it

Anybody here happy with the 27"?
Seen a few on carb for about R4.5k

Actually your T260 is bigger than 27" monitors. This is thanks to the aspect ratio difference. A 32" would not be way too big.

Hey guys,

I picked up this monitor and I'm really enjoying it. Not that it's something I need to use often at all but I'm not getting any sound from the built-in speakers.

Does the monitor even have built-in audio? I see there are audio controls in the settings. Are they perhaps only for controlling the passthrough audio from HDMI to aux?

The Mecer K3G3R does not have a built in speaker. Only an aux port if i remember correct. (used to own one)

Anyone ever had a panel go bad? Mine developed horizontal lines overnight on both HDMI and DP from two sources. Have logged a return with Takealot. Sucks to have this happen so close to exams.

Takealot advised no stock = refund... guess I'm in the market now :-( This monitor was so awesome.

Mine is doing the same horizontal lines.

The new panel appears to have identical specs to the Dell S3220DGF 32" and comes in quite a bit cheaper. Local stock was expected beginning of October but must be stuck at customs.

Really keen to see reviews on it, I would not be suprised if it used the same panel as Dell with Mecers barebone osd from their supplier. The K3G3R is still a brilliant panel for the money, the + should fill those shoes well.

I had mine for over a year and the new owner is loving it as well.

Two versions coming in, a 1080P cheapie and a K3G3R+ which the the upgrade of the classic. Note pricing might not be final. stock should be available on the 19th.

Can vouch for RockinIT and amazing customer support when I used them last December. Thanks guys

The brightness levels on the Dell are much higher at both SDR and HDR outputs (250nitts vs 350nitts)SDR, I don't see a rating for HDR luminance on the Mecer but I've measured the dell at 510nitts in HDR mode far exceeding its 450nitt HDR rating.

I would be very surprised if the Mecer came close to those levels, especially at that pricing.

I've actually got the older k3g3r next to the Dell s3220dgf right now and those two are worlds apart in image quality

Strange these guys got much lower Hdr and sdr peak numbers. Far more in line with the 250 and 450. Given the new panel has an Hdr rating and 400 is the lowest I'm still thinking these are using the same panel. After all there aren't a ton of actually panel makers out there. I'm sure the mecer like the previous model will be an excellent value for the local market. Dell S3220DGF Review

I think its very much calibration dependant , at low contrast levels you will get those numbers also that review was done on an older panel ,A01 i believe (There are 3 panel revisions) .

I've gotten closer to this with the A03 panel Dell S3220DGF Gaming Monitor Review: High-Performance Work and Play ( FYI This review was done using the A02 panel)

Takealot just picked up my display. Desk is sitting lekker empty now. If I get Takealot site credit I might be locked into getting something from them.

They have to give you cash if you ask for it, based on my (admittedly limited) understanding of the CPA.

That said, you could always get the Dell from them.

I'll definitely try to get cash then, thanks for the heads up 🤞

Only semi-correct. If it's older than six months there's no obligation to refund.

Firstly want to thank you all for commenting here, learnt alot about monitors in general and based on the review and comments here i got me a k3g3r for myself from a fellow carbie, im pretty happy with it! I eventually got the adaptive sync enabled and managed to get gsync working (i think) nvidia control panel has this msg on "selected display is not validated for gsync compatible" ? im assuming its showing me this because its not like a gsync certified display? also i found the monitor very bright, i am currently using "text" mode. Any other settings you guys think i should enable on this monitor to make the experience better? thanks again chaps! cheers.

Welcome to the club!

That is right. Nothing to worry about.

See @Zageroth's post on ideal settings posted below. I used this and I agree, I think it looks the best. Make sure to reset the monitor's OSD settings to default before starting.
Hi guys, I have now owned this monitor for 3 weeks or so and below are my findings:

* the colors are pretty good out of the factory but an adjustment going from an IPS monitor, I've played with these settings for weeks only to revert back to factory presets
* refresh rate works great as expected
* there are clear issues with ghosting on this VA panel which is expected, especially with smearing blacks in dark scenes and texture flickering on black to white contrast (i.e. Far Cry 5 at night, PUBG on Sanhok inside buildings, Skyrim at night) - this is even on the highest settings for response rate (fastest mode). I also found that the black smearing/ghosting is worse at 144 hz and better at 120 hz and below
* Freesync works as most other Gsync Compatible monitors - pretty good for the most part apart from the brightness flickering in menus etc. This basically happens on VA panels because at lower refresh rate the screen runs a bit darker/dimmer i.e. 60 hz and brighter above 90 hz, when the game fluctuates a lot like in menus (i.e. PUBG, Apex Legends) as the fps keep dropping to 30 fps and then up above 100 fps etc. - this is where the flickering is most evident. *I FOUND A SOLUTION THAT WORKS FOR THIS MONITOR* - so what I did to resolve this is the following to help those in need and this will most likely work for other Freesync monitors too: Download an application called CRU (free to download), open it, click on EDIT at the top, change your Freesync range from 48 - 146 to 90 - 146. Save and restart the PC, switch off monitor and on again and re-enable Gsync in the driver. Then in the Nvidia Control Panel make sure that you enable Vsync globally (this is the correct way to implement Freesync anyway, Vsync only engages out of the Freesync range so you'll still get no input lag between 90 and 141 fps). Then cap your fps in all games with Rivatuner (comes with MSI Afterburner) to 141 and keep your refresh rate on 144 hz. Most of the flickering will disappear as there are no crazy hz jumps anymore. Also, the great thing here is that if a game is running at 70 fps it will double up the hz and will run with Freesync at 140 hz if the game is at 65 fps, it will run at 130 hz and this will work dynamically. The dead zone will be between 73 and 89 fps where it will use Vsync instead (hardly noticeable but a good compromise to get Freesync working without flickering). My suggestion is frame lock more demanding games at like 65 fps for a smooth experience and the FPS games that are fast paced must run above 90 fps at all times - then issue resolved. I really hope this helps someone
* Here are all my settings that I use with this monitor after fiddling for days on end: Input DP, Brightness - 90, Contrast - 50, DCR - Off, Gamma - 2.4 (more accurate to sRGB, don't use 2.2 as this is an incorrect default setting, Color Temperature - Warm (tried calls and user and it just never looks right), the rest of the settings should be default here, don't fiddle with Saturation and Hue, leave at 50, Bypass - Off, Sharpness - 50, Response Time - High, Noise Reduction - Off, Super Resolution - Off, DLC - Off, FreeSync - On, The rest of the settings should be left on default

In summary, should you buy this monitor - well the answer is - it depends, this monitor is pretty much on par with more expensive VA panels and is almost half the price, so if you don't mind slow response times, black to white/gray to gray transitions and minor smearing/ghosting in dark scenes then this monitor is amazing for the price - large screen and curved, high refresh rate, 1440P, Freesync (after configuration), great contrast, good colors (albeit sometimes overly bright and washed out at times compared to IPS). You won't get bigger and better for this price unless you go TN panel which has it's own problems and poor viewing angles etc. If the smearing bothers you - don't buy a VA panel, rather save up and get an IPS instead.

I registered specifically to help people on this forum who own this monitor or are considering buying it. I thought I could be of help.
