I'm not sure if there is a thread for this, or if this is even in the right spot, but here it lies - the MTG Thread! General discussions about Magic. All nerds unite. Hopefully there are some of you out there. What formats do you guys play? What decks? Want to trade? Hate counters? (Yeah me too) talk here!

P.S Commander 2017 though. Good lord my body is ready.

Don't play Standard because student and money is thing. Have loads of cards. FUCKING LOVE THE GAME. Don't have any friends still here to play casual with anymore :(. Girlfriend moved to China so can't play with her either. But love the game.

Standard, along with any format that isn't commander is dead to me 😁. I used to only play standard (very casual playgroup) but we transitioned over to EDH and never looked back. The nice thing is that you only ever need 1 of each expensive card [emoji14] unless you build multiple decks. Hope you get back into it soon man!

I'm 10 months clean from cardboard crack. Sadly moved far from any LGS. Minister of finances disagrees :moody:

But I was an aggro/combo guy.

Most fun deck was beginning of Khans of tarkir.
Had some annoying goblins and boltwing marauders. maybe 4 dragons mainboard just to push it over the edge.
The real fun began in round 2 when I decided whether to go control or full aggro. Could add some counters and use goblins as meat shields then combo off with the boltwing by dumping more goblins.
One guy played me 3 weeks in a row. By the third he played one game and conceded. Not because the deck was good. Just really annoying :p

It didn't used to be so bad. until exchange rate and fetchlands came in. At one stage a good standard deck was $500-1000 with some broken Jace's.

Don't know if I'd get into it again. Still got all my cards but seriously got nobody to play. Friends have moved off and whatnot.

Had a mate that built a pretty beast aggro/cont deck. I completely understand the annoyance XD

I feel like you deserve one of those rehab medals for being clean, then I'd take it away from you cause you played control/counters [emoji14] . To be fair back when. I played Standard, I had a really dicky deck that had like 3 Dictate of Erebos, 4 merciless executioners, 4 Ruthless Deathfang. Basically the deck just punished you for trying to play creatures by forcing you to sacrifice them. I trashed the deck because it was unfun for my opponents and I felt terrible for it

It's like crypto. Keep it for your kids. Might have the next black lotus

Just keep a couple different decks around like I do. at some stage the occasion will come up or if you in a new city it's a great way to get involved without needing to drink and be social :p
Maybe one day it might get more popular in SA

You should make a list of worthwhile stuff you have. I might buy some from you and my playgroup might too, provided you have things we want and that you're willing to part with them 😊

I played my last year or so pretty much full aggro haha. Ultimately I got tired of headaches and wanted the game to be quick so would have breaks in between.
Nobody played that deck at our LGS. Sounds interesting

Been playing on and off for years, recently sold my entire collection bar a current standard deck. I qualified for Nationals, but not going to go anymore.

If you want to a buy a decent standard deck, let me know. I do intend on selling it. It's the Green/Red Pummeler deck - all sleeved up. I also have a unique playmat that I got in from the USA when my mom was over there :)

Does it count if one occasionally messes around with the digital version on Steam?

I used to play many many years ago.

I had a green/blue/white deck that revolved around engulfing slagwurm. My favourite deck to pit against monster decks. Survive until I can get the wurm out with enchantments to make it hexproof, force all opponent's creatures to block it and make it able to block any number of creatures xD.... all the life are belong to me hehe
Though as much as I loved it and my illusions deck and my infect deck(Was my strongest deck). The community started making me miserable.

Whenever there was a casual comp or something with a couple boosters or so up for grabs. There would always be those couple of guys that come compete with their pro tournament level control decks and it ended up with the winner being among those 2 or 3 people. That is what killed it for me. I don't mind losing, But it would be nice to lose to a random person/deck instead of the same arrogant pricks every single comp. And they didn't even end the match quickly, They would toy with you. Let you get a creature or spell out just to bounce, exile or counter it as you try do anything. They do that over and over for the entire match.

So I sold all my cards. I think I still have a EDH deck somewhere but meh, Couldn't be bothered with the community anymore.

I must have stopped playing back in 2000 or so and then pretty much gave everything away or sold my cards for next to nothing.

I had an all green deck that was heavily focused on early elf swarms with +1 from Kaysa and llanowar elves with fountain of youth to bump my life in the early rounds.
Once I had sufficient mana I would generally spawn force of natures and various other creatures with trample damage like Stampeding Wildebeest.
Very few people could handle 4 Force of natures on the table at once but as long as I could maintain the upkeep it generally stomped people if they managed to survive the elven swarm.

i have thousands of cards and no body to play with haha.

I use to buy a full set of 4x common and 4x uncommon of each set that came out for a while then buy the rares and myths that i wanted for my decks, played in tourneys most firday nights for a while but got over trying to keep my decks up to date to play.

So now i have boxes of cards sitting around and about 10 decks i have built to play with if mates that want to play come over. Have a good few pre built decks as well still from 15 years odd back.

Fav deck i made is a green/white life deck with 4 chalices of life/death in it (tap, gain 1 life, if you have more than 10 life than you started the game with flip card. Other side ... tap, deal 5 damage). Then the whole deck was filled with creatures that gave me life when they came out and a few big creatures that power/toughness was equal to my life. Have mana that gives life when it comes out and artifacts that exile creatures and return that strait back to the battlefield at the end of my turn and stuff like that. Easily could reach 30 life and have a chalice of death out on turn 3 and then the game was over

I was a fairly active player in the mid 2000s and totally stopped in 2010. Last night I went to a draft and loved it. Having sold my collection long ago I can only play limited now. But that is good, I've spent too much money on Hearthstone...

I'm not sure how old your collection is, but you can look at playing Modern? Its not as breakneck as Standard and a lot of your current collection might still be usable.

You're in the East Rand dude. There are a few places that host FNM.

The Magic The Gathering Arena game is out now for everyone and free to play.

The tutorial gives you a lot of the info you need to start playing even if you have never played before so its good for beginners as well.

You get given a few single color pre built decks to start out with, they are pretty good and have great potential to build onto later. Then as long as you complete your daily quests (Like play 20 lands or play 40 red spells) you can unlock a new dual colored deck each day up to when they have given you 10 pre built decks. Just for fun i entered a comp with one of the pre built dual decks and won so they really not bad.

You earn booster packs every x amount of wins or as daily/weekly quests, you also earn gold for every win and for your quests which can be used to buy booster packs and enter some competitions.

You can get wildcards from booster packs which you can use to trade for any card you want which is pretty cool.

You can play the casual games, competitive ranked games and games against your friends for free. If you would like to play in a competition or any of the special events (likes drafts or sealed) you need to pay entry with gems which you need to buy with real money or earn in some comps that you can enter using gold that you got from your quests. Prizes for the paid events are boosters and gems, even if you come last so its not to bad. Best part of the events is that they dont need to be played at one time, you can play a game here and there when ever you feel like and you will just be matched up with someone else that is at the same place in their comp at that time.

There are so many people playing that games take a few seconds to find so its good fun. Def suggest trying it out.

So I gave this a shot over the past day or two, they do give you a bit to get started, but if they follow the same block rotations as in normal magic there is no way to stay remotely viable as a free to play player.

I dunno hey, i make so much gold from just finishing daily missions and random games that when then new block comes out i will be able to 50 boosters which should be more than enough
