Hey, my apologies if i get the wording wrong, but I'm from Durban and eager to learn to fix computers, learn about hardware etc, is there anything available where i can learn on the job? I'm from the upper highway area

Honestly the best way to learn is from experience. You can try and watch some youtube videos from Linus Tech Tips, JaysTwoCents and many other tech tubers. Great way to learn. Then maybe try their budget projects yourself🤷‍♂️

Yes but if i can get a income while learning would be even better in order to afford upgrades, wouldn't need to be laughed at for asking for help then

You will need to learn how to do something.

You can't be studying Medicine and wanting to be a doctor at the same time when you haven't learned how to be a doctor...if this were possible then its ultimately defeats the purpose of studying.

So I'd suggest learning then trying to apply for a job at Matrix or Everech...

I feel your pain man

Yes, my first pc i had to sell as parts, still wish i kept the gpu, so the new one i got gifted is refurbished, so onboard gpu and I've been unemployed for about three years now, so figured I'll ask while learning simultaneously i could possibly start a side gig after learning a bit, I'm a total noob regarding a pc

Hey man,

Perhaps start by using whatever little cash you have and look out for some cheap pc components, test them to see if they work then sell them again. You would quickly have expanded your pc building knowledge and skills and at the same time making some bucks.

All the best bud

Any recommendations of what low priced items to start with?

It depends on what your finances will allow

Small ssd's (ssd's are good sellers) so like 120gb/256gb ssd's. Of course you'll have to scout and see what they sell for and get it for cheaper with enough room to sell it again at just about less than what everyone else is selling at.

DDR3&4 RAM are also good sellers and from there you can move to cpu's, gpu's etc

Tip - don't attach yourself with certain things that you will really want to keep for yourself. You can always get again in future. So sell and get out your profit, buy again and duplicate this process until you're in an okay position. Once you're okay then you can evaluate how well this is or is not working for you and you can perhaps find another avenue to venture in future.

You can also offer entry level pc repairs and upgrades (provided that you and others are confident in your skill level)

Problem is SSD's new are quite pricey, I only earn R250pm currently, so looking to get an income to hopefully replace or repair my GPU

I'd visit a Matrix or other store in your area and agree to work for them for a period of time, perhaps for a low amount, in order to upskill. This way, you have a foot in the door and can use that relationship to open up opportunities for yourself.

If you do well and demonstrate your willingness to get stuck in and work hard, it might pay off

You can often get cheap PC's from businesses who threw them out or donated them to the SPCA that are lekker to tinker with.
I have two old systems here (very, very old) that you can take off my hands. One has a blown PSU and the other I could not get to post, but it switched on. No Hard drives, but you can boot a Linux distro off a USB drive pretty easy to test the systems.

I'm in Woodlands currently, we also make our way to Westville and further up on a regular basis. Inbox me if you are interested...

Other than that I would try watching as many tutorials as I can from the top YouTubers, and keep an eye out at pawn shops, SPCA etc for second-hand PC's on the cheap! I bought a 4th gen intel based system in full working order a while back for R900.

In terms of getting work, you'd probably find it hard to get an internship position at this time, but if you are willing to work for cheap to learn, then maybe. Customs have been detaining stock so sales are low currently and everyone is taking the strain.

Next time I have a build, perhaps I could invite you over and you could assist, but at the moment it's so quiet. I'll be moving to Westville end of the month and will be operating from there.

Also, maybe try do something like a A+ Course, good certification to get your foot in the door, some places will hire you just with a course completion certificate and then you can get certified later when you can afford the exam.

Tried before but nobody is hiring at all

Props for asking. If they not hiring and you really desperate to learn. Why don't you offer to work for free at least once a week. Until you can get a foot in.

I know you could get exploited 🤣..but at least you can learn and gain experience for a CV.

Gifted OP the below Udemy course - hopefully it's what he needs to get going.

OP: Don't forget to report back when you get through it - keen to hear about your learning experience. Good Luck.

hey man, unfortuntely not yet, i've been dealing with family problems so haven't had time to do that yet but i'll get to it once i'm able to, sorry about that
