Mecer K3G3R 31.5" QHD (2560x1440) 144Hz Freesync Curved Gaming Monitor - REVIEW-

Thanks for the feedback @SynicalFox
Just found this video which explains why some panels might experience flickering or weird artifacts when using an Nvidia card on a Freesync monitor:

Seems you have to use the Custom Resolution utility to ensure you're ranges are correct.
Yeah. I think that's pretty much all you have to do. It still works well enough but it is about 20 fps worse in some things than considered to Radeon with FreeSync.

Perhaps Nvidia's Pendulum demo? Download Cool NVIDIA Demos | NVIDIA Cool Stuff

Out of interest, do we know what the Freesync range is on this monitor (most interested in the lower range)?

According to Mecer, 60 (I asked via the retailer), according to CRU,48:

52659

Subtle. Except for highest. Everything should be followed by a creepy overshoot shadow.

Do you have Rocket League? Its really noticeable spinning the car in the menu at both the ball and the goal.

I do not, but whenever I encounter a situation where the ghosting is noticeable, I fiddle with the settings to see if I can notice any change, which I cannot, at all.

Thanks for this - I will experiment with my ranges to see if I can fix the flickering issues I've had.

i will run the pendulum demo tonight ( if possible record it as well ) and give feedback.

I'm wondering if VA panels are just not to my liking. If my monitor would be worth 6K to someone, I'd consider selling it (and if there's a real issue, it's only about a month old, and under warranty).

It's sad to see that you're moaning about VA panels and the ghosting experienced all over different forums, and tbh is starting to sound a bit whiney.

If you want to sell yours, put it up on the monitor section using the correct template.

For the most part VA panels will give a ghosting effect under certain circumstances. Adjusting a few things can improve this, however you will still be faced with some of it from time to time. I've tried numerous games over the last 2 weeks of having it and haven't sat back and said - oh crap that looks terrible, let me go post all over the internet what shit I bought ...

  • Ring of Elysium
  • Battlefield V
  • APEX Legends
  • World of Warcraft
  • The Division 2 Beta

And I'm quite sticky about my gaming experience over all, and no issues in the games above.

For twice the price you can go buy the ASUS Variant and would most likely STILL have the same issues. ROG Strix XG32VQ | Monitors | ASUS South Africa - R10k is the cheapest I could find online.

You might be better off getting a Dell with an TN Panel or something IPS that might suit.

Goodluck there @copacetic

Well, to be precise, 2 forums (and the only reason I'm posting about it here is someone pointed me to this thread from the other), and I've been linking the various threads together for visibility to a problem I'd like to solve on my end. You are welcome to call it whiny, which I think is a mischaracterization, as I am simply getting frustrated at my inability to figure out the issue (or indeed if there is an issue in the first place), and the lack of responsiveness from the retailer (who I'm not naming specifically, as my intent is not at all to bitch or malign anyone).

Goes without saying.

Given you've clearly decided on my motives and attitude, I'm left with little to say at this stage.

In any event - To be perfectly clear to anyone who is looking to purchase this monitor, please don't let my experiences negatively influence your decision. As CRE4MPIE has said, VAs are the way they are, and it's entirely possible I am simply not used to them. My various efforts at interrogating the problem have led to me expressing my frustration, and I recognise and apologise for the fact that this is not helpful to people trying to make a decision.

What I am doing on my end, to finalise the whole thing will be to plug it into a friend's computer this week, just to eliminate any of the issues being something iffy on my end and based on that, I will make a decision on how to proceed.

I really had hoped to help - not hinder - people looking at buying this monitor, and if there's anything I can do to ameliorate the concerns I may have caused, please feel free to request it.

@CRE4MPIE Sorry if I was a bit snippy earlier; I am happy to chat about the monitor, I was just taken aback at your perception of my attitude, but I've given it some thought and I realise I was probably not helping by being anything that entirely objective about the whole situation.

Dude it's the internet - no harm, no foul here :)

I too have had my frustrations with hardware and sympathize. Out of interest and i might have missed this before - what's your PC spec ?

Pretty standard - A 1070 I snagged here, 4790K, Samsung SSD, etc, Windows 10. Nothing that I could imagine would be causing any issues, but the only way to tell for sure is to try another PC, which I shall do.

Did you disable the flicker option on the monitors osd?
Did you set the dp cable too 1.2 I think it was in the osd?

I'm not sure which flicker option you are referring to? That said, I've tried every combo of settings I could think of, generally.

Yup, definitely.

I found an option for normal flicker and something else.

Can't remember exactly what it does but did see it and set it too none incase it made the screen give some wired flicker feel.

No idea

Tested a few things with GSYNC last night , the pendulum demo went smooth - very smooth.
Enabling GSYNC for non-full screen apps not recommended , i noticed in spotify when you move the sound bar the gui flickers like a rave from the 90s. There is a few apps that did this.
The general gaming for gsync fully enabled was a hit or miss. Starcraft 2 had flickering now and then but Destiny2 and Modern Warfare was pretty fine.
I am keeping gsync disabled for now as i am sure with current games and my 1080ti i dont have to enable it , BUT if you are buying this solely or largely for the gsync compatibility i would prob ( just personal opinion ) look for something gsync certified & tested than this monitor.
I dont have any issues with the screen quality in general , but that said i am not a designer but a coder.

It's old now - I played it for many many many years ! It would be quite hard for a new player to get into it now. It came out in what 2003 ?
I recorded a little some time ago while exploring the new time locked server, should give you some indication. Low level dungeon grinding.

Holy shit another South African Everquest player! Man I spent basically every spare moment from 2000 to about 2005 playing Everquest and Everquest 2. Thousands and thousands of hours.

I was even in one of the top raiding guilds in Everquest 2 for a while.

I still jump back into EQ1 on occasion but haven't done 2 in years.

I think you may be referring to the settings for the LEDs on the back of the monitor. I initially thought what you did, until I noticed it strobing in the dark.

This is exactly my experience. As far as I can tell, when set to full-screen it only flickers when it's a non-engine scene (as in a video / menu). When set to windowed it seems more prone to having problems in-game.

Whether you have an Nvidia card or AMD scum;

Would recommend a bit less biased comments.

only issue I have is that the screen is very dark, I have increased the contrast to 80 and the brightness is already on 90 ( setting it to 100 doesn't do much) any one have this issue ? not sure what other settings to change.

Some things I've read which could cause this and possible resolutions:
  1. Freesync itself, try disabling the Freesync and re-enabling it
  2. Overclocking the refresh rate - limit it to 120Hz
  3. Enabling/Disabling ULMB (this should disable Freesync by default)
  4. Do a factory reset of the monitor in the OSD
  5. Windows 10 HDR mode on/off (look for the additional brightness setting for desktop, if enabled)
Let us know if any of these fixed the issue or perhaps helped diagnose the problem.

Yep, noticed that too - the contrast on the VA panels are OTT. I adjust my gamma, brightness and contrast in my Nvidia settings and leave the OSD settings default.

Hi all,

Apologies for not having done the introduction section yet, but I wanted join this conversation as well.

I also bought this monitor from Rebel tech about 3 weeks ago. I have not done any calibration as of yet as I am not sure how.
I have only done the basics like enable Freesync and change response time to fastest. As have not yet had a lot of time to play around and test but here is a brief summary of my experience:
  • When I started up my G-Sync Enabled was tick by default. I only had to change my refresh rate to 144hz in the drop down.
  • I have only done the testufo check to see whether it picks up the 144hz and that was successful.
  • The problem now comes in where I am not sure that the 144hz is actually working in game. Things feel smooth but not WOW!. I cannot see any tearing at all. So for me Freesync is defenitely working but I am not sure about the 144hz. I am wondering is there is some other trick (as mentioned above by someone else).
  • I have only run Apex Legends and Insurgency Sandstorm and BF1. All of them at fullscreen with now issues (no flickering)
  • I am trying to purchase Battlefield V via Origin Access but for some reason my payment details keeps on rejecting (will continue this discussion on a different thread)
  • It would be great if someone can guide me with some calibration tips for this monitor.
  • If anyone wants me to test or try out some feature, feel free to ask.
So far I have not had ANY bad experience with this monitor, even though I might not even be using it at its full potential.

My hardware: i5 6600K @4.5ghz; 16Gb @2666Mhz; Asus ROG Strix GTX1080; 960EVO NvMe SSD; Samsung 43" KU7000 UHD TV (previous display)
