Bud why not just buy a new car with warranty and all the bells and whistles ?
You can get a new jimny for that much or a swift sport which is a lot of fun to drive

Quite a few Volvo V40's, new Mazda3's, Audi A3 sedan/hatch within these parameters!

New cars are not built like they were used to. Cars costing R400k have plastic instead of soft touch materials. I would rather have something older from a premium brand than a newer vehicle.

Sure enjoy the service charges,
there is a reason most people sell their German cars the second its out of warranty :)

Having driven only german cars for the last 10 years, yes quality is there in the interiors. The same cant be said for the engines, electronics, suspension etc. If you want the best of both worlds i.e quality and reliability i suggest you look at a lexus. A lexus GS is my next car.

Well that's the point of getting a car with balance of warranty. MB have 6 year plans
With you here, bought a 2016 C180 last year and I'm super happy - Merc just replaced the shocks and brake pads free of charge

I promise you'll be much happier in a used merc than a new swift ;)

Well to be Very honest most people sell the cars when warranty runs out because there are allot of parts that need replacing becase of Spirited or stupid driving all the time and not every single little thing is covered by warranty Anyway get a second hand car with low kms and check it out yourself buy a brand u believe in man these new cars literally fall apart would never dare paying 400 000 for a new polo with Windie winders in the back no thank you.

We bought our entry level Qashqai Visia 1.6 for R215k in 2013. I see the present Qashqai starts at over R400k. :(

We actually looked at the X-Trail 2.5 4x4 which was being sold as a 'demo' for R460k and normally sells for R520k. I must be getting old because I just couldn't stomach the idea of that much cash being swallowed by depreciation and interest.

If it wasn't for the lack of extra airbags the Suzuki Vitara Brezza / Toyota Urban Cruiser looked like a cheap option in a world where a Polo now starts at R280k.

Bump:

Also willing to look at Polo DSG's..
I have a 2013 Range Rover Evoque 2.2 SD4 if that's your thing, 87000km FSH Accident free?

Pvt sale

bump - anything german 2018 or newer.. will consider Polo's, T Cross etc.. Must be automatic and have some factory warranty left..

My aim is to give you more than a dealer so we both win.

German cars are a tad more expensive to replace out of warranty but if you look after it and do the necessary preventive maintenance you wont be disappointed.

Bump.

Please just go test drive a swift sport,
if you test it and don't like it i will personally EFT you 100 bucks for wasting your time
1.4t automatic
fits your budget.

The German obsession made sense 15 years ago.
Not today

Bump.

Note price not fixed so let me know what you have. Have some movement upwards.

Must be priced well i.e private sale so not looking for dealer prices.

Hey there,

Although 2015 model, I am looking to sell my A3 1.8T FSI Quattro Sportback for around just below the R290000 mark.
Mileage is currently on around 42000KM which is impressive for this year. Near spotless. I am on the hunt for something bigger. No need to respond if not interested. Just a thought!

Hey @bilbo,
Here is my 2c:
You are clearly looking for something relatively premium, yet not new. This is a good thing since we all know that a new car looses 20% at least as soon as its off the showroom floor.

1) If you travel a lot (including long distance) look at diesel. Fuel prices being what they are - this may be an option. Service is more expensive - lets say 20%. If anything goes wrong on the high pressure fueling side - very expensive usually.
2) Turbo vs non turbo - Once again fuel efficiency, but higher service/repair cost. I would stay away from BMW on the turbo side. When I had my 200k km Volvo turbo re-built recently I had this experience - Walk into Turbo repair master (Maitland), first question asked - BMW?
3) If you don't travel much (work from home etc.), perhaps look at naturally asperated.
4) I'm a bit of a Volvo fan boy. Go have a chat to Markus at Swedespeed (Montague gardens). Explain your requirements. They only do Volvo (much better than the agents). Volvos usually are very premium inside and out and loose value in the first few years - so you can get a pretty good car for not much money.
5) My ex boss had a Audi s4 3t manual. He took out a full mechanical warranty at the agents for 70k (basically bumper to bumper). The new clutch would have cost him that much by itself if he did not have it.

Ideally - Get any vehicle that will have a mechanical warranty and a service plan for the duration of your ownership. I think the Koreans (Kia and Hyundai) have a long warranty these days. If you don't want to do this - make sure you have a good third party specialist that cares about its customers (unlike most of the dealerships).

Good luck.
