I've been on Octotel fibre for almost a year, during which I've probably had 2-3 hours of downtime. This means that my Telkom Mobile sim hasn't been used and has deactivated.

Before I go out and spend another R1 of my hard earned money, I'd like to get an idea of what everyone else does.

What do you use? Ideally I'd avoid anything that has a monthly fee and would like the data to be cheap. Preferably LTE based solutions with coverage in Cape Town southern suburbs.

I'm confused - why the need for LTE if you already have Fibre that you're happy with?

Wouldn't it be safe just to use your Phone as a failsafe then if the fibre is so reliable?

Perhaps look at Rains offerings - they seem the most competitive and reliable. Even better if you have a Dual SIM phone you can use as a hotspot if/when fibre isn't available.

Yeah honestly I don't understand the issue beyond just doing the above for a whopping 2-3 hours of down time.

Even better...simply ignore the internet for a few hours and do something else.

Fixed it for you, cause im friendly like that:)

I've you're wanting to go a little OTT: Get a second fibre line from another provider and plug that into your router as a load-balancing or failover line. But to fall into your LTE requirements, using Rain prepaid would probably be the most cost effective.

How would you be able to do that? Wouldn't it all be on the same backbone anyways?

Depends on the providers. For example, I have a Cybersmart line and a Vumatel line, they originate from different datacentres and are on different providers. They're unlikely to both be down at the same time. You'd connect both fibre lines to a router that is load-balancing capable, so it'll just change between connections if the primary link is down. It works, but definitely overkill.
