Hey there

I've been doing some research on lava lamps. I remember having one as a kid and being mesmerized by the bubbles continuously going up and down.

It would seem like Lava lamps aren't that popular locally anymore. It's nearly impossible to find a good looking one from any local retailers. The only 2nd hand ones I could find were on bid or buy, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for. The last place I'm thinking of looking is at a china mall somewhere, but I don't recall seeing one there the last time I visited.

And so, I broadened the horizon of my search to a global scale. I discovered Mathmos, which invented the lava lamp. They are still manufacturing the lamps, and they look beautiful. There's one small problem though... They cost around 80 pounds, and that's without any accessories (extra globes etc). This would roughly be R1700 (at the time of typing). Mathmos also doesn't ship to SA, so that process will have to be handled by a 3rd party. I also had a look at amazon, but every single one I tried to buy can't be shipped to SA, and this is on the US and UK store.

So I was wondering, what would it cost to have this shipped from the UK to SA? The package dimensions are about 15.5x15.5x48cm, with a volumetric weight of 2.5kg. If I decide to buy one, how would I go about arranging delivery to my home address? Which couriers are recommended?

Does anyone know of local suppliers that make something similar?

Any input is welcome.

Thanks!

I think i saw some at Builders Warehouse, but this was a few years ago. Definitly you should be able to find them at a china mall shop

@ScottulusMaximus did some overseas shipping if I'm not mistaken

Haha you can say that again...

But won't be able to ship this, is liquid in glass, can't go on planes. Which is why none of the amazon ones will ship here. Can come in via postal service (not recommended if you actually want to receive it) or you can bring in a couple hundred via sea freight :)

I see, I thought it had something to do with the type of product haha.

Do you think it would be possible to fly to the UK, buy it there, then put it in luggage on a plane? xD

So I actually managed to find one on OneDayOnly on Saturday. It's doesn't have a nice shape like the mathmos one, but it's still 40cm tall and costs a fraction of the price. Guess it will always be difficult to find the "real deal" in SA.

Hopefully this thread will mean something to the next person looking for a lamp :D
